E-Cat Power is not a proven unlimited-range EV technology. Leonardo Corporation reports that a Renault Twizy 80 fitted with a claimed 3 kW generator drove for more than six hours while its displayed battery charge rose from 68% to 83%. That result remains a company-reported demonstration, not an independent certification or proof of commercial readiness.

The short answer

E-Cat Power is not a commercially established “unlimited-range” EV system. Leonardo Corporation says it installed a 3 kW E-Cat Power generator in a Renault Twizy 80 and drove the vehicle for more than six hours while its reported battery state of charge rose from 68% to 83%. That is a company-reported demonstration, not independent proof that an electric vehicle can drive indefinitely or that the technology is ready for production cars.[CIT-001]

The distinction matters even more because Leonardo’s latest commercialization update located for this assessment, dated May 13, 2026, said reliable self-sustain—defined as producing enough excess electricity to power the E-Cat system itself—was then achievable only with industrial-scale megawatt thermoelectric facilities. The same update said product specifications were being revised and that generator preorders had been temporarily suspended.[CIT-004]

What happened in the E-Cat Power EV demonstration?

According to Leonardo’s October 14, 2024 whitepaper, the first public E-Cat Power reveal took place on September 27, 2024, in Latina, Italy. The company reported the following:

#1 Best Overall
5KW Electric Vehicle Range Extender Generator, Three Wheels Car Frequency Conversion Battery Gasoline Range Extender (72V)
  • Power loss auto start
  • Full power protection shutdown
  • Frequency conversion for high efficiency and fuel saving
  • Controller free wiring
  • One key electric start
Detail Leonardo’s reported result
Vehicle Renault Twizy 80
Generator A 3 kW E-Cat Power generator installed in the vehicle
Driving period More than six hours
Reported battery state of charge 68% at the start; 83% after six hours
Company’s interpretation The generator maintained and increased the EV’s battery charge while the vehicle was moving

A 15-percentage-point increase in displayed battery state of charge is visually compelling. But it is not the same thing as an independently audited energy balance. State-of-charge readings are estimates produced by a vehicle’s battery-management system, and a credible energy assessment would also need to measure the battery’s actual electrical input and output, the generator’s output, the vehicle’s traction demand, regenerative braking, auxiliary loads, and every external or concealed source of energy.

The demonstration therefore supports a narrower statement: Leonardo reported that this particular Twizy test produced that result under the conditions described in its whitepaper. It does not establish that the vehicle could run indefinitely at any speed, on any road, in cold or hot weather, up hills, with a full payload, or under an independently controlled test protocol. Leonardo’s own whitepaper said independent scientific evaluation of the system’s sustainability and actual performance was still awaited. It also described environmental ratings as provisional and based on limited, not-yet-independently-verified data.[CIT-001]

Why “unlimited range” is a bigger claim than “the battery gained charge”

An EV has unlimited practical range only if its energy source can continuously provide at least as much usable power as the vehicle consumes, after accounting for conversion losses and the generator’s own operating requirements. If the generator produces less net power than the car needs, the battery still falls—even if it falls more slowly. If it produces more, the battery may charge while driving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That relationship does not depend on the marketing label attached to the generator. A 3 kW rating, for example, is not by itself proof that 3 kW of usable net power reached the battery continuously. The relevant questions are whether the rating is electrical input or output, whether it is continuous or peak power, how much power the generator consumes, and how the result changes under different loads.

The reported Twizy test also cannot automatically be generalized to larger EVs. A compact urban vehicle has different aerodynamic drag, mass, tire resistance, auxiliary loads, battery capacity, and power demand from a family hatchback, SUV, or truck. A generator that appears adequate for one controlled drive would not necessarily sustain another vehicle—or even the same vehicle at highway speed.

What is E-Cat Power supposed to be?

Leonardo describes E-Cat Power as a continuous electrical power source based on its E-Cat and NGU technology. In the company’s 2024 whitepaper, the basic NGU Power Cell is described as a 12-volt, 10-watt unit. Larger generators are said to be built by wiring cells in series and parallel.[CIT-001]

  • 100-watt units;
  • 3 kW units, including the generator reported in the Twizy demonstration;
  • 1 MW configurations; and
  • 2 MW configurations.

The whitepaper presented some of these configurations as planned or available for preorder at the time. That historical description should not be confused with current availability: Leonardo’s later update said product specifications were changing and that the previously offered electricity generators were no longer available for preorder.[CIT-001][CIT-004]

The proposed reaction

Older Leonardo patent-related material describes the claimed E-Cat reaction as an exothermic reaction involving lithium and hydrogen, catalyzed by nickel or another Group 10 element. That is Leonardo’s description of the proposed mechanism, not independent confirmation that the reaction produces the reported electrical output.[CIT-003]

The 2024 whitepaper gives a newer conceptual explanation involving electron behavior and the extraction of energy from a proposed zero-point-energy field. This, too, is presented as Leonardo’s interpretation. It should not be reported as an accepted explanation in physics or as a settled account of how the generator works.[CIT-001]

In practical terms, the central unresolved issue is not whether a device can be given a patent-oriented technical description. It is whether unaffiliated investigators can repeatedly measure the claimed energy production while accounting for all chemical, electrical, thermal, and environmental inputs.

Does E-Cat Power have a production-car version?

There is no evidence in the supplied research that E-Cat Power has been approved, certified, mass-produced, or generally offered for installation in road vehicles. The 2024 whitepaper described a reported mobile demonstration, but it did not establish a consumer-ready vehicle integration program or an independently validated retrofit kit.[CIT-001]

The later commercialization update makes the situation less—not more—favorable for anyone looking for an available unlimited-range car. In the May 13, 2026 update reproduced by E-Cat World, Leonardo said:

  • reliable self-sustain was, at that time, achievable only with industrial-scale megawatt thermoelectric facilities;
  • Leonardo and a global licensee intended to develop industrial thermoelectric plants;
  • the company planned E-Cat heaters for commercial and household applications;
  • product specifications were being changed; and
  • preordering had been temporarily suspended until the new product range was defined.

That update describes a shift toward large stationary systems and heaters. It does not confirm that the 3 kW mobile configuration from the 2024 demonstration remained a product, and it gives no basis for describing an E-Cat-powered consumer EV as commercially available in August 2026.[CIT-004]

What about the separate Ecat.tech “Ecat-car” project?

A separate Ecat.tech page describes an Ecat-car research project using a Tesla turbine and generator to recharge a battery and reduce or eliminate dependence on charging stations. The same page states that its research and development is independent and not affiliated with Andrea Rossi or Leonardo Corporation.[CIT-002]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction is important. The Ecat.tech project is not evidence that Leonardo has commercialized E-Cat Power, nor is it independent confirmation of Leonardo’s Twizy demonstration. It should be treated as a separate promotional or investment-oriented project with its own claims and its own evidentiary burden.

Why independent verification is essential

E-Cat claims are not being evaluated in a scientific vacuum. Earlier E-Cat demonstrations and tests have drawn sustained criticism over measurement conditions and independence.

A 2014 New Energy Times investigation reported that Andrea Rossi was involved in operating the device, starting and stopping the reactor, and handling powder samples during a test that collaborators described as independent. The investigation argued that those circumstances and relationships weakened the claimed independence of the evidence.[CIT-006]

A 2019 Skeptical Inquirer investigation described the E-Cat as a claimed cold-fusion or LENR device and argued that demonstrations had not supplied the transparent, independent validation required for such a significant scientific claim.[CIT-005]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 2004 U.S. Department of Energy review of cold-fusion research is not a review of the 2024 E-Cat Power EV test specifically. It is nevertheless relevant background: the review concluded that it found no new convincing evidence for LENR and that reported experiments lacked the care needed to establish convincing evidence.[CIT-007]

What a serious replication would need to measure

A persuasive test would need to be designed and run by investigators who are genuinely independent of the inventor, manufacturer, licensee, and investor community. At minimum, it would need:

  1. Complete electrical accounting. Calibrated instruments should measure power entering the generator, power leaving it, power delivered to the vehicle battery, and the vehicle’s total electrical consumption. Measurements should cover startup, shutdown, steady operation, transients, and auxiliary systems.
  2. Battery-state validation. The displayed percentage on the dashboard should not be the only evidence of a charge increase. Battery-terminal voltage and current, coulomb counting, pack temperature, battery-management data, and an independently calibrated state-of-charge estimate should be reconciled.
  3. Isolation from hidden energy sources. Wiring, batteries, capacitors, wireless systems, control electronics, and test equipment should be inspected and documented. The test setup should make it impossible for an unreported source to supply the measured energy.
  4. Independent operation. The test team should control access to the device, materials, instrumentation, software, and vehicle. Any fuel, gas, powder, catalyst, or replaceable component should have documented custody from preparation through teardown.
  5. Thermal and radiation measurements where relevant. If the proposed mechanism is nuclear-scale or LENR-related, calorimetry, radiation monitoring, shielding records, and background controls must be disclosed rather than inferred from a vehicle’s charge display.
  6. Replication. Multiple units should be tested by more than one unaffiliated laboratory, using a prepublished protocol and raw data that other researchers can inspect.
  7. Peer-reviewed disclosure. The device construction, control system, test conditions, uncertainty calculations, failed runs, and full energy balance should be available for technical scrutiny.

A consumer instrument can help a reader understand ordinary charging power, but it cannot by itself validate an extraordinary generator claim. For educational comparison, an EV energy monitor can show how much power a conventional charging session appears to deliver; it is not an E-Cat component, a substitute for calibrated laboratory equipment, or proof of battery state of charge.

Established facts versus unresolved claims

What the documentation supports What it does not establish
Leonardo published a dated whitepaper describing E-Cat Power and NGU Power Cells. That unaffiliated laboratories have independently replicated the technology.
The whitepaper reports a September 27, 2024 demonstration involving a Renault Twizy 80 and a claimed 3 kW onboard generator. That the complete input and output energy balance was audited under independent controls.
The whitepaper reports more than six hours of driving and a displayed battery state-of-charge increase from 68% to 83%. That the result means unlimited range for arbitrary EVs, speeds, terrain, weather, payloads, or duty cycles.
A May 2026 update said reliable self-sustain was limited to industrial-scale megawatt thermoelectric facilities and that generator preorders were suspended. That a consumer E-Cat generator or E-Cat-powered road car was available for purchase in August 2026.
Leonardo’s own whitepaper acknowledged that independent scientific validation was still pending. That the proposed LENR or zero-point-energy mechanisms are accepted explanations for the reported performance.
Leonardo’s materials describe patent protection for claimed technology. That a patent proves commercial performance, operating reliability, or the proposed physical mechanism.

Does the patent prove that E-Cat Power works?

No. Leonardo’s materials describe a U.S. patent protecting claimed fluid-heater technology, but patent grant and patentability are legal determinations about an invention’s claims and disclosures. They are not independent engineering validation, a production certification, or a performance test under controlled conditions.[CIT-003]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same principle applies to a whitepaper, demonstration video, customer testimonial, preorder page, or reported state-of-charge change: each may document that a claim was made or that an event was presented, but none replaces transparent replication and a complete energy audit.

Verdict: intriguing demonstration, not an unlimited-range EV solution

E-Cat Power deserves attention because the reported result is unusually specific: a named vehicle, a stated generator rating, a six-hour drive, and a claimed increase in battery charge. But specificity is not the same as verification.

The strongest defensible conclusion is that Leonardo Corporation reported a 2024 demonstration in which a Renault Twizy 80 fitted with a claimed 3 kW E-Cat Power generator ended with a higher displayed battery state of charge. The evidence supplied here does not establish the full energy balance, independent replication, a validated LENR or zero-point-energy mechanism, general EV compatibility, regulatory approval, or commercial availability.

Until those gaps are closed, E-Cat Power should be described as an intriguing but unverified energy-generation claim—not as a proven technology, a commercially available range-extender, or an EV with literally unlimited range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did E-Cat Power prove an EV can have unlimited range?

No. Leonardo reported that a Renault Twizy 80’s displayed battery state of charge rose from 68% to 83% during a drive lasting more than six hours. The company’s whitepaper did not provide independent proof that the vehicle could operate indefinitely under all conditions, and it acknowledged that independent scientific validation was still pending.

Can you buy an E-Cat Power generator for an EV?

There is no evidence in the supplied research that E-Cat Power is approved, mass-produced, or generally available for road vehicles. A May 2026 Leonardo update said generator preorders had been suspended while product specifications were revised, and said reliable self-sustain was then limited to industrial-scale megawatt thermoelectric facilities.

What are E-Cat or NGU Power Cells?

Leonardo describes NGU Power Cells as 12-volt, 10-watt units that can be wired in series and parallel into larger generators. That is the company’s technical description; it does not independently establish the cells’ performance or explain the claimed energy source.

What would be needed to verify the E-Cat EV claim?

A credible test would independently measure all electrical inputs and outputs, battery-terminal power, vehicle consumption, regenerative braking, auxiliary loads, and generator self-consumption. It would also require controlled access, documented materials, calibrated instruments, replication by unaffiliated laboratories, raw data, and peer-reviewed disclosure.
