There is no published measurement in the reviewed sources showing that Cybertruck steering has significant input-to-wheel lag. Tesla describes the truck’s steer-by-wire design, and it documented a limited steering-performance issue on certain 2024 vehicles that could require extra effort—but that is not evidence of delayed response.
How Cybertruck steering works
Tesla says Cybertruck replaces a traditional steering shaft with redundant electronic controllers and motors. The owner-manual text explains that sensors at the steering column communicate electronically with the steering racks, so there is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and road wheels. Tesla also describes rear-wheel steering. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent performance measurements. Tesla’s Q4 and FY 2024 Update says steer-by-wire enables an adjustable ratio for different speeds and driving styles, with the aim of reducing steering-wheel rotation and balancing low-speed agility with high-speed stability. It specifies approximately ten degrees of rear-wheel steering; that figure describes the design, not response time. Tesla Cybertruck Owner’s Manual
What Tesla documented about a steering problem
Tesla service bulletin SB-24-32-003, dated February 1, 2024, covers certain 2024 Cybertrucks built in the United States. It says that, in rare circumstances, steering performance may degrade and require additional effort. The correction is replacement of the front steering actuator. Tesla labels the condition non-safety-related. The bulletin does not describe general steering delay or say that all Cybertrucks are affected. Lag, heavy steering and notchy feel are different symptoms
- Perceived lag: the driver turns the steering wheel and feels that the road wheels respond later. The reviewed sources provide no measured Cybertruck input-to-wheel latency or controlled test establishing that this delay is significant.
- Extra steering effort: Tesla’s Cybertruck bulletin describes a rare degradation condition that may require more effort. It does not identify that condition as delayed response.
- Notchy steering: Tesla bulletin SB-24-32-001 concerns certain Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in cold temperatures, not Cybertruck. It directs applicable vehicles to software version 2023.38 or later. Tesla service bulletin SB-24-32-001
The Associated Press reported on February 2, 2024, that NHTSA had upgraded an investigation into steering complaints involving Model 3 and Model Y vehicles; its account also discussed a separate recall whose scope included the 2024 Cybertruck. It did not report that NHTSA had found significant Cybertruck steering lag. Those matters should not be conflated with the Cybertruck actuator campaign or individual drivers’ impressions. What would establish whether the response is slow?
A useful comparison needs measured timing from steering input to front- and rear-wheel response, plus steering-wheel angle versus road-wheel angle. It should test repeatability at different speeds and in comparable maneuvers, and report the model year, software version, tires and wheels, temperature, speed, measurement equipment and sample count. The sources cited here do not provide such a test, so online impressions or video frames alone cannot establish a latency figure.

What Cybertruck owners should do
- Check the vehicle’s Tesla account or contact Tesla service to determine whether a campaign applies to the truck’s VIN.
- Arrange professional service for abnormal steering behavior, including a change in effort or response. Tesla’s bulletin specifies front steering actuator replacement for vehicles covered by that campaign.
