Edmunds’ long-term Tesla Cybertruck displayed a “critical steering issue” warning and a low-voltage electrical-system alert during routine testing in July 2024. The truck lost functions and was limited to 4 mph before it started working again after about 30 minutes. Edmunds did not establish what caused the fault or report a later service diagnosis.
What happened to the Cybertruck?
On July 23, 2024, Edmunds published an account of an incident involving its own long-term Cybertruck during routine instrumented testing on a handling track. Edmunds said it owned the truck; Tesla had not provided it. The account was written by the outlet’s vehicle-testing team, not based on a customer complaint or a Tesla statement. Edmunds’ firsthand report describes the warning sequence and the truck’s temporary loss of functions.
During testing, Edmunds director of vehicle testing Jonathan Elfalan saw a “critical steering issue” warning. The truck’s power was reduced, and the air conditioning stopped blowing cold. Its center display also showed: “Low voltage electrical system issue detected / Vehicle power reduced — Schedule service.”
What warnings and restrictions did it show?
After the team parked the truck and waited, it would not shift into Drive. The display said the vehicle had detected a loss of redundancy and warned that, once out of Park, it could suddenly lose electrical power, steering and propulsion, and might be unable to apply the parking brake.

The screen suggested a power-cycle procedure: exit the vehicle, close all doors, re-enter, and try to drive. Edmunds said that procedure did not resolve the fault. After accepting an override for low-speed maneuvering, the team found that rear-axle steering was unavailable, the front running lights had turned off, and the truck would not travel faster than 4 mph.
How did the Cybertruck get moving again?
The team moved the truck to a parking lot and expected to call for roadside assistance. About 30 minutes later, it started, shifted into gear and drove away without an issue. Edmunds did not say what cleared the fault, whether anyone performed another reset, or whether the vehicle was later inspected or repaired.

What is known—and unknown—about the cause?
The report describes both a steering warning and a low-voltage electrical-system message, but it does not establish that one caused the other. It identifies no failed component, software version, repair, or subsequent service diagnosis. Edmunds said owners had reported similar issues, while noting that the cause was not clear; that is context from Edmunds, not a documented estimate of how often this occurs.
This was one incident involving Edmunds’ test truck in July 2024. It does not establish a failure rate or show the current condition of all Cybertrucks. Futurism summarized Edmunds’ account on July 27, 2024, but the firsthand report is the source for the event details. Futurism’s summary does not supply a confirmed diagnosis either.
