Choose based on whether your plans call for flexible point-to-point travel and whether public transit or organized transport serves your destinations. If you rent, reserve ahead, learn the key driving and parking rules, and check traffic and roadwork close to departure.
Do I need a rental car on Oahu?
Not necessarily. Go Hawaiʻi lists rental cars, shuttles, taxis, TheBus, trolley service, and bus tours as ways to get around Oahu. It recommends reserving in advance if you plan to rent. Go Hawaiʻi’s Oahu travel information describes these options, but current routes, schedules, fares, and availability should be checked directly before you travel.
Decide by looking at your itinerary rather than assuming a car is essential:
- Destinations: Check whether TheBus, a shuttle, taxi, trolley, or tour serves the places you plan to visit.
- Flexibility: Consider how much you value choosing when to leave and making point-to-point trips.
- Logistics: Factor in parking and the need to monitor traffic and road closures if you drive.
The available information does not establish a current cost comparison among these options, so check current prices and service details before choosing.

What should I know before driving on Oahu?
Adjust your speed to conditions
Hawaiʻi’s Driver’s Manual says to drive at a reasonable and prudent speed for the actual conditions, including the road, traffic, pedestrians, weather, and light. Posted maximum speed limits still apply; there is no single island-wide limit that applies to every road. The manual states: “You must drive at a safe appropriate speed depending on the area in which you are driving, the type and condition of the road traffic, the presence of pedestrians, the weather, and light conditions.” Read the Hawaiʻi Driver’s Manual for the full guidance; its landing page says it was updated Aug. 14, 2024.
If you cannot keep up with traffic, the manual advises pulling off to let others pass or choosing another route. On multilane roads, slower drivers should keep to the right-hand lane.
Buckle up and use the right child restraint
Hawaiʻi requires seat belts for occupants in both front and back seats. The state’s visitor guidance says children under 4 must ride in a federally approved child safety seat. Children ages 4 through 7 must use a car seat or booster, subject to stated exceptions: a child taller than 4 feet 9 inches, or a child riding in a rear seat equipped only with lap belts. Check current state guidance and applicable law for the full requirements before travel.
Set up navigation before moving
Hawaiʻi’s visitor portal warns that electronic-device use while driving may be subject to fines. Enter your destination and prepare navigation before you start driving, then follow applicable law. The guidance does not establish that a particular phone mount or voice setting makes every use lawful. See the state’s Getting Around page.
How do I check traffic and road closures?
Roadwork and incidents can affect a planned drive, so check close to departure and again on the day you travel. The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation publishes planned construction and maintenance closures for state roads weekly, on Fridays, and provides an HDOT lane-closure map. The state also directs drivers to GoAkamai for live traffic information on Oahu’s major roads. These are time-sensitive resources; a listed closure should not be treated as permanent without current confirmation.
Where can I park, and how should I secure the car?
Follow posted signs and local instructions at each destination. Hawaiʻi’s Driver’s Manual lists prohibited parking situations that include:
Rank #4
- On a sidewalk, in a signed no-parking area, or in a tow-away zone.
- Where the vehicle creates a traffic hazard, blocks a driveway, interferes with an intersection, or obstructs visibility near a crosswalk.
- Near a fire hydrant, on a bridge or in a tunnel, in a loading zone, or double-parked.
- More than 12 inches from the curb, or where fewer than 10 feet remain for traffic.
Rules and restrictions can be specific to a location, so do not assume a general rule establishes where you may park at a particular beach, trail, or neighborhood. Check signs and managing-agency guidance. The manual is available as the Hawaiʻi Driver’s Manual.
Honolulu Police Department visitor guidance advises locking vehicle doors and keeping bags and packages out of sight. It also cautions against putting items in the trunk while others are watching. Secure valuables before you reach a stop, rather than making them visible while parked. See the department’s visitor information.

How can I make the choice work for my itinerary?
- List the places you plan to visit. Check whether public transit, shuttles, taxis, trolley service, or tours serve them.
- Decide how much flexibility you need. If you rent, reserve ahead and plan for parking and traffic checks.
- Before each drive, review current traffic and lane-closure information, set up navigation, and make sure everyone is properly restrained.
- At each stop, obey signs and local parking directions, and secure belongings out of view.
For a general look at speed and road-use rules, use the state driver’s manual. It is general visitor guidance, not a substitute for current law, posted signs, or live traffic information.
