Is TSMC joining Terafab?
There is no confirmed TSMC-Terafab partnership. Musk’s statement confirms discussions, not an agreement, and the reporting available does not establish that TSMC has committed to invest in, own, operate, or supply technology for the project.
Tim Culpan’s October 3, 2026 report said TSMC was exploring ways to work with SpaceX’s Terafab project. Culpan described TSMC owning and operating a new factory as the likeliest scenario he had heard, while noting that alternatives were being considered and plans were not set in stone. Culpan’s report
Data Center Dynamics reported on October 5 that Terafab was associated with Grimes County, Texas, and described possible SpaceX equity and/or guaranteed purchase commitments if TSMC owned and operated a fab. Those are reported possibilities, not agreed terms. DCD also put the project cost at $16.8 billion; that figure is DCD’s reported project cost, not a confirmed TSMC investment or finalized commitment. Data Center Dynamics’ report

What might TSMC do for Terafab?
The proposed role is not clear. A TSMC-owned and -operated fab is one scenario in reporting, but the available accounts do not settle who would own the facility, fund it, run it, provide process technology, or buy its output.

Did Musk confirm a deal with TSMC?
No. Musk’s October 3 post said only that the companies were discussing the possibility. TSMC had not commented publicly as of Tom’s Hardware’s October 3 coverage, which characterized possible ownership structures as speculation. How does TSMC’s Arizona expansion fit in?
TSMC’s October 16, 2025 earnings-call transcript discusses its Arizona expansion and says overseas manufacturing decisions are guided by customer needs and geographic flexibility. That offers background on the company’s approach to manufacturing footprint decisions; it predates the Terafab reports and does not confirm TSMC participation. TSMC’s Q3 2025 earnings-call transcript
