Every Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Minivan You Could Buy in 2025

The 2025 U.S. choices were the Toyota Sienna Hybrid, Kia Carnival Hybrid, and Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid. Here is how they compare, plus the international MPVs sold in Japan, Europe, Korea, China, and other markets.

In the United States, the 2025 list is only three vehicles: the Toyota Sienna Hybrid, Kia Carnival Hybrid, and Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid. The Sienna is the broadest all-around choice and the only one of the three with available all-wheel drive; the Carnival is a front-wheel-drive regular hybrid with strong output; and the Pacifica is the only U.S.-market minivan here that can drive on electricity alone for a meaningful local commute.

The worldwide answer is much longer. Depending on how broadly minivan and MPV are defined, 2025 also brought hybrid or plug-in-hybrid passenger vehicles such as the Hyundai Staria, Toyota Alphard, Toyota Vellfire, Toyota Noah, Toyota Voxy, Toyota Sienta, Lexus LM, Volkswagen Multivan, Ford Tourneo Custom, Denza D9, BYD Xia, and Buick GL8 Lu Shang.

That international list is geographic, not a U.S. shopping list. A vehicle officially sold in Japan, China, Korea, Europe, Australia, or another market is not automatically importable, certifiable, warrantable, or legally registrable in the United States.

The three hybrid minivans available in the U.S. for 2025

For a new-vehicle shopper in the United States or Canada, the practical shortlist is straightforward:

Model Powertrain Published 2025 figures Drive and configuration U.S. pricing or range
Toyota Sienna Hybrid Regular, self-charging hybrid 245 total system hp; 36 mpg combined FWD or 35 mpg combined AWD, manufacturer-estimated Front- or all-wheel drive; LE, XLE, XSE, Woodland Edition, Limited, and Platinum grades MSRP from $39,485 before destination and other charges
Kia Carnival Hybrid Regular hybrid 242 combined hp; 271 lb-ft combined torque; 1.49-kWh battery Front-wheel drive; LXS, EX, SX, and SX-Prestige grades; six-speed automatic Published U.S. trim pricing began at $40,500
Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid Plug-in hybrid Up to 32 miles of electric driving; 82 MPGe; up to 520 miles total range, manufacturer estimates Select and Pinnacle PHEV versions; seating and second-row arrangement vary Sold in the U.S. and Puerto Rico; external charging required for electric driving

Those numbers are not perfectly interchangeable. Toyota reports total system horsepower and combined fuel economy, Kia reports combined hybrid output and torque, and Chrysler emphasizes electric range, MPGe, and total range. They are useful for shopping, but they are not the same measurement.

Toyota Sienna Hybrid: the all-around U.S. pick

The 2025 Toyota Sienna was sold exclusively as a hybrid, so buyers did not have to trade fuel-saving technology for a gasoline-only trim. Toyota rated the system at 245 total system horsepower and estimated 36 mpg combined with front-wheel drive or 35 mpg combined with all-wheel drive. AWD availability is the Sienna’s major practical distinction among the mainstream U.S. minivans in this comparison.

The 2025 range included LE, XLE, XSE, Woodland Edition, Limited, and Platinum grades. The 2025 update added an advanced rear-seat reminder, revised interior materials, USB-C charging, and revised wheel and trim details. Toyota also made a vacuum and refrigerator box available on upper trims. The update and the full grade list are detailed in Toyota’s 2025 Sienna announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Sienna is a conventional hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid. Its battery is replenished by the hybrid system and regenerative braking; there is no external charging port and no official electric-only commuting range to plan around. That makes it simpler for buyers who want better fuel economy without changing home-parking habits.

For family use, protect the floor and cargo area only after confirming the exact year, trim, drivetrain, and seating layout. A targeted search for 2025 Toyota Sienna all-weather floor mats is more useful than buying a generic minivan liner, but fitment still needs to be checked before ordering. AWD, second-row seating, and trim-specific floor shapes can affect compatibility.

Kia Carnival Hybrid: a powerful front-drive alternative

Kia introduced the Carnival Hybrid to the U.S. market for 2025. Kia’s specifications describe a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder full-parallel hybrid with a 1.49-kWh lithium-ion-polymer battery, six-speed automatic transmission, front-wheel drive, 242 combined horsepower, and 271 lb-ft of combined torque. The U.S. grades were LXS, EX, SX, and SX-Prestige, with published pricing beginning at $40,500 for the LXS. See Kia’s 2025 Carnival Hybrid specifications.

The Carnival is often called an MPV in Kia’s materials, but it belongs in a minivan comparison: it has three rows, sliding rear doors, and a family-oriented passenger layout. It is a regular hybrid, not a PHEV. The small traction battery supports the hybrid system, but owners do not plug the vehicle in and should not expect a separate electric-range figure like the Pacifica’s.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Carnival’s 271 lb-ft torque rating gives it a distinct powertrain profile, while the Sienna offers the stronger published horsepower figure and an AWD option. The choice is therefore less about a simple horsepower winner and more about priorities: front-drive hybrid performance and Carnival packaging versus Sienna fuel-economy and AWD availability.

Owners carrying strollers, sports equipment, muddy shoes, or pets may want to compare 2025 Kia Carnival Hybrid floor mats and cargo liner options. Confirm that the product is for the hybrid model and the correct seating configuration; a liner designed for another Carnival grade or layout may not fit the same way.

Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid: the U.S. electric-driving choice

The 2025 Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid remained the principal plug-in-hybrid minivan in the U.S. market. Chrysler listed Select and Pinnacle PHEV versions and claimed up to 32 miles of all-electric driving, 82 MPGe, and up to 520 miles of total range with a full battery and fuel tank. Those are manufacturer estimates; weather, speed, payload, temperature, terrain, and accessory use can reduce real-world electric or total range. Chrysler’s model information is available in its 2025 Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid materials.

Unlike the Sienna and Carnival, the Pacifica can be charged through an external port as well as regenerative braking. When its usable electric range is depleted, it can continue operating as a gasoline-electric hybrid, so a long trip does not depend on finding a charger at every stop. The central PHEV trade-off is that electric commuting works best when the owner regularly charges the vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not describe every Pacifica PHEV as an eight-passenger vehicle. Seating capacity and second-row equipment depend on the selected version and configuration, as Chrysler explains in its Pacifica Hybrid FAQ.

For home charging, first determine whether the vehicle’s included or factory charging hardware meets your routine. A Pacifica PHEV Level 2 charger can be a useful shopping category for owners who want faster at-home charging, but connector type, amperage, cable length, weather exposure, and vehicle compatibility must be confirmed before purchase. If the home does not already have suitable electrical service, compare a home charger installation for a plug-in hybrid quote and have the electrician evaluate the panel, circuit, cable route, and local code requirements. HEV owners do not need this equipment merely because their vehicles are electrified.

Hybrid versus plug-in hybrid: what changes for the buyer?

Question Regular hybrid, or HEV Plug-in hybrid, or PHEV
Can it be plugged into an outlet? No. The battery is replenished by the hybrid system and regenerative braking. Yes. External charging is part of the design.
Can it drive on electricity alone? It can use electric propulsion as part of its hybrid operation, but these models do not provide a comparable planned electric-commuting range. Yes, within its available charge and operating conditions. The 2025 Pacifica claimed up to 32 miles.
What happens after the battery is depleted? It continues operating as a hybrid. It can continue as a gasoline-electric hybrid, with the engine doing more of the work.
Who is the best fit? Buyers who want simple ownership and improved fuel economy without home charging. Buyers who can charge regularly and want to cover local trips electrically while retaining gasoline range for long journeys.

In short, a regular hybrid is usually the lower-friction choice: no charger, no charging routine, and no need to calculate whether a trip starts with a full battery. A PHEV has greater potential fuel and emissions savings on short trips, but only if it is charged. The Pacifica is therefore not automatically the better choice for every buyer; it is the more capable electric-driving choice for the buyer whose parking and driving patterns support it.

International hybrid and plug-in-hybrid minivans and MPVs

The following vehicles were officially offered for retail order, sale, or delivery in at least one market during calendar 2025. This broad inventory includes conventional minivans, luxury MPVs, and passenger vans with three or more rows. The market label is essential: most of these vehicles were not part of the U.S. new-car lineup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

South Korea, Europe, and selected export markets

Hyundai Staria Hybrid

Hyundai offered the Staria Hybrid as a passenger MPV in markets including South Korea, Europe, and selected export regions. Passenger configurations included a seven-seat Premium and a nine-seat Wagon, although exact equipment and availability varied by country.

The system uses a 1.6-liter T-GDi gasoline engine, a 54-kW electric motor, and a 1.49-kWh lithium-ion-polymer battery. Hyundai describes it as a full-parallel hybrid using regenerative braking. It is a regular hybrid rather than a PHEV. Hyundai’s regional model information is in the Staria Hybrid overview.

The Staria Hybrid should not be confused with the later battery-electric Staria Electric. The electric model is outside this list, and Hyundai announced its sales timing for the first half of 2026 rather than the 2025 hybrid period.

Japan and selected Asian markets

Toyota Alphard Hybrid and Toyota Vellfire Hybrid

The Toyota Alphard and Toyota Vellfire are large, premium passenger minivans sold primarily in Japan and other Asian markets. Both nameplates had conventional hybrid versions in their regional lineups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They also became more significant to a 2025 list because Toyota announced six-seat plug-in-hybrid versions of the new Alphard and Vellfire for Japanese sale beginning January 31, 2025. That date is explicit in Toyota’s announcement of the Alphard and Vellfire plug-in hybrids. Exact grades, equipment, pricing, and export availability are market-specific.

Toyota Noah Hybrid and Toyota Voxy Hybrid

The Noah and Voxy are Japan-market medium-size minivans with hybrid grades. Toyota’s Japanese catalog information identifies seven- and eight-seat layouts and front- or four-wheel-drive availability for Noah hybrid versions; Toyota owner documentation separately identifies Noah Hybrid and Voxy Hybrid systems. The regional lineup and equipment should be checked carefully because seating, drive system, and trim combinations are not necessarily identical between the two nameplates.

Neither is a U.S.-market new vehicle. The relevant evidence comes from Toyota’s Japan-market documentation, including the Noah hybrid documentation.

Toyota Sienta Hybrid

The smaller Toyota Sienta was sold in hybrid form in Japan and selected Asian markets. It is a multi-row passenger MPV and belongs in a broad international minivan inventory, but it is substantially smaller than the Sienna, Alphard, Vellfire, and Carnival.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Sienta is not sold new in the United States. Toyota’s historical product-line material identifies the Sienta within its minivan family, while regional catalogs and manuals document the hybrid versions. The classification context is available in Toyota’s global vehicle product-line information.

Europe, Australia, and selected other markets

Lexus LM 350h

The Lexus LM 350h is a luxury MPV rather than a mainstream family minivan, but its three-row passenger role and hybrid powertrain qualify it under this article’s broad definition. Lexus offered four- and seven-seat configurations in relevant markets.

Lexus Europe describes a self-charging 2.5-liter hybrid producing up to 250 DIN horsepower, with E-Four electric all-wheel drive on applicable versions. It was sold in Europe and selected Asian and Middle Eastern markets, but it was not part of the Lexus U.S. lineup in 2025. See the Lexus LM 350h information from Lexus Europe.

Volkswagen Multivan eHybrid

The Volkswagen Multivan is a passenger van/MPV with a plug-in-hybrid option in Europe, Australia, and selected other markets. It is more van-derived than the typical North American minivan, but its multi-row passenger mission makes it a reasonable inclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles announced an eHybrid 4MOTION variant on June 30, 2025. That version used a 180-kW/245-PS system, a 19.7-kWh battery, and a claimed electric range of up to 95 km under the applicable European testing regime. A front-wheel-drive 218-PS eHybrid had already preceded it. The figures and timing are reported in Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ eHybrid announcement.

The Volkswagen California camper derivative also received the eHybrid 4MOTION system, but it is better treated as a camper-van derivative rather than counted as another mainstream minivan nameplate.

Ford Tourneo Custom PHEV

Ford offered the passenger-oriented Tourneo Custom with a plug-in-hybrid powertrain in Europe. Ford said customers could order the Tourneo Custom PHEV for delivery from spring 2024, alongside diesel and battery-electric E-Tourneo Custom versions, so the PHEV remained an eligible passenger-van choice during 2025.

It is a large passenger van with multiple seating configurations, not a U.S.-market minivan. The relevant vehicle is the passenger Tourneo version; commercial Transit Custom derivatives should not be substituted for it. Ford’s official product information is on the Tourneo Custom page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

China

Denza D9 DM-i

The Denza D9 was sold as a premium MPV in both plug-in-hybrid and battery-electric forms. Only the D9 DM-i belongs in this article. The battery-electric D9 is excluded even though it shares the same broader nameplate.

Denza’s official product page documents the 2025 D9, while contemporary 2025 market information identifies DM-i plug-in-hybrid versions. Availability, specification, and export status differ by country; the relevant starting point is Denza’s China-market 2025 D9 page.

BYD Xia DM-i

BYD launched the Xia for Chinese retail sale in January 2025 as a plug-in-hybrid MPV. The Xia DM-i is included here as a China-market vehicle, not as a U.S. alternative. The available evidence for this entry is less complete than the manufacturer documentation for several other vehicles in this list, so exact grades, local pricing, specifications, and export availability should receive country-specific verification before a purchase decision.

The model’s identity and launch timing are summarized in the available BYD Xia reference. It should be described as the plug-in-hybrid Xia DM-i; a battery-electric BYD MPV should not be silently counted as the same vehicle.

How to choose among the 2025 models

Choose the Toyota Sienna if you want the safest U.S. all-around answer

  • Every 2025 U.S. Sienna was a hybrid.
  • It had the strongest published horsepower figure of the U.S. regular hybrids listed here at 245 total system horsepower.
  • It offered manufacturer-estimated fuel economy of 36 mpg combined in FWD form and 35 mpg combined with AWD.
  • AWD was available, including on a vehicle designed for three-row family use.
  • It required no external charging.

The Sienna is the logical starting point for buyers who want one vehicle for school runs, road trips, winter weather, and ordinary commuting without changing their ownership routine.

Choose the Kia Carnival Hybrid if you prioritize hybrid torque and Carnival packaging

  • The 2025 hybrid was a genuine full-parallel hybrid, not a mild-hybrid system.
  • Its 271 lb-ft combined torque rating exceeded its 242-hp output in the way Kia presents the figures, giving it a distinct powertrain character.
  • It was offered only with front-wheel drive in the cited U.S. specifications.
  • It was not a plug-in and did not provide a separate electric-only range.
  • It began at a slightly higher published starting price than the Sienna, although final transaction prices, destination charges, incentives, and equipment can change the comparison.

It suits buyers who want a modern family MPV with hybrid assistance but do not need AWD or external charging.

Choose the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid if you can charge regularly

  • It was the U.S. choice with meaningful electric-only driving: up to 32 claimed miles.
  • It retained gasoline capability and claimed up to 520 miles of total range.
  • It could be charged externally as well as through regenerative braking.
  • Its Select and Pinnacle PHEV configurations did not all have identical seating arrangements.

It is the best fit for a household that can plug in at home or work and whose daily driving often fits within the electric range. If charging will be infrequent, the theoretical PHEV advantage becomes smaller and a regular hybrid may be the simpler purchase.

Choose an international model only after solving the market-availability problem

The Alphard, Vellfire, Lexus LM, Noah, Voxy, Sienta, Staria, Multivan, Tourneo Custom, D9, Xia, and GL8 Lu Shang expand the answer globally, but they also add practical questions:

  1. Was it officially sold in your country? A foreign-market model may not have local registration approval or a manufacturer warranty.
  2. Can it be serviced locally? Parts, diagnostic tools, software, and trained technicians may be limited outside the original market.
  3. Does the powertrain meet local rules? Emissions certification, safety equipment, charging hardware, and documentation can vary by region.
  4. Does the seating configuration fit your use? Luxury MPVs may prioritize reclining second-row seats over maximum passenger capacity, while passenger vans can have multiple wheelbase and seat layouts.
  5. What does the claimed range mean? Electric-range figures from Europe, China, Japan, and other regions may use different test procedures and should not be compared as though they were identical.

What is not on the list

Several familiar vehicles are excluded for specific reasons:

  • Honda Odyssey: no hybrid or plug-in-hybrid version was identified in the 2025 U.S.-market research.
  • Volkswagen ID. Buzz: battery-electric only, so it is not a hybrid or plug-in hybrid.
  • Hyundai Staria Electric: battery-electric only and associated with a later sales timetable; it is not part of the 2025 Staria Hybrid entry.
  • Kia Carnival gasoline: the gasoline Carnival is a minivan, but it does not meet this article’s electrified-powertrain requirement. Only the Carnival Hybrid is counted.
  • Conventional commercial vans: Transit Custom and similar commercial derivatives are excluded unless the passenger-branded version, such as Tourneo Custom PHEV, is specifically being discussed.
  • Volkswagen California: its eHybrid system is noted as a camper derivative, but it is not counted as a separate mainstream minivan.
  • Battery-electric MPVs: electric-only versions such as the battery-electric Denza D9 are excluded even when a related PHEV version qualifies.

2025 buyer checklist

  1. Decide whether you need electric-only driving. If yes, focus on the Pacifica PHEV or a market-specific PHEV. If no, the Sienna or Carnival avoids external charging.
  2. Check drivetrain before comparing trims. The Sienna offers FWD and AWD; the cited Carnival Hybrid specifications identify FWD. Do not assume that a foreign-market drivetrain is offered in the U.S.
  3. Confirm the exact seating layout. Pacifica seating varies by version; Staria has seven- and nine-seat passenger configurations; Lexus LM versions include four- and seven-seat layouts; Alphard and Vellfire PHEV versions announced for Japan are six-seat vehicles; Noah and Voxy configurations vary by grade and market.
  4. Use the correct test figure. Sienna’s 36/35 mpg figures, Pacifica’s 82 MPGe and 32-mile electric estimate, and Multivan’s 95-km European electric estimate come from different manufacturer and regional contexts.
  5. Verify the market, not just the model name. A Japan-market Noah Hybrid, China-market D9 DM-i, or Europe-market Tourneo Custom PHEV is not automatically a U.S.-legal new-car option.
  6. Budget for the actual ownership setup. PHEV buyers should account for charging access and electrical work if needed. HEV buyers should spend that budget on ordinary maintenance and model-specific fitment rather than unnecessary charging hardware.
  7. Check accessory fitment by VIN or exact configuration. Floor mats, cargo liners, seat-back protectors, and organizers can differ with model year, trim, AWD, second-row seats, and regional specifications.

There is no single authoritative worldwide registry of every hybrid MPV sold during 2025, and manufacturers use minivan, MPV, passenger van, and luxury MPV terminology differently. This is therefore an evidence-backed market inventory under a stated broad definition, not a guarantee that every local trim or gray-market import has been captured.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hybrid minivans could you buy new in the United States in 2025?

The U.S. shortlist was the Toyota Sienna Hybrid, Kia Carnival Hybrid, and Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid. The Sienna and Carnival were regular hybrids; the Pacifica was the plug-in hybrid.

Which 2025 minivan had electric-only driving?

The Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid was the U.S.-market choice with a stated electric-only range, rated by Chrysler at up to 32 miles. The Toyota Sienna and Kia Carnival Hybrid were regular hybrids and were not externally chargeable.

Which 2025 hybrid minivan offered all-wheel drive?

The Toyota Sienna had AWD availability in the U.S. lineup. The cited 2025 Kia Carnival Hybrid specifications list front-wheel drive. International models can have different drivetrain choices, so a foreign-market specification should not be assumed to apply to a U.S. vehicle.

Can I import a Toyota Alphard, BYD Xia, or Denza D9 DM-i into the United States?

Not automatically. Their inclusion means they were officially offered in a relevant market during 2025, not that they were certified or readily registrable in the United States. Check U.S. safety, emissions, import, registration, warranty, parts, and charging requirements before treating one as a practical purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Kia Carnival Hybrid a plug-in hybrid?

No. The 2025 U.S. Carnival Hybrid was a regular full-parallel hybrid with a 1.49-kWh battery and front-wheel drive. It did not have an external charging port or a published plug-in electric range.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: U.S. shoppers had three electrified minivan choices in 2025. Buy the Toyota Sienna Hybrid for the most straightforward all-around ownership and available AWD, the Kia Carnival Hybrid for a front-drive hybrid with strong torque, or the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid if regular charging and electric-only local trips matter. The rest of the list is real but regional: Japan, China, Europe, Korea, Australia, and selected export markets offered a much wider MPV field, yet none should be treated as automatically available or legal to buy in the United States.
