Yes—if the specific used CX-5 is priced fairly and suits your needs. The U.S.-market 2024 Mazda CX-5 still offers standard all-wheel drive, a choice of naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines, and a model-year-specific IIHS Top Safety Pick award. But it is now the outgoing generation: Mazda redesigned the CX-5 for 2026, whose separate Top Safety Pick+ rating does not apply to the 2024. Treat the 2024 as a used-car candidate to judge by its price, mileage, condition, service history, trim, and equipment—not by its original sticker price or the newer model’s safety results.
What the 2024 CX-5 offers
Mazda North American Operations announced the U.S. 2024 lineup on August 1, 2023. Every trim retained i-Activ all-wheel drive and used a six-speed automatic transmission. The lineup included eight trims: 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Carbon Edition, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Carbon Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Premium, and 2.5 Turbo Signature. Mazda’s 2024 CX-5 pricing and packaging announcement is the source for these model-year specifications.
2.5 S: naturally aspirated
Mazda rated the 2.5-liter four-cylinder in 2.5 S models at up to 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. Its EPA estimates were 26 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined, and Mazda said it could use regular 87-octane or premium 93-octane gasoline. These are Mazda-published model-year figures, not independent road-test results.
Turbo trims: more output, fuel-dependent ratings
Mazda quoted 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque for the 2.5-liter turbo on premium 93-octane fuel. On regular 87-octane fuel, the stated output was 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. Those figures apply to the turbocharged version; do not assume that every trim has the same power or fuel economy.

Equipment and trim matter
Mazda listed features including Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Smart Brake Support, Advanced Smart City Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist. The announcement also described a 10.25-inch center display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Check the equipment on the individual vehicle: availability and standard fitment can vary by trim and option.
How safe is the 2024 CX-5?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) lists the 2024 CX-5 as a Top Safety Pick. Its page records Good ratings in the small overlap front, original and updated moderate overlap front, and updated side tests. That award is useful context, but it does not mean every tested or included system earned a top rating. See the IIHS 2024 CX-5 ratings and equipment details.
IIHS rates the 2024’s standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention Poor. It also lists headlights as varying by trim or option, LATCH ease of use as Acceptable, standard blind-spot detection and lane-departure warning/prevention, and optional rear automatic braking. When comparing two used examples, check their actual safety equipment and headlights rather than relying on the award name alone.

The clearest dividing line in the available model-year information is the 2026 redesign. IIHS lists the redesigned 2026 CX-5 separately and gives it a Top Safety Pick+ rating; Mazda announced that award on July 30, 2026. Those results apply to the 2026 vehicle, not the 2024. There were also changes before the redesign. Mazda’s 2025 U.S. announcement described the return of a 2.5 S entry trim and dual front USB-C ports as standard on more models. For 2025 2.5 S models with available cylinder deactivation and i-stop, Mazda gave estimates of up to 26 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined. The changes illustrate why a buyer should verify the exact year and trim rather than assume neighboring CX-5s have identical packaging or ratings. The 2024 may be a fit for someone who prefers its particular trim, cabin controls, or asking price, but the available facts do not establish that it is better to drive or laid out better than the redesigned 2026. Inspect the cabin and controls yourself, and compare current listings and condition before deciding.

What to check before buying a used 2024 CX-5
- Compare the asking price locally. Mazda’s 2023 launch MSRPs—$29,300 for the 2.5 S Select through $40,600 for the Turbo Signature, before destination and other fees—are historical new-car prices, not current used-car valuations. Compare vehicles with similar year, trim, mileage, condition, and equipment in your market.
- Confirm the trim and installed equipment. Check the vehicle’s exact trim and options, including the driver-assistance features, display and phone connectivity you expect.
- Match the powertrain to your priorities. The 2.5 S and turbo models differ in output and fuel requirements. Consider your fuel preference and likely use rather than treating the turbo’s premium-fuel rating as its output on regular fuel.
- Review condition and service history. Have the individual vehicle assessed and review its maintenance records. The model-year specifications and safety ratings do not establish the history or condition of a particular used car.
- Compare the year-specific safety information. Use the 2024 IIHS page for a 2024 vehicle; do not substitute the redesigned 2026 model’s award or ratings.
Who should consider it?
- It may make sense if you want standard AWD, find a well-maintained example at a compelling local price, and prefer one of its available trims or powertrains.
- Look closely at newer alternatives if newer-model equipment or the redesigned cabin is central to your choice. Verify each car’s exact trim and safety information.
- Keep shopping if the asking price, condition, service records, or equipment do not compare favorably with other cars available to you. The model’s original MSRP alone cannot establish value today.
