The Ford Model A was Ford’s all-new answer to a changing car market: introduced publicly in December 1927 as a 1928 model, it replaced the Model T with conventional controls, a three-speed transmission, four-wheel braking, safety glass, stronger performance, and styling strongly influenced by Edsel Ford.

Ford used the Model A name twice, but the car most enthusiasts mean is the second Model A—the Model T successor that carried Ford into the late 1920s and early 1930s. The car’s importance lies in how decisively Ford changed both the automobile and the ownership experience.

What is a Ford Model A?

The Ford Model A was Ford Motor Company’s completely redesigned successor to the Model T. Ford introduced the second-generation Model A publicly in December 1927 as a 1928 model, after the 15-millionth Model T left Ford’s production line on May 26, 1927. Ford reused the Model A name to commemorate the company’s first car, the 1903 Model A. Ford’s company timeline documents the transition from the Model T to the Model A.

The date can sound confusing because the car appeared publicly in 1927 while Ford marketed it as a 1928 model. Calling it a “1927 Model A” without that explanation blurs the launch date and model year. In ordinary enthusiast usage, “Model A” usually means the 1928–1931 Ford rather than the much earlier 1903 car.

Why did Ford replace the Model T?

Ford replaced the Model T because low price and proven durability were no longer enough to keep the car competitive. By the middle of the 1920s, competing manufacturers were offering more modern styling, easier controls, stronger performance, and features better suited to improving roads and changing buyer expectations.

Henry Ford initially continued to regard the Model T as the best low-cost and rural automobile. Ford’s historical account says that updates and price reductions could no longer maintain the T’s position, so Henry Ford directed engineers to begin work on a new Ford in late 1926. The result was not a cosmetic facelift. Ford describes the Model A as a completely different car with no Model T parts carried over.

Henry Ford summarized the clean break by saying the company would “wipe the slate clean and start all over again with Model A,” according to Ford’s historical account of the car. Ford’s history of the 1928 Model A explains why the new car represented a strategic change rather than another Model T update.

How did Henry Ford and Edsel Ford influence the Model A?

Henry Ford and Edsel Ford both shaped the Model A, but their most visible contributions were different. Henry Ford remained central to the engineering priorities, production decisions, affordability target, and decision to move beyond the Model T. Edsel Ford’s influence was especially apparent in the new car’s color, trim, and contemporary styling.

Ford describes the Model A as “Edsel’s in color, style, and trim.” That phrase is useful when it is understood as a styling distinction, not as proof that Edsel alone designed the entire automobile. Ford’s Edsel Ford biography and its Model A history both support a strong Edsel styling influence without creating an artificial division in which Henry had no role in the car’s appearance.

The Model A was lower and sleeker than the Model T, and its bodylines helped Ford answer competitors whose cars looked more modern. Some visual cues also reflected the influence of Ford’s Lincoln design language. The car therefore changed the buyer’s experience as well as the underlying mechanical package.

What were the Ford Model A specifications?

A 1928 U.S. Ford Model A recorded in the Toyota Automobile Museum’s vehicle database used a water-cooled, inline, side-valve four-cylinder engine displacing 3,286 cc. The museum record lists 40 hp at 2,200 rpm, a three-speed sliding-gear transmission, four-wheel braking, a 2,628 mm wheelbase, a 3,851 mm overall length, a 1,673 mm width, a 1,825 mm height, and a 1,000 kg mass for the displayed example. The Toyota Automobile Museum specification record identifies these figures as details of its 1928 vehicle, not universal dimensions or weight for every Model A body style and market.

Wheelbase 2,628 mm Body style and market configuration can affect comparisons
Overall dimensions 3,851 mm long, 1,673 mm wide, 1,825 mm high Do not apply these dimensions to every body style without checking the specific car
Mass 1,000 kg Mass of the displayed example, not a universal Model A weight

Ford’s own historical article describes the Model A as more powerful and smoother than the Model T and gives an approximate capability range of 55 to 65 mph. That range is Ford’s published historical capability claim, not a modern independent road test or a guaranteed cruising speed for every surviving car. Ford’s Model A historical article is the appropriate source for that qualification.

What is the difference between a Model T and Model A?

The main difference between the Model T and Model A is that the Model A brought Ford’s low-cost car into a more conventional and modern form. The Model A retained a four-cylinder engine and Ford’s mass-production priorities, but it changed the controls, transmission, braking, safety equipment, performance, and appearance that buyers encountered.

Area Model T Model A Why the difference mattered
Controls Distinctive Model T control arrangement More conventional pedals and a separate gearshift Made the car more familiar to drivers accustomed to newer rivals
Transmission Model T-era operating system Three-speed sliding-gear transmission Provided a more conventional driving experience
Engine character Older four-cylinder Ford design More powerful and smoother four-cylinder design Improved usable performance while retaining a simple engine layout
Braking Earlier Model T braking formula Four-wheel braking Added a major safety and usability improvement
Windshield glass Did not have the Model A’s Ford-first safety-glass feature Triplex shatterproof safety windshield glass Added safety equipment in a low-priced car
Appearance Tall, familiar Model T proportions Lower, sleeker body with Edsel Ford styling influence Helped Ford compete for buyers who cared about modern appearance
Parts relationship Predecessor platform and components Completely different car with no Model T parts carried over, according to Ford Explains why Model A restoration requires Model A-specific research

Ford identified Triplex shatterproof safety windshield glass as a first for Ford. Together with four-wheel braking and conventional controls, the glass demonstrates that Ford was modernizing the driver’s relationship with the car—not simply making the Model T look different.

What year is the Ford Model A?

The second Ford Model A was introduced publicly in December 1927 as a 1928 model. The 1927 date describes the public introduction and the production transition after Model T production ended; the 1928 date describes the model year. Ford’s timeline and historical article should be read together when a source refers to the car as either a 1927 launch or a 1928 Ford. Ford’s official company timeline records the end of Model T production and the Model A transition.

For a particular surviving car, the launch year alone is not enough. Restoration research should establish the exact model year, body style, production details, running changes, and whether components are original, correctly restored, reproduced, or modified.

How successful was the Model A launch?

The Model A launch was an enormous public event, but the public response also created a manufacturing challenge. Ford reports that approximately 10 million people viewed the new Model A during its first week, with crowds large enough that some cities needed police to direct traffic.

The new assembly process took time to reach its intended output. Ford reports that the Model A line at the Rouge complex reached approximately 9,000 vehicles per day by the middle of 1929. Ford also says that more than five million Model As had been sold by 1931. The five-million figure is Ford’s rounded company-history figure, not a claim that every historical production-counting method produces the same precise total. Ford’s account of the Model A launch supplies the first-week audience and Rouge output figures, while Ford’s company timeline supplies the rounded sales milestone.

What were the Model A’s Ford firsts?

The Model A was the first Ford assembled at the new Rouge manufacturing complex and the first Ford to carry the famous blue oval logo, according to Ford’s company history. Ford’s regional heritage history also identifies the 1927 Model A as the first Ford vehicle to carry the oval as a radiator badge. Ford’s history and heritage page provides the regional account of the oval radiator badge.

Those firsts matter because the Model A represented more than a replacement product. The Model T had made automobile ownership broadly accessible; the Model A showed Ford responding when buyers began to expect accessible transportation with modern styling, safety equipment, familiar controls, and better performance.

What are the different Model A Ford body styles?

Ford offered the Model A in numerous passenger-car and commercial forms. Common body-style categories include the roadster, coupe, sedan, phaeton, station wagon, commercial vehicle, and truck-related forms. A body-style name is not enough to identify a car accurately because model year, running changes, originality, and modifications can alter what a surviving example represents.

Body-style category Typical reason enthusiasts distinguish it What to verify
Roadster Open two-seat-oriented passenger-car form Exact year, body details, top equipment, and authenticity
Coupe Enclosed passenger-car body with a distinct roof and interior arrangement Specific coupe variant, trim, hardware, and restoration correctness
Sedan Enclosed family-oriented passenger car Body configuration, year-specific parts, interior, and finishes
Phaeton Open four-door passenger-car form Correct body components, weather equipment, and year details
Station wagon Utility-focused passenger and cargo body Woodwork, body construction, provenance, and reproduction components
Commercial vehicle or truck-related form Work-oriented use rather than ordinary passenger transport Chassis, body source, commercial equipment, and modifications

The Henry Ford collection record for a 1929 Model A Roadster illustrates why the exact body style should be recorded rather than treating every Model A as interchangeable. A roadster, sedan, phaeton, wagon, and commercial vehicle can differ in construction, equipment, value, and restoration standards.

How do I identify a Model A Ford?

Identify a Model A Ford by confirming the car’s model identity, year, body style, mechanical details, and originality rather than relying on a single visual feature. The most useful identification process separates what the car was built as from what later owners changed.

  1. Confirm that the car is the second Model A. The relevant car is Ford’s 1928-model successor to the Model T, not the 1903 Ford that also used the Model A name.
  2. Establish the claimed model year. Treat a December 1927 introduction and 1928 model year as related but different facts.
  3. Record the body style. Note whether the car is a roadster, coupe, sedan, phaeton, station wagon, commercial vehicle, or truck-related form.
  4. Separate original parts from later work. Record whether the car is an untouched survivor, an accurately restored car, an older restoration, or a modified car.
  5. Check year-specific details. Hardware, finishes, accessories, and running changes can matter even when the car’s general shape looks correct.
  6. Use specialist standards before buying parts. General classic-car advice may miss the small Model A details that determine authenticity and judging correctness.

Ford directs researchers seeking deeper historical records to the Benson Ford Research Center and the Detroit Public Library’s National Automotive History Collection. Those resources are useful when a car’s history, factory details, or provenance needs more investigation than an online photograph can provide.

What is the best Model A restoration book?

For restoration-minded readers, the strongest reference identified in this research is the Model A Ford Restoration Guidelines & Judging Standards, Revision 5. The Model A Ford Club of America describes the jointly developed volume as a 590-page reference reviewed against Ford Archive research and intended to help restorers determine what is correct, what fits a particular car, and what should be rejected.

A Model A restoration guide is more useful than a generic vintage-car repair book when authenticity matters. Model A correctness can depend on small details such as hardware, finishes, accessories, year-specific changes, and body-style distinctions. The Model A Ford Club of America is the primary club resource identified for the restoration and judging standards, and the Model A Ford Restorers Club provides additional restoration and parts-oriented resources.

Are Model A Ford parts still available?

Model A Ford replacement parts, accessories, and restoration resources remain a meaningful part of the enthusiast ecosystem, but availability and correctness vary by item. MAFCA and the Model A Ford Restorers Club provide parts-oriented and technical resources; those organizations are better starting points for identifying the correct component than a generic search based only on the word “Ford.”

Before ordering a component, record the exact year, body style, original equipment requirement, and whether the car is being restored to judging standards or prepared for regular recreational use. A reproduction part can be mechanically useful while still being incorrect for a concours-oriented restoration. The same distinction applies to finishes, fasteners, accessories, and replacement body components.

What makes a Model A Ford valuable?

A Model A Ford’s value is shaped by condition, body style, originality, correctness, provenance, geography, and modifications. A universal current value estimate would be misleading because the available research does not provide a verified current appraisal dataset, average restoration cost, or current ownership-cost figure.

Factor Why it affects evaluation Questions to ask
Body style Different body types appeal to different collectors and have different construction and rarity considerations Is the car a roadster, coupe, sedan, phaeton, wagon, or commercial form?
Condition Mechanical, structural, body, paint, and interior condition change the work still required Does the car run, and how much restoration remains?
Originality Original components and an untouched history can matter to collectors Which parts are factory-original, reproduced, or replaced?
Correctness A restored car can be attractive yet contain the wrong year-specific details Do hardware, finishes, accessories, and running changes match the claimed car?
Provenance Documented history can make a car easier to authenticate and understand Are ownership, restoration, and body-style records available?
Modifications Hot rods and customs may be desirable in their own category but should not be judged as stock cars Is the car being evaluated as an original-style Model A or as a modified build?
Geography Buyer demand, transportation, and local availability can vary by market Which regional market is relevant to the transaction?

Do not treat a hot rod or custom as a failed original restoration. A modified Model A can be historically interesting and enjoyable to use, but its evaluation should be based on the modified-car category rather than stock Model A judging standards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the Model A still matter?

The Model A matters because it captures Ford’s response to the end of the Model T’s dominance. Ford preserved the goals of practical, mass-produced transportation while accepting that modern buyers expected more: conventional controls, stronger performance, four-wheel braking, safety glass, and styling that looked current.

The Model A was therefore both a continuation and a correction. It continued Ford’s affordability and production discipline, but it corrected the assumption that durability and low price alone would keep an aging design competitive. For Ford fans, the car is the clearest example of the company learning that the mass market also rewards usability, safety, and appearance.

The Bottom Line

The Ford Model A was introduced publicly in December 1927 as a 1928 model and replaced the Model T with a genuinely new car. Its conventional controls, three-speed transmission, four-wheel braking, safety glass, improved four-cylinder performance, and Edsel Ford-influenced styling explain its historical importance. For a surviving car, exact year, body style, originality, correctness, and modifications matter more than the Model A name alone.
