Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNeither an electric SUV nor a premium petrol SUV is automatically the better buy. Compare the specific vehicles over the same ownership period, then check whether charging, range, running costs, space, safety and ownership terms fit your life.
Start with your real driving and parking
Before comparing vehicles, write down how you use a car. An EV’s stated range by itself cannot tell you whether ownership will be convenient: the answer depends on your routes and where you can charge.

- List your regular journeys, their distances and where they start and end.
- Include the longest trips you expect to make, highway driving, and winter conditions if relevant to your area.
- Estimate your annual distance and how often you carry passengers or bulky cargo.
- Note whether you tow, and check the towing capacity and any related range implications for each exact vehicle.
- Record where the car will be parked overnight and during the day, and what charging is available there.
Decide what “electric” means on your shortlist. A battery-electric vehicle (BEV) runs on its battery and electric motor. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) can drive an electric-only distance that varies by design and battery; when its battery is depleted, its engine supports continued driving. A conventional hybrid is not a plug-in vehicle. NHTSA explains these distinctions in its guidance on electric and hybrid vehicles.

Home, apartment or strata parking
If you expect to charge at home, confirm that your parking space can support it before you choose a vehicle. Ask whether you have permission to install charging equipment, whether an owner, landlord or body corporate must approve it, whether the electrical supply is adequate, and what installation is likely to cost. Australian Government guidance specifically flags access and approval questions for apartment and strata residents.

In the U.S., the Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) gives a broad estimate of $500 to $4,000 for Level 2 home charging equipment before installation and incentives. That is an equipment estimate, not a quote for a complete installation; electrical work and local conditions affect the total. Check the connector and vehicle compatibility, electrical requirements and permitted installation before buying equipment.
Workplace and public charging
If home charging is not feasible, check whether workplace charging or nearby public chargers make the car practical for your routine. Look for chargers on routes you actually use, including longer journeys, and check which networks and connectors the vehicle can use in your region. Public charging costs and availability differ from home electricity, and vehicles and charging stations do not all charge at the same rate, NHTSA notes. AFDC describes U.S. Level 1, Level 2 and DC fast charging and provides a U.S. station locator; connector conventions and networks differ in other markets.

For regular longer journeys, compare the vehicle’s official range rating and charging rate with your route, then identify suitable charging stops. Do not treat a quoted range as a promise that every trip will work without a charging plan.
Compare what each vehicle will cost you
Set a realistic ownership period and annual distance, then use the same assumptions for both candidates. Compare total cost, not just the advertised price. Include the figures you can verify locally, and keep estimates—especially future resale assumptions—visible rather than treating them as certain.

The International Energy Agency’s Electric Vehicles Total Cost of Ownership Tool frames this kind of comparison around vehicle purchase and ongoing costs, financing, region, annual distance, vehicle type, energy prices and possible home-charger installation. Its page says it was last updated on 13 December 2022, so use it as a comparison framework rather than a source of current market prices. The U.S. DOE AFDC also offers a configurable Vehicle Cost Calculator. Use local, current prices for your own estimate.

- UK purchase prices: GOV.UK guidance updated 10 April 2025 describes the reported new-EV purchase-price premium over an equivalent internal-combustion vehicle as around 50% in 2020 and around 40% in 2023. This is a historical UK comparison, not a current or universal price gap.
- UK range: The same 2025 guidance cites Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders figures of nearly 300 miles for new EVs launched in 2023, compared with 210 miles in 2020. These are figures for those launch years, not a guarantee about a particular vehicle.
- UK running costs: GOV.UK reported around 8 pence per mile for home charging versus around 13 to 17 pence per mile for petrol or diesel as of January 2024. Household tariffs, vehicle efficiency and fuel prices affect an individual comparison.
- U.S. examples: AFDC lists the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid at 53 mpg, $26,590 MSRP and $1,100 annual fuel cost; the 2023 Niro Plug-In Hybrid at 48/108 MPGe, 34-mile electric range, $29,590 MSRP and $850 annual fuel cost; and the 2023 Niro Electric at 113 MPGe, 253-mile range, $39,550 MSRP and $650 annual fuel cost. These are sample 2023 U.S. figures, not current offers and not a comparison of premium petrol and electric SUVs.
None of these examples establishes your likely savings. Taxes, incentives, energy prices, efficiency, insurance, finance rates, resale and charging access vary by location and over time.

Check safety, warranty and service information
Safety and recalls
Look up independent crash-test ratings and open recalls for the exact model year and trim you might buy. The available evidence does not support a blanket claim that electric SUVs or premium petrol SUVs are safer overall. For charging and high-voltage safety, follow the vehicle’s manual and manufacturer instructions. NHTSA cautions that a high-voltage traction battery is different from a 12-volt battery and should not be serviced without training and specialized equipment.
Warranty and service access
Read the warranty document for the vehicle’s market, model and year. Check what is covered, what is excluded, how long coverage lasts, and whether your local service network can perform required work. Do not assume that similarly named vehicles have the same terms across markets.
Used vehicles
For any used SUV, consumer.gov recommends reviewing a vehicle history report, recall status and service records, taking a representative test drive, and arranging an independent inspection. For a used EV, also verify remaining battery-warranty coverage and whether it transfers to you; inspect the charging port and cable, confirm connector compatibility, and seek an inspection from a mechanic experienced with EVs when available. A vehicle’s warranty depends on its manufacturer, market, service history and specific terms.
