Donut Lab says its 21-inch automotive in-wheel motor produces 630 kW—about 845 mechanical horsepower—per motor, with a stated mass of 40 kg (88 lb) and torque of 4,300 Nm. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independently validated vehicle-test results.
What the 845-hp figure describes
The figure applies to Donut Lab’s largest announced automotive motor, a 21-inch unit mounted at the wheel. The company lists 630 kW and 4,300 Nm per motor at 40 kg (88 lb); 630 kW converts to approximately 845 mechanical horsepower. “Per motor” matters. Multiplying the specification by four would produce a theoretical sum, not a validated output figure for a particular four-motor vehicle. The cited sources do not establish a production car using this 21-inch motor or provide independent vehicle testing of its output.
How it fits into Donut Lab’s motor family
Donut Lab’s 2025 announcement describes motors for several vehicle formats. The figures below are the company’s stated specifications, not independent test results. The current product page additionally lists a truck-oriented configuration.

The 2025 announcement supplies the first four configurations; the truck-oriented specification appears on the company’s current, undated motor product page. These figures should not be treated as directly comparable vehicle performance: the sources do not establish a common peak-versus-continuous rating basis or a like-for-like vehicle setup.
What production use is documented
Donut Lab says its 17-inch Open motor has been in continuous production use with Verge Motorcycles, with customer deliveries underway since early 2023. That is a company-stated production example for the motorcycle motor; it does not establish production use of the 21-inch, 630 kW automotive unit.

Why putting the motor at the wheel matters
An in-wheel, direct-drive layout puts propulsion at the wheel. Donut Lab says this can remove traditional power-transmission components. The trade-off to examine is unsprung mass: components at the wheel move with it over bumps, which can affect suspension response and handling. The company argues its power and torque density make the mass insignificant, but the cited pages do not provide independent vehicle tests establishing that claim.
In a Jan. 9, 2025, report, Motor Authority quoted Donut Lab CEO Marko Lehtimäki: “Great unsprung mass has been the most important reason why everyone hasn’t used motors integrated with the tire in their vehicles.” The quote identifies a longstanding engineering concern; it is not itself evidence that this motor resolves it in a vehicle.

What the published numbers do—and do not—establish
The 845-hp headline is a conversion of Donut Lab’s 630 kW per-motor figure. The company also states 4,300 Nm and 40 kg for the 21-inch motor. The cited material does not supply independent validation of its output, durability, ride quality, or handling in a vehicle. Comparisons with other motors therefore need more than a headline power figure: rating basis, mass accounting, packaging, drivetrain parts removed, and vehicle-level behavior all matter.
