The Porsche 911 spans eight commonly identified generations, from the original 1963 car to the current 992. There is no single value for any generation: a U.S. Hagerty Price Guide example for a 2001 Carrera coupe in condition 3 is $25,667–$34,000, while examples from the same guide for 2026 992s range from $114,667 to $230,667 depending on model and body style. These are October 2026 guide figures for specific cars—not prices for every 911 or appraisals of an individual vehicle.
Porsche 911 generations and guide-value examples
The dates below follow Porsche’s broad historical timeline unless otherwise noted. Generation handoffs overlap: production dates, model years and regional references do not always begin or end together. The prices are U.S. Hagerty Price Guide examples for October 2026, all in condition 3 (“Good”). They refer only to the exact year, trim and body style named—not to an average for the generation.
| Generation | Broad date range | What defines the era | Specific October 2026 Hagerty example, condition 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original 911 | 1963–1973 | The original generation in Porsche’s historical overview. | 1964 911 coupe: $515,000–$733,333. This very early example should not be treated as a typical value for later early-911 cars. |
| G series | 1974–1989 | The broad period following the original generation. | 1974 base 911 coupe: $44,333–$61,333. Hagerty lists a separate 1974 S configuration with a different range, underscoring that trim matters. |
| 964 | 1988–1994 in Porsche’s broad timeline; Porsche Classic lists U.S. cars as 1989–1994 | The era introduced the first all-wheel-drive 911, the Carrera 4. | Not stated: the material available here does not establish a comparable current condition-3 example for a specific 964 configuration. |
| 993 | 1993–1998 | Porsche identifies it as the last air-cooled generation before the 996 transition. | 1995 Carrera Cabriolet: $53,667–$67,000; Hagerty reports a typical value around $61,000 for this exact configuration. |
| 996 | 1997–2005 | The 911 moved from air-cooled to water-cooled engines. | 2001 Carrera coupe: $25,667–$34,000. This Carrera example does not represent special models or every car’s condition. |
| 997 | 2004–2012 in Porsche press material; some U.S. model-year references start in 2005 | The successor to the 996; the start date varies with the dating convention. | 2005 Carrera Cabriolet: $32,533–$41,200. A separate 2005 Carrera coupe record lists $55,500 in condition 3, so the body styles should not be combined into one range. |
| 991 | 2011–2019 | The generation preceding the 992 in Porsche’s timeline. | 2012 Carrera Cabriolet: $43,667–$52,667. This is one early-generation Cabriolet reference, not a value for every 991. |
| 992 | 2018–present | The current generation in Porsche’s historical overview. | 2020 Carrera S Cabriolet: $121,000–$132,000; 2022 Targa 4S: $114,667–$121,000; 2026 Carrera GTS Cabriolet: $214,333–$230,667. These distinct configurations show the spread within one generation. |
Sources for the generation history and dates are Porsche’s 911 history, Porsche press material and Porsche Classic’s U.S. 964 overview. The valuation examples are from the corresponding Hagerty valuation records. The figures are guide ranges, not guaranteed transaction prices.
What the generation codes tell you—and what they do not
The air-cooled-to-water-cooled divide
The 993 is the final air-cooled generation in Porsche’s overview; the 996 marks the move to water-cooled engines. That distinction is useful for identifying major engineering eras, but it does not determine the value of a particular car. A model’s year, specification, condition and history still matter.

Overlapping dates are not a contradiction
Generation timelines use different conventions. Porsche’s broad history places the 964 at 1988–1994, while Porsche Classic describes U.S. 964s as 1989–1994. Porsche press material dates the 997 to 2004–2012, whereas some U.S. model-year references begin in 2005. Treat these as overlapping handoffs, not as one perfectly uniform set of model-year boundaries.
Why “what is my Porsche 911 worth?” needs more detail
A generation code is only a starting point. The examples above compare different years, trims and body styles; even the 2005 997 coupe and Cabriolet references differ. For a meaningful comparison, match as many of these factors as possible:

- Maintenance and accident history, along with the market geography.
Do not use an ordinary Carrera figure to value a Turbo, GT or collector edition. Find a reference for the closest matching configuration; if none is available, the evidence does not support assigning it the Carrera example’s value.

Hagerty says its Price Guide draws on auction results, asking prices and private-sale activity, and describes the guide as informational. A guide estimate is not the same thing as a current asking price, a completed sale, an insurance value or an appraisal of your car. Condition 3 is the stated condition category for every example in the table; differences in mileage, equipment and history may make a specific car unlike the reference.

For additional market context, Hagerty’s March 2026 valuation-trends analysis reported that its condition-3 average for 1990–94 964s rose 69% over five years, from $88,400 to $149,600. The same analysis reported condition-3 averages of $92,900 for 2005–12 997s and $43,700 for 1999–2004 996s. These are Hagerty trend aggregates, not the individual model-year guide examples in the table; they cover different groupings and should not be compared as if they were equivalent records.
For a buyer or owner, the useful question is not simply what a generation is worth, but what a specific year, variant and condition is worth in the relevant market. The figures here offer a dated U.S. reference for selected cars, not a complete price matrix across all 911s.
