Ducati unveiled the Desmo450 MX on April 3, 2025, marking its first entry into motocross. The bike pairs a 449.6 cc Desmodromic single-cylinder engine with an aluminum perimeter frame and electronic traction control that Ducati says responds to actual rear-wheel slip. The published figures and performance claims below are Ducati’s specifications, not independent test results.
What is the Ducati Desmo450 MX?
The Desmo450 MX is Ducati’s first motocross motorcycle, developed for competition and off-road riding. Its defining engine feature is Desmodromic valve timing: rather than relying on springs alone to close the valves, the system mechanically controls their opening and closing. Ducati presented the bike on April 3, 2025, as an expansion into specialist off-road motorcycles.
Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali described the move as an opportunity to reach a new segment of enthusiasts, and said the company intended to develop the motorcycle through high-level racing. Those are the manufacturer’s stated rationale and plans, not evidence of independent market demand or comparative performance.
What are the Desmo450 MX’s engine and chassis specifications?
Ducati’s launch specifications for the standard Desmo450 MX list a 449.6 cc single-cylinder engine producing 63.5 hp at 9,400 rpm and 39.5 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm. Ducati also says the engine produces 70% of its maximum torque at 4,200 rpm. The listed rev limiter is 11,900 rpm.

Ducati lists ready-to-use weight without fuel at 231 lb, a 1.9 U.S.-gallon fuel tank and a 19.7 lb frame. These are manufacturer figures; they are not independent measurements.
Frame and suspension
The chassis uses an aluminum perimeter frame. Ducati describes its structure as an 11-piece design intended to minimize welds. Standard-model running gear in the launch specification includes:
Rank #2
- Charge Up the Trails: Hit speeds up to 14 mph and feel the rush on a high-torque, chain-driven electric motocross bike built for gentle hills, dirt paths, and backyard adventures
- Tough Enough for Kids: Steel frame with authentic dirt bike geometry, double-crown fork, and shatter-resistant plastic fairings stand up to grassy hills, playground slopes, and playful terrain
- Comfort in Command: Soft rubber grips, adjustable-angle riser-style handlebars, twist-grip throttle, and rear brake give you control, comfort, and confidence every ride
- For the Long Haul: Up to 30 minutes of continuous run time on high speed, supports up to 140 pounds, ages 8+ years old, with 12-inch pneumatic knobby tires for serious grip
- Safety in the Fast Lane: Hand-operated brakes, folding metal foot pegs, and a retractable kickstand keep your ride both thrilling and secure, just the way a Dirt Rocket ride should be
- Fully adjustable 49 mm Showa inverted front forks with 310 mm of travel.
- A fully adjustable Showa monoshock, with 301 mm of rear-wheel travel.
- Brembo calipers and Galfer discs measuring 260 mm at the front and 240 mm at the rear.
Electronics and controls
The listed electronics include traction control, launch control and engine-brake control, alongside two riding modes and a quickshifter. Ducati says the traction-control system measures actual rear-wheel slip and can recognize situations in which it should not intervene. The company calls it the first motocross bike with this type of traction control; that distinction is Ducati’s claim, not an independently established comparison.
Ducati also lists X-Link app configuration. The launch materials do not establish that the electronics or app settings make the bike easier or faster to ride for every rider.
Rank #3
- TURNS A PLAIN BACKYARD INTO A TRACK with real trail speed up to 23 MPH from the 49cc 2 stroke gas engine, whose immediate throttle response gives teens a reason to trade screen time for outside time.
- RIDES LONGER BETWEEN STOPS thanks to a 1.5 L fuel tank covering up to 18 miles per fill, so an afternoon at the dirt path does not end after two short laps.
- FLOATS OVER ROUGH GROUND with an inverted front fork up front and a shock absorber in the rear that smooth out ruts, roots, and small bumps for a steadier, more confident ride.
- STEEL FRAME WITH 2.50-10 FOUR PLY TIRES carries riders up to 132 lbs while the whole bike weighs about 50.7 lbs, easy for one adult to load for a weekend away and tough enough for season after season.
- SIMPLE TO LIVE WITH: pull start means no battery upkeep, the engine runs on a gas and 2 stroke oil premix, and a recommended 36 psi cold tire pressure keeps the rubber rolling true ride after ride.
How does the Desmo450 MX compare with other 450 motocross bikes?
Ducati’s stated technical distinctions are its Desmodromic single-cylinder engine and slip-aware traction control, together with the aluminum perimeter-frame design. The available manufacturer announcements do not provide independent head-to-head testing, lap times or comparative measurements against other 450 motocross motorcycles. It is therefore possible to describe what Ducati says is distinctive, but not to conclude from these specifications alone that the Desmo450 MX is faster, easier to ride or more reliable than a rival.
When did the Desmo450 MX come out, and what did it cost?
Ducati announced selected European dealer arrivals from June 2025 and a North American rollout in July 2025. In an August 6, 2025 North American update, Ducati said bikes were arriving at U.S. dealerships, reported full AMA homologation in early July, and gave an initial U.S. price of $11,495 for the standard model. These are historical launch details, not confirmation of current inventory or pricing. Check a Ducati dealer in your market for present availability and price.
