Elon Musk’s reported comparison of Tesla’s HW3 and HW4 computers points to a real limit for older cars—but it does not mean every Tesla is unable to use today’s driver-assistance features. The key distinction is between FSD (Supervised), which still requires a driver, and the more ambitious promise of future autonomous driving. Tesla’s own materials say its supervised system does not make a car autonomous.
What Musk said about HW3 and HW4
A transcript of Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call, published by the secondary transcript provider Earnings.video, records Musk saying HW3 has “only one-eighth of the memory bandwidth” of HW4. He also discussed a discounted trade-in path involving cars equipped with AI4 hardware. The transcript does not establish final upgrade terms for all HW3 owners, or guarantee that any hardware change would enable unsupervised driving. Read the Q1 2026 earnings-call transcript.

That comparison is evidence of a substantial difference between the two computer generations, not an independent test of their overall performance or safety. The available sources do not provide an apples-to-apples benchmark that would show exactly how the bandwidth gap affects each feature or vehicle.

In its October 26, 2016 third-quarter update, Tesla said: “all newly produced Tesla vehicles have the hardware needed for full self-driving capability.” The company described eight surround cameras, 12 enhanced ultrasonic sensors, and computing power “increased by 40-fold over our previous generation hardware.” Those were Tesla’s claims about newly produced vehicles at the time—not an independent finding that the hardware would support every future version of autonomy. The tension is between that broad historical statement and the later acknowledgement that HW3 is materially behind HW4 on memory bandwidth. The comparison suggests that hardware judged sufficient for a future goal in 2016 may not be sufficient for every later ambition. It does not, by itself, establish that all HW3 cars have lost access to current supervised features.
What “Full Self-Driving” means for owners now
FSD (Supervised) is driver assistance
Tesla currently calls the product Full Self-Driving (Supervised). The company says it requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous. Tesla’s evidence dashboard classifies FSD (Supervised) as an SAE Level 2 advanced driver-assistance system. Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) support page and FSD (Supervised) evidence dashboard.

Unsupervised autonomy is a different claim
In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says no vehicle currently for sale is fully automated and drivers must remain fully attentive. That guidance is specific to vehicles available for sale in the U.S.; it should not be generalized to other jurisdictions. NHTSA’s automated-vehicle safety guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSo the phrase “Teslas don’t have what it takes for Full Self-Driving” is too broad if it means a Tesla cannot run any feature sold under that name. It is more defensible as a concern about whether older hardware can support Tesla’s future autonomy ambitions—and whether a particular car can receive particular features.

What HW3 owners can and cannot conclude
The transcript’s discussion does not settle what will happen to every HW3 vehicle. Tesla says FSD feature availability can vary with a vehicle’s configuration, hardware, software version, region, model, trim, and model year. A car’s current eligibility therefore needs to be checked against Tesla’s information for that specific vehicle, rather than inferred from the HW3/HW4 comparison alone.
- Current supervised features: the available sources do not establish that all HW3 cars have lost access to them.
- Future unsupervised driving: neither the transcript nor Tesla’s current feature description establishes that an HW3 car will achieve it.
- Hardware upgrade: the reported discounted trade-in discussion is not a confirmed offer with established eligibility, price, or timing for every HW3 owner.
What Tesla says about its next AI chips
Tesla’s January 28, 2026 investor update reported that it was developing AI5 and AI6 inference chips, with production planned for 2027 and 2028, respectively. Those are company plans, not completed production or a guarantee of schedule. The update does not establish which vehicles would use the chips or what an owner could upgrade to. - Low-Profile Camera Protection — Slim guard shields the rear camera from rain, dust, and road splash without blocking the view.
- Improved Weather Performance — Helps reduce water streaking and debris buildup on the lens for clearer rear vision.
- Precision Fit & Secure Mounting — Snug, stable installation that stays in place during normal driving and washing.
- Maintains Camera Functionality — Keeps the field of view intact so parking, reversing, and driver-assist features operate normally.
- Quick, Tool-Free Installation — Install or remove in minutes using included hardware or existing mounting points.
Bottom line for the headline
Musk’s reported HW3-versus-HW4 comparison reinforces that Tesla’s older and newer vehicle computers are not interchangeable in capability. But the headline should not be read as proof that no Tesla can perform today’s supervised FSD functions. Current FSD is still driver-supervised assistance; whether a specific older car can receive current or future features depends on its configuration and Tesla’s eventual decisions. No confirmed, universal HW3 upgrade or path to unsupervised autonomy is established by the cited statements.
