Use the charger specified for your e-bike’s battery, avoid routinely running the battery flat, and follow the battery maker’s own temperature and storage instructions. There is no single charge percentage or temperature rule that fits every e-bike: Bosch, Shimano, and Trek publish different long-storage targets, and those figures apply to their own systems. Good care can help avoid preventable battery stress, but the available manufacturer guidance does not quantify how many miles or years any one habit will add.
Start with the battery system’s own instructions
An e-bike battery is part of a specific electrical system. Its charger, operating limits, storage advice, and service requirements are set by the maker for that system; a charger that fits physically is not necessarily a suitable replacement. Before changing your routine or buying a spare, identify the battery and drive-system model and consult the manual for your exact bike and battery.

This matters most when recommendations seem to conflict. Bosch advises a 30–60% charge for longer storage, Shimano says approximately 70%, and Trek says about 50%. Those figures are not competing universal standards. Each is guidance for its own products, so do not average them or apply one maker’s target to another maker’s battery.
- Use the charger specified for your battery system, and verify exact compatibility before buying a replacement or spare.
- Follow the battery maker’s charging temperature limits and storage instructions rather than assuming a general lithium-ion rule applies.
- If your manual gives a different target or procedure from the examples below, follow the manual for your system.
How to charge an e-bike battery carefully
Use the correct charger and a suitable place
Bosch eBike Systems advises using the original Bosch charger. That is Bosch-specific advice, not evidence that one e-bike charger works with every battery. Check the exact battery and bike documentation before purchasing a charger. Do not choose one solely because its plug fits.

Bosch also recommends charging its battery in a dry area with a working smoke detector. Its guidance says to disconnect the charger and battery from power after charging. Follow the instructions for your own system for connecting, disconnecting, and charging; do not improvise a procedure from a different brand’s manual.
Partial charging and interrupted charging
For Bosch batteries, Bosch says, “The battery can be charged in any charge state,” and “Interrupting the charging process will not harm the battery.” These statements apply to Bosch systems. They do not establish a universal charging routine for every e-bike.
Shimano’s FAQ cautions that repeated charging when its battery indicator is between 100% and 80% can degrade Li-ion battery performance. That is a specific warning from Shimano, not a rule that every rider must stop charging at a fixed percentage each day. Use the directions for your system rather than trying to impose a daily cutoff based on another manufacturer’s advice.

Avoid making a fully discharged battery the norm
Bosch advises against regularly draining its battery to zero. Shimano says to charge a completely discharged battery as soon as possible, and warns: “Leaving the battery completely discharged may allow battery degradation to progress, making it impossible for the battery to be charged or discharged.” That warning is from Shimano’s FAQ and should not be treated as a description of every battery design.
A practical response is to recharge according to your maker’s instructions rather than deliberately riding until the battery is empty. If the battery has become completely discharged, consult its manual promptly for the correct next step; do not assume a long period left empty is harmless.
Storing a battery between rides or for a long break
For a short gap between rides, keep the battery in the conditions recommended by its maker. For a long break, check the prescribed storage charge and indoor temperature guidance before putting the battery away. Manufacturer examples differ:

These are attributed examples, not interchangeable targets. In particular, Shimano’s approximate 10–20°C storage guidance belongs with its stated storage recommendation; it is not a temperature range for all makes. Bosch’s 30–60% and Trek’s roughly 50% figures likewise apply to their own systems.

- Check the manual. Confirm the battery maker’s target charge, storage location, temperature guidance, and whether the battery should be removed from the bicycle.
- Prepare the battery to that system’s stated target. Do not substitute another manufacturer’s percentage when the battery’s own instructions are available.
- Choose the recommended indoor location. Keep the battery dry and observe any system-specific fire-safety advice, including Bosch’s direction to keep its battery away from combustible or flammable materials.
- Do not forget it for the whole storage period. Bosch notes that a battery gradually loses capacity even when unused. Shimano advises charging periodically during long storage. Follow your own maker’s maintenance interval rather than leaving the battery unattended indefinitely.
- Before riding again, follow the maker’s return-to-use instructions. Shimano advises charging before use after storage. Check the battery condition and the manual before reconnecting or riding if anything seems abnormal.
The storage question is not simply “What percentage is best?” It is “What does this battery’s manufacturer recommend for this storage period and environment?” That framing helps avoid turning one model’s useful target into a potentially unsuitable instruction for another.
Manage heat and cold without assuming one limit fits all
Charging temperature limits are system-specific
Bosch states that its battery permits charging between 0°C and 40°C. This is a Bosch limit, not a universal e-bike charging range. If your battery is colder or hotter than the range stated in its own documentation, do not assume that Bosch’s limit applies; check the maker’s instructions before charging.

Hot weather and parking
Bosch says high temperatures can damage its battery and advises parking the e-bike in shade or a cool room. Trek recommends indoor storage and warns that extreme temperatures can degrade battery life. These recommendations support avoiding prolonged exposure to extreme heat, but they do not specify a single safe parking temperature for every model.
Cold-weather use
For winter use, Bosch recommends charging and storing its battery at room temperature and fitting it to the e-bike immediately before riding, particularly when the temperature is below 0°C. This is Bosch’s advice for its own system. Follow your battery maker’s winter instructions if you ride in cold conditions, especially where the manual sets a specific operating or charging limit.
Temperature can affect battery performance or usable time, and care can influence service life. Bosch summarizes the broader point this way: “The service life of lithium-ion batteries depends on many different factors, such as charging cycles and storage.” The cited manufacturer guidance does not quantify a particular distance or lifespan gain from parking in shade, charging at a certain percentage, or using any other single habit.

Safety, warning signs, and when to get service
Build safe charging and storage into the routine
Follow the maker’s directions for charging and storage, including Bosch’s advice to charge in a dry area with a working smoke detector and to store its battery away from combustible or flammable materials. Do not treat the presence of built-in battery protections as a reason to ignore the instructions.
UK statutory guidance says e-bike lithium-ion batteries should have safety mechanisms capable of preventing thermal runaway during normal operation and reasonably foreseeable misuse. The described protections include safeguards against over- or under-voltage, over-current, and over- or under-temperature. This is a statement about product safety mechanisms in that regulatory context, not a guarantee that every battery is risk-free.
Use qualified service for battery-system problems
If the battery or drive system needs service, Trek advises taking the e-bike to a qualified local bike shop with mechanics skilled and certified in that drive system. System-specific diagnosis and service are a better route than attempting an internal battery repair based on general online advice. Use the manufacturer’s support or a suitably qualified service provider for questions about a fault, damage, or a replacement part.
A quick routine to preserve battery health
- Before charging: Confirm that you are using the charger specified for the exact battery system, and check the permitted charging conditions in its manual.
- While charging: Use the maker’s recommended location and procedure. Bosch owners should use the original Bosch charger, charge in a dry area with a working smoke detector, and disconnect the charger and battery from power after charging.
- During normal riding: Avoid routinely running the battery fully flat. Recharge a completely discharged battery promptly in line with its maker’s directions.
- Before a long break: Check the battery’s own storage charge and location recommendations. Do not borrow a percentage from another manufacturer’s guidance.
- During storage: Keep the battery indoors in the conditions its maker specifies, and follow any instruction to charge periodically. Remember that unused batteries still gradually lose capacity.
- When seasons change: Review the system’s temperature limits and cold-weather advice before charging or riding in unusually hot or cold conditions.
- When something is wrong: Seek qualified, system-specific service instead of attempting an internal battery repair.
These habits are practical ways to follow manufacturer guidance and avoid preventable misuse. They should not be read as a promise of a particular range, number of charging cycles, or service life: the cited manufacturer sources do not provide a quantified benefit for any single care habit.
