Porsche has confirmed an all-electric successor to the 718 Boxster and Cayman, with the company expecting the models to support sales in their first full production year in 2028. The petrol-powered 718 Boxster is no longer in production: Porsche says the Boxster/Cayman series ended in October 2025. But the electric car’s range, charging, performance, price and market-specific launch date have not been established in the official sources cited here, so a full specification-versus-specification comparison is not yet possible.
What is changing from the petrol 718 Boxster?
The central change is the powertrain. The 718 Boxster is an established petrol roadster; its planned successor belongs to an all-electric 718 Boxster and Cayman family. Porsche’s product strategy says the future two-door sports car in the 718 segment will be battery electric, while the company’s 2026 forecast puts the models’ first full production year of sales in 2028.

That establishes the direction of travel, not the electric car’s detailed specification. Porsche’s official material cited here does not establish its battery size, usable range, charging speed, acceleration, power output, weight, storage, price or ordering date. Specifications from other Porsche electric vehicles should not be used to fill those gaps.

When will the electric Porsche Boxster be available?
Porsche’s 2026 strategy announcement says the all-electric 718 Boxster and Cayman are expected to support sales in their first full production year in 2028. This is a company forecast, not a guaranteed retail on-sale date or order-opening date for every country. Regional timing and availability have not been established.

Porsche’s earlier 2025 product-strategy statement had already identified the future two-door sports car in the 718 segment as battery electric. The 2026 statement provides the latest timing cited here, but it still does not confirm when a buyer in a particular market can place an order or take delivery.
Is Porsche still making the petrol 718 Boxster?
No. Porsche’s 2025 annual report says production of the 718 Boxster/Cayman series was discontinued in October 2025. That means the petrol series is no longer being produced, but it does not mean every new example vanished from dealer inventory at the same time. Remaining new-car stock and used-car supply depend on market and dealer; check local listings for actual availability.

Porsche recorded 15,856 Boxster/Cayman vehicles produced and 18,612 delivered globally during 2025. These are combined series totals, not Boxster-only figures, and deliveries during that year do not show whether a specific dealer still has a car available.

Porsche describes the 718 Boxster as a roadster with a powered soft top, and its model information lists petrol variants including the Boxster GTS 4.0. Details vary by trim and model year, so figures for one version should not be applied to the whole range.

A dated example: the 2017 Boxster T
Porsche’s technical document for the 2017 718 Boxster T specifies a 1,988 cm³ four-cylinder engine producing 300 hp and 280 lb-ft, with rear-wheel drive. That variant had a six-speed manual transmission and offered an optional seven-speed PDK. These are specifications for the 2017 T, not a description of every petrol Boxster or later model-year lineup.
Transmission choice is also variant- and year-specific. The 2017 T document supports the manual and optional PDK details for that car only; it does not establish the transmission choices offered across all 718 Boxster trims.

What can drivers compare today?
For a purchase decision today, the confirmed comparison is between a known petrol model family and a planned electric successor with limited published technical detail. The powertrain change is confirmed, and the petrol series’ production status and the electric models’ broad timing are known. A detailed comparison of ownership or driving experience must wait for the electric car’s own specifications.

Until then, claims about those electric-model attributes would be speculation.
Quick Recap
What should a buyer do now?
- If you want a petrol 718: check local Porsche dealers for remaining new stock and consult used listings. Production ending does not establish that every market has sold through its inventory.
- If you are considering the electric successor: treat 2028 as Porsche’s expected first full production year for sales, not as a confirmed order or delivery date in your country.
- If driving specifications are decisive: wait for Porsche to publish the electric model’s own figures. Do not infer its range, charging, performance, size or price from other Porsche EVs.
