Eight well-documented examples show how hypercar records depend on more than a headline speed: the category, venue, measurement method and vehicle configuration all matter. Bugatti’s Veyron family and W16 Mistral feature high-speed and open-top claims; Koenigsegg’s CCR and CCX mark different kinds of milestones; and the Mercedes-AMG ONE’s achievement is a timed Nürburgring lap. The available record accounts support these eight cars, not a verified eleven-car lineup, so this article does not claim to reproduce one.
What each record claim actually measures
The figures below are not a single leaderboard. A top speed recorded under a particular test method, an open-top speed, a manufacturer’s production-car claim and a circuit lap measure different things. The claims are attributed to the manufacturers or media releases that reported them; they should not be read as independently adjudicated records across one uniform category.
| Car | Reported result and context | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Bugatti Veyron 16.4 | 407 km/h; type-approval figure following testing in both directions | Bugatti says TÜV Süd measured the result; its history account dates the car’s achievement to 2005. |
| Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport | 431.07 km/h; record run in June 2010 | Bugatti’s retrospective reports the result. |
| Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse | 408.84 km/h; open-top run at Ehra-Lessien in 2013 | Bugatti identifies this specifically as an open-top record. |
| Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ | 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h); 2019 run | Bugatti describes it as the first series-production manufacturer vehicle to exceed 300 mph. |
| Bugatti W16 Mistral World Record Car | 453.91 km/h; open-top run at Papenburg on November 9, 2024 | Bugatti calls it an open-top record and reported the result in its 2024 release. |
| Koenigsegg CCR | 388 km/h on the model page; 387.86 km/h in company history, at Nardò in February 2005 | Koenigsegg reports that the CCR took the Guinness production-car fastest record from the McLaren F1. Its two accounts round the speed differently. |
| Koenigsegg CCX | Top Gear test-track record in 2006; a separate 0–300–0 km/h time of 29.2 seconds in 2008 | Koenigsegg says the test-track result held against global series-production cars for seven years. This was a television test-track milestone, not a formal world record. |
| Mercedes-AMG ONE | 6:29.090 minutes over the 20.832-kilometre Nürburgring-Nordschleife on October 2, 2024 | Mercedes-Benz Media called it the production-vehicle record and said the lap was officially measured and notarised at the time of its release. |
How the engineering relates to the records
Bugatti Veyron 16.4: power that had to be controlled
Bugatti’s account describes an 8.0-litre W16 with four turbochargers, producing 1,001 PS and 1,250 Nm, coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive. The significance is not simply the output: the car also used active aerodynamics and a high-speed setup. From 220 km/h, Bugatti says its diffuser and spoiler configuration changed, and the car lowered for the high-speed setting. Those measures connect the powertrain to the stability demands of high-speed running.
Veyron Super Sport: upgrades to the high-speed package
For the Super Sport, Bugatti reports a 1,200 PS engine, four enhanced turbochargers, larger intercoolers and a redesigned chassis. The combination illustrates that increasing output for a speed attempt called for changes beyond the engine alone. Bugatti says the first five production Super Sports were designated World Record Editions.

Grand Sport Vitesse and W16 Mistral: open-top records are their own category
The Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse and W16 Mistral World Record Car are useful reminders not to merge open-top achievements into a general top-speed ranking. They are distinct cars and separate runs, with Bugatti explicitly describing each result as an open-top record. For the Mistral run, the company says changes included masking body-panel gaps, adjusting the suspension setup and removing the speed limiter. These details make the vehicle configuration part of the claim, not incidental fine print.
Chiron Super Sport 300+: a milestone with a carefully bounded description
Bugatti’s wording for the 2019 Chiron Super Sport 300+ run is specific: it calls the car the first series-production manufacturer vehicle to exceed 300 mph. That description should stay attached to the claim; it does not establish that every vehicle or production-car record category uses the same eligibility rules.

Koenigsegg CCR and CCX: different milestones, not interchangeable records
The CCR’s Nardò claim concerns a production-car fastest-speed record, and Koenigsegg’s own pages give two rounded versions of the result. The CCX story is different: its milestone was a Top Gear test-track time, while the 0–300–0 km/h figure is a separate acceleration-and-braking measure reported in the company history. Koenigsegg describes the CCX as a new car with a mid-mounted V8 and carbon-fiber tub, developed with worldwide homologation in mind. A test-track time, a top speed and a 0–300–0 time answer different performance questions.
Mercedes-AMG ONE: a timed lap built around hybrid and chassis systems
Mercedes-Benz Media describes the AMG ONE as using an F1-derived hybrid system with one combustion engine and four electric motors, delivering 782 kW (1,063 hp). The release also identifies a carbon monocoque and body, active aerodynamics and a pushrod chassis. Together, these systems frame its achievement as a circuit-lap result rather than a top-speed contest. Mercedes-Benz called the lap a production-vehicle record in its October 2, 2024 announcement; that dated claim does not establish the car’s standing in 2026.

How to compare hypercar records fairly
- Keep the category attached: a top-speed claim, open-top run, test-track time and Nürburgring lap are not interchangeable.
- Check the method and venue: for example, Bugatti says the Veyron’s type-approval speed was measured in both directions by TÜV Süd, while the AMG ONE result is a timed circuit lap on a specified track length.
- Keep configuration in view: roof status, chassis setup, aerodynamic changes and speed limiters can affect what a result represents.
- Preserve the source’s precision: Koenigsegg’s two CCR accounts round the same claimed result differently; displaying both avoids implying a precision the pages do not share.
- Date record-status language: an announcement that calls a result a record establishes what the source claimed at that time, not necessarily what remains the record later.
On that basis, these cars are best understood as a set of distinct engineering and performance milestones, not as eight directly comparable entries in one all-time ranking.
