Every Plausible Rumor About the Next-Gen Nissan GT-R: What Nissan Has Actually Confirmed

Nissan has confirmed work on a GT-R successor, but the R36’s final specification remains unknown. The strongest current theory is a new-chassis hybrid GT-R—not a pure EV directly based on Hyper Force.

The next Nissan GT-R is a real program, but its final specification is still largely unknown. Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa said in April 2026 that the company is already working on a GT-R successor, while Nissan North America executive Ponz Pandikuthira said enthusiasts could see concrete announcements by 2028 and that Nissan hopes to have an R36 before the end of the decade.

The most credible current scenario is no longer a purely electric GT-R based directly on the Hyper Force concept. Recent executive-source reporting points instead to a new-chassis hybrid that retains a combustion engine, potentially with the VR38DETT block forming part of the foundation. That does not confirm the engine, battery, motor layout, horsepower, price, styling, or launch date. It establishes a direction—not a finished specification.

Claim Status What the evidence supports
Nissan is working on a GT-R successor Confirmed by Nissan leadership Ivan Espinosa said the company is already working on the GT-R and intends to preserve the credibility associated with the name.
The car will be all-new Strongly reported from Nissan executive comments Ponz Pandikuthira said the successor needs a new chassis and will be an all-new car, not merely an R35 facelift.
A late-decade arrival is the target Broadly established, not scheduled Nissan has discussed concrete announcements by 2028 and hopes for an R36 before the decade ends.
The current plan is not a pure EV Reported executive direction Recent reporting says Nissan favors a hybrid approach for the next GT-R, although no production technical specification has been published.
Hyper Force is the next GT-R Not confirmed Hyper Force is an official electric performance concept. Nissan has not officially identified it as the production successor.
The R35 is finished Confirmed Nissan’s Japanese GT-R page states that R35 production has ended, covering the 2024 model year through September 2025.

The enthusiast label R36 is useful shorthand, but Nissan has not formally announced that name as the production model designation. It is best treated as a working name used by the media and GT-R community.

The most plausible R36 powertrain rumors

1. A hybrid twin-turbo V6 is the leading scenario

The strongest current rumor is that Nissan will combine a combustion engine with electric assistance rather than replace the engine entirely with a large battery-electric system.

The reported reasoning is practical as well as emotional. A high-performance EV can deliver enormous short-term output, but repeated track use places heavy demands on the battery. Sustained laps can deplete the energy reserve quickly, while fast charging between sessions introduces time, heat-management, and infrastructure problems. A hybrid could provide immediate electric torque and emissions benefits while allowing the combustion engine to supply sustained performance during longer track sessions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is a rationale for the architecture, not a confirmed R36 specification. Nissan has not announced the battery capacity, voltage, number of motors, motor locations, transmission, cooling system, or whether the engine will mechanically drive the wheels.

2. Plug-in hybrid and e-POWER are both being discussed—but neither is confirmed

Reports have mentioned a plug-in-hybrid possibility as well as Nissan’s e-POWER expertise. These are not interchangeable terms.

  • A plug-in hybrid normally combines a rechargeable battery and electric motors with an engine that can participate in driving the wheels, depending on the system design.
  • e-POWER is Nissan’s series-hybrid approach in which the engine primarily generates electricity and the electric motor drives the wheels.

There is no confirmed evidence that the R36 will use conventional plug-in-hybrid hardware, e-POWER, or a hybrid system derived directly from one of Nissan’s existing road cars. The final layout could be substantially different because a GT-R requires high thermal capacity, rapid response, high-speed durability, and predictable behavior on a circuit.

3. The VR38DETT block may survive, but the complete R35 powertrain will not simply carry over

One of the more credible technical reports suggests that Nissan may retain the basic 3.8-liter VR38DETT twin-turbo V6 block while adding new hybrid hardware. This would preserve a link with the R35 without requiring the entire old powertrain to remain unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The careful interpretation matters. The Drive has reported that the next GT-R’s powertrain will be mostly new. Therefore, even if the block remains part of the program, that does not confirm that the R35’s turbos, fuel system, engine internals, control software, transmission, cooling package, or calibration will carry over.

The most accurate description is that the VR38 architecture may continue in heavily revised form. It is not accurate to say Nissan has confirmed an unchanged VR38DETT.

4. A pure-electric GT-R is now the weaker current theory

The battery-electric theory was reasonable after Nissan unveiled Hyper Force in October 2023. The concept was explicitly presented as an all-electric, high-performance supercar with extreme output, advanced electric performance technology, all-wheel-drive control, and distinct R and GT driving modes.

However, the latest executive-source reporting changes the probability ranking. A pure EV is not the leading direction in the current plan, with Nissan instead favoring a hybrid that retains a combustion engine. That could change before production, but a fully electric R36 should now be described as a secondary possibility rather than the expected outcome.

What Hyper Force tells us—and what it does not

Hyper Force remains the most important official clue to Nissan’s future performance-car thinking. Its low, wide stance, pronounced wheel arches, dramatic aerodynamic surfaces, large rear wing, dual-display cockpit, and separate racing and grand-touring modes all show the design and technology language Nissan is willing to explore.

Independent coverage has interpreted the concept as a possible preview of the next GT-R. That interpretation is understandable, but it goes beyond Nissan’s official wording. Nissan presented Hyper Force as a vision for a next-generation all-electric high-performance supercar; it did not formally call the concept the R36 GT-R.

The safest prediction is that a production GT-R could borrow themes from Hyper Force rather than reproduce the concept literally. A road car must meet crash, pedestrian-protection, visibility, cooling, manufacturing, cost, and regulatory requirements that do not constrain a dramatic show car in the same way.

There are currently no official R36 exterior or interior images. Social-media renderings and images described as leaked production photos should not be treated as evidence unless Nissan or a demonstrably reliable source authenticates them.

Could the R36 use solid-state batteries?

Solid-state batteries are a plausible technology connection, but not a confirmed R36 feature.

Nissan has said that it aims to launch an EV using in-house all-solid-state batteries by fiscal 2028. The company has described potential advantages including approximately twice the energy density of conventional lithium-ion batteries and shorter charging times. Those ambitions help explain why commentators connect Hyper Force, future Nissan EVs, and a possible GT-R successor.

But a corporate battery-development target does not establish that the R36 will use an all-solid-state pack. Nissan has not announced the R36 battery chemistry, capacity, charging system, or even whether the production car will be a plug-in hybrid or a different type of hybrid. Solid-state technology should therefore be listed as a possible technology link, not as a production certainty.

Chassis, all-wheel drive, and driving technology

A new chassis is one of the better-supported claims

The R36 is expected to use a new chassis rather than a lightly modified R35 platform. That is one of the clearest technical points to emerge from the executive reporting.

Nissan has not disclosed the platform’s construction, materials, wheelbase, engine placement, suspension design, brake supplier, weight target, or aerodynamic development. Claims about carbon-fiber construction, a specific wheelbase, a particular suspension arrangement, or a precise curb weight are currently speculation unless Nissan provides further information.

All-wheel drive is highly likely, but the hardware is unknown

All-wheel drive is central to the modern GT-R’s identity and is therefore one of the safest qualitative predictions. The R35 built its reputation around launching hard and generating usable performance in a wide range of conditions. A successor that abandons that character would be a major philosophical change.

Hyper Force uses Nissan’s e-4ORCE electric all-wheel-control system, which is one reason some coverage has connected the concept to the R36. That does not confirm that the production hybrid will use e-4ORCE. The R36 could use a mechanically driven all-wheel-drive system, electric front-axle assistance, a hybridized version of an existing approach, or an entirely new torque-distribution strategy.

The responsible forecast is that the R36 will probably preserve all-wheel-drive performance and rapid torque management. It is not responsible to state that it will definitely use e-4ORCE.

What hybrid assistance could change

If Nissan chooses a performance-oriented hybrid system, electric motors could provide torque fill before the turbochargers are fully effective, sharpen launch response, and offer additional control over torque distribution. The system might also allow Nissan to reposition or reduce some mechanical components.

Those are engineering inferences from how hybrid performance systems can work. They are not reported R36 specifications. No credible source has established the number of motors, their combined output, the battery size, or how the system will behave during repeated high-load driving.

Performance rumors: what can and cannot be claimed

There is no official R36 horsepower figure, acceleration time, top speed, Nürburgring target, range figure, battery size, engine specification, or curb weight.

Claims that the R36 will make more than 1,300 horsepower should be rejected unless they are clearly referring to Hyper Force. The 1,300-plus-horsepower figures belong to the all-electric concept and related reporting; they are not published R36 specifications.

A hybrid GT-R could be extremely powerful, but the most defensible prediction is qualitative rather than numerical. Nissan will likely prioritize:

  • rapid launch and throttle response;
  • repeatable performance during track driving;
  • traction and stability in poor conditions;
  • high-speed thermal durability; and
  • a performance experience that retains the GT-R’s distinct identity.

Nissan’s “accessible supercar” positioning is also relevant. Car and Driver reported that Nissan wants the successor’s price to remain aligned with the R35’s inflation-adjusted positioning. That is a product philosophy, not a confirmed MSRP. It does not mean the R36 will be inexpensive, nor does it establish that Nissan can deliver the same value proposition after adding a new chassis and hybrid technology.

Timing: when could the next GT-R arrive?

The currently supportable timing window is:

  1. By 2028: Nissan North America executive Ponz Pandikuthira said enthusiasts could see concrete announcements by this point.
  2. Before the end of the 2020s: Nissan hopes to have an R36 on the road before the decade turns.
  3. 2028 or 2029: a reasonable interpretation for a reveal or production launch, but still an inference rather than a promised date.
  4. 2030: a plausible outer edge if development or market rollout slips, but not a Nissan-announced deadline.

None of those statements guarantees U.S. availability in a particular year. A reveal, production start, first-market delivery, and U.S. launch could all occur at different times. Nissan has not published a market-by-market rollout plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the schedule could change

Nissan’s financial restructuring and broader product priorities create meaningful schedule risk. Reporting on the company’s turnaround has described pressure to reduce costs and simplify development, while Nissan’s own leadership materials identify Re:Nissan as a recovery plan.

That does not make the GT-R program unreal. Nissan leadership has described the car as a strategic “heartbeat” or halo product and one of the company’s strongest brands. A halo car can reinforce the identity of the entire company, but it still competes internally for engineering resources, investment, manufacturing capacity, and regulatory work.

The program could therefore be delayed, technically re-scoped, launched in limited markets, or introduced later than the current late-decade aspiration. Strategic importance and schedule certainty are not the same thing.

Popular R36 rumors that should be downgraded or rejected

Rumor Verdict Why
“The R36 is definitely the production Hyper Force.” Unsupported Hyper Force is an official Nissan concept, but Nissan has not confirmed its production identity or direct design carryover.
“The R36 will make 1,341 horsepower.” Unsupported That kind of output claim belongs to Hyper Force reporting, not a published R36 specification.
“The R36 will definitely use solid-state batteries.” Unsupported Nissan has an FY2028 solid-state EV objective, but has not tied that battery technology to the GT-R successor.
“The R36 will be an R35 facelift.” Contradicted by current reporting Nissan executive comments describe a new chassis and an all-new car.
“The launch date is fixed.” Unsupported Nissan has supplied a broad late-decade target, not a firm date or market-specific schedule.
“The VR38DETT is confirmed unchanged.” Overstated Reporting supports the possibility that the block survives, while also describing the overall powertrain as mostly new.

What would confirm the remaining rumors?

The next meaningful evidence will need to come from Nissan itself or from documentation that can be independently verified. The most useful confirmations would be:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • an official production name and model designation;
  • a formal powertrain description explaining the engine, motors, battery, and transmission;
  • confirmation of whether the combustion engine mechanically drives the wheels;
  • official photographs or production-intent design sketches;
  • platform, suspension, and all-wheel-drive details;
  • certified output, weight, performance, and efficiency figures;
  • pricing and market availability; and
  • a firm production and delivery schedule.

Until those details appear, a source saying “Nissan is considering” something should not be rewritten as “Nissan will use” it. That distinction is particularly important for the VR38 block, solid-state batteries, e-POWER, e-4ORCE, and Hyper Force styling.

The current R36 probability ranking

  1. Most likely: a new-chassis GT-R with hybrid assistance and a combustion engine retained for endurance and character.
  2. Credible but unconfirmed: a heavily revised VR38-based twin-turbo V6 forming part of that hybrid system.
  3. Likely in spirit: all-wheel-drive performance, fast torque management, and design cues influenced by Nissan’s newer performance concepts.
  4. Possible but unproven: plug-in capability, Nissan e-POWER-derived technology, or solid-state battery involvement.
  5. Currently less likely: a pure battery-electric R36 based directly on Hyper Force.
  6. Not established: the final horsepower figure, 1,300-plus-hp output, exact styling, price, launch date, and U.S. availability.

Nissan’s public statements have moved the R36 beyond pure internet speculation. The company has acknowledged the program, described the GT-R as a strategic brand product, indicated that the successor needs a new chassis, and supplied a late-decade development window. What remains unknown is nearly everything that determines how the car will actually drive and what it will cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The next GT-R is real, but the internet is still filling in too many blanks. The best-supported picture is a new-chassis, late-decade successor with hybrid assistance and a combustion engine retained for track durability and GT-R character. The VR38 block may continue in revised form, while all-wheel-drive performance is likely to remain central.

Hyper Force is an important design and technology clue, not a confirmed production car. Its 1,300-plus-horsepower claims and solid-state battery ambitions should not be presented as R36 specifications. Until Nissan publishes the powertrain, styling, pricing, and market schedule, “R36” describes a developing program—not a fully known car.
