The Ford 1.0L three-cylinder EcoBoost issue highlighted by a teardown is not a defect in every engine bearing that name. The central concern is a belt-driven oil-pump system: Ford says a tensioner can fracture or separate, or the belt can degrade and shed material, potentially reducing oil pressure. That can cause severe engine damage or seizure; Ford also warns of lost motive power and reduced power-braking assistance. Whether a particular car is covered depends on its VIN, build details, engine and transmission.
What the teardown shows—and what it does not prove
Ford Authority reported on a DriveTribe video showing a teardown of the 1.0L EcoBoost. The coverage draws attention to the engine’s belt-driven oil-pump system and the consequences of belt or tensioner failure. The teardown report is not itself a Ford recall notice, a survey of all 1.0L engines, or evidence that every three-cylinder EcoBoost has failed in the same way. Ford’s recall documents and service information establish the documented failure mechanism for specified vehicles.
The engine is also described in a technical reference as using a timing belt that runs immersed in engine oil. That is general mechanical context, not a fitment guide or a substitute for the service procedure for a particular engine. NTN-SNR’s 1.0L EcoBoost technical reference notes that belt-system replacement is a lengthy, involved job.
How a belt or tensioner problem can become an engine failure
Oil-pump drive belt and tensioner: Ford Recall 23S64
In its U.S. Safety Recall 23S64 supplement dated October 24, 2024, Ford identifies possible fracture or separation of the engine oil-pump drive-belt tensioner arm and/or degradation and shedding of oil-pump belt material. If the oil pump cannot maintain pressure, engine lubrication can become inadequate, causing damage or seizure and a loss of motive power. The pump is also associated with the mechanical vacuum pump that provides power-braking assistance; Ford says loss of that assistance can increase crash risk. Ford’s Recall 23S64 supplement describes the affected configurations and remedy.

Timing-belt debris: separate NHTSA investigation
A separate NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation engineering analysis, EA26004, concerns potential timing-belt degradation. Its summary describes belt material becoming debris that can restrict the oil-pump pickup screen, reduce oil pressure and, as debris accumulates, contribute to loss of motive power from insufficient lubrication. This is a distinct investigation, not a declaration that every related vehicle is recalled or that all 1.0L EcoBoost engines share the same defect. The investigation initially involved certain manual-transmission Fiesta and Focus vehicles; specified automatic-transmission EcoSport and Focus vehicles were analyzed as peer vehicles because of similar belt material. The EA26004 investigation summary provides the reported scope and findings.
What an oil-pressure warning means
Ford service communication SSM 49918 addresses certain 2016–2018 Focus and 2018–2019 EcoSport vehicles with a 1.0L EcoBoost and 6F15 automatic transmission, built on or before July 3, 2019. It says an illuminated oil-pressure warning and pressure loss may be caused by a failed oil-pump belt tensioner. Under its stated low-pressure and metal-contamination conditions, the communication calls for engine assembly and turbocharger replacement. This is diagnostic guidance for its listed population—not a consumer test or a repair instruction to apply to any Ford with an oil-pressure warning. Ford SSM 49918 sets out the bulletin’s scope.

Which vehicles may be covered by the U.S. recall?
Ford’s October 24, 2024 supplement states a U.S. affected population of 136,135 vehicles. Its affected-vehicle table lists certain 1.0L EcoBoost vehicles with automatic transmissions: EcoSport model years 2017–2022, Focus 2016–2018 and Fiesta 2017–2018. Ford’s subject line describes narrower year ranges for EcoSport and Fiesta, while the table and build-date ranges differ in presentation. The bulletin’s specified build dates and VIN eligibility—not a model name and year alone—determine whether a vehicle is included.
| Model | Model years in Ford’s affected-vehicle table | Ford bulletin build range | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| EcoSport | 2017–2022 | Chennai: April 3, 2017 through December 24, 2021 | Certain 1.0L EcoBoost vehicles with automatic transmission; confirm by VIN. |
| Focus | 2016–2018 | Michigan: March 24, 2015 through May 4, 2018 | Certain 1.0L EcoBoost vehicles with automatic transmission; confirm by VIN. |
| Fiesta | 2017–2018 | Niehl Cologne: April 10, 2017 through January 11, 2018 | Certain 1.0L EcoBoost vehicles with automatic transmission; confirm by VIN. |
Ford says affected vehicles are identified through its OASIS and Field Service Action VIN lists. A car falling within one of the table’s model-year ranges is not necessarily included. The U.S. population figure is Ford’s count in the 2024 supplement, not a count of all 1.0L EcoBoost vehicles.

Transport Canada describes a separate Canadian recall affecting only vehicles equipped with a 1.0L engine. Its remedy calls for dealer inspection and, if required, replacement of the oil-pump drive-belt tensioner assembly and oil-pump drive belt. Do not apply the U.S. campaign population or eligibility criteria to a Canadian vehicle; check the VIN with Ford or the relevant national recall authority. Transport Canada’s recall summary describes the Canadian campaign.

The EA26004 summary reports failure data supplied in response to the investigation. It says the average failure mileage was approximately 70,000 miles and that 98% of reported failures occurred before the then-listed 150,000-mile timing-belt replacement interval. Those figures describe the failure data summarized for the investigation, not the odds that any individual 1.0L EcoBoost will fail or a prediction for every vehicle on the road.

The summary also says Ford informed ODI on June 2, 2026 of a global customer-satisfaction program revising the 1.0L Fox Classic timing-belt interval from 150,000 miles to 100,000 miles or six years, and that eligible prior repairs might be reimbursed. The summary does not establish whether a particular vehicle qualifies or what terms currently apply; verify any program and reimbursement directly with Ford.
What to do if you own or are considering one
- Check the VIN. For a U.S. vehicle, ask Ford or a dealer to check the VIN against OASIS and applicable Field Service Actions. For a vehicle registered elsewhere, use the local Ford operation or national recall authority. Do not decide coverage from engine size, model year or transmission alone.
- If the oil-pressure warning illuminates, stop safely. An oil-pressure warning can indicate a serious lubrication problem. Avoid continuing to drive to see whether it clears; arrange professional diagnosis or recovery to a repair facility. Ford’s bulletin applies only to its specified vehicles and symptoms.
- Ask for the exact campaign and repair scope. Have the repairer confirm whether the vehicle is covered, which belt and tensioner parts are required, whether the parts are the applicable updated specification, and whether there is already oil-pressure loss, metal contamination or engine damage.
- Get repair and coverage terms in writing. Confirm what labor and components are included, whether an engine or turbocharger replacement is indicated under the applicable procedure, and what recall, warranty or customer-program coverage applies. Ford’s 2024 supplement described an interim long-block replacement for some engines already failed because of a broken oil-pump belt or tensioner, while anticipating improved belt and tensioner parts beginning in the first quarter of 2025. That historical bulletin does not establish present parts availability or an individual vehicle’s repair status.
Replacing a belt system is not a casual DIY job: the technical reference describes the work as lengthy, and the applicable parts and procedure need to be confirmed for the specific vehicle. A parts listing or kit name alone cannot establish fitment. Use Ford procedures or a qualified technician familiar with the exact engine, transmission and market.
