No. Tesla’s current feature name is Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and Tesla says it requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous. The person behind the wheel must stay attentive and ready to take control. The word “Supervised” is essential: this is a driver-assistance feature, not permission to stop paying attention.

The name can make it easy to mistake what the feature does. The practical question is not whether the car can perform some driving tasks, but whether the human can stop monitoring it. Tesla’s answer is no: the driver remains responsible. This guide explains what the name means, what drivers should check, how to understand safety claims, and what California regulators said about earlier terminology.

What does Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) do?

Tesla describes Full Self-Driving (Supervised), often shortened to FSD (Supervised), as a suite of advanced driver-assistance features that can drive the vehicle under the driver’s supervision. Its capabilities may change through over-the-air software updates, and the features available depend on the vehicle and market. Tesla’s description does not make the car autonomous: the driver remains responsible for supervising its operation.

That distinction matters. A system may perform driving tasks while still requiring a person to monitor what is happening and act when needed. “Can drive the vehicle under supervision” does not mean the vehicle can handle every situation independently, nor does it mean the driver can transfer responsibility to the software. Tesla’s own support documentation puts the point plainly: “FSD (Supervised) requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous.”

For the current feature description and availability, see Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving support page. Because features can vary by model, software and market, check the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle rather than assuming every Tesla has the same functions. The feature name is not a complete specification: the vehicle and region determine what is offered, and updates can change capabilities.

Do you have to pay attention when FSD is on?

Yes. Tesla says FSD (Supervised) requires active driver supervision. The driver must keep attention on the road and be prepared to intervene; engaging the feature does not transfer responsibility for safe driving to the vehicle. Do not treat an active system as a reason to mentally check out. The ability to respond is part of the supervision requirement, not an optional backup.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states: “Every vehicle currently for sale in the United States requires the full attention of the driver at all times for safe operation.” That is a U.S.-specific statement from the federal vehicle-safety agency, and it reinforces the distinction between driver assistance and autonomous operation. See NHTSA’s automated-vehicle safety guidance.

In practical terms, the driver should be in a position to notice when the vehicle’s behavior does not match expectations and take over. A driver who is not watching cannot reliably supervise. That remains true even if the feature has been operating smoothly or has received an over-the-air update; neither circumstance changes Tesla’s stated requirement for active supervision.

Can you sleep, use your phone or look away while it drives?

No. Sleeping or turning your attention away is incompatible with the active supervision Tesla requires. Do not treat FSD (Supervised) as a hands-off or eyes-off ride, and do not use it as permission to text, browse or perform another distracting task. The driver needs to be able to recognize when the system is not handling a situation as expected and respond.

“The car is moving” and “the car is autonomous” are not interchangeable descriptions. The feature can assist with driving, but Tesla says the vehicle is not autonomous when using it. A successful stretch of operation does not demonstrate that it will handle the next situation without help. If you cannot remain attentive and ready to intervene, you should not rely on the feature as a substitute for a driver.

What happens if the system does not work as expected?

FSD (Supervised) has limitations. Tesla’s Model 3 owner manual tells drivers to learn those limitations and the situations in which the system may not work as expected. It also describes escalating driver-attention warnings and says access to Autosteer and FSD can be suspended in some circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those points are reasons to understand the system before relying on it, rather than assuming that the feature will always behave in the same way. The manual is not just a list of controls: it is the model-specific place to learn what the system is designed to do, where its limitations are described, and what the vehicle may do when driver attention is lacking. The cited warning and suspension descriptions are from the Model 3 manual; they should not be assumed to describe every Tesla model identically.

The specific warnings, behavior and feature availability may depend on the vehicle and region. Consult the owner’s manual for your own model and market; Tesla provides vehicle manuals through its owner’s manual page. A useful check is to match the manual to the actual vehicle and market, read the relevant descriptions of the driver-assistance feature and its limitations, and revisit the manual if the software or available features change. Do not assume that a warning sequence or feature described for one model applies identically to another.

Is FSD (Supervised) the same on every Tesla?

No single feature description should be taken as a guarantee that every Tesla has the same capabilities. Tesla says the feature set depends on the vehicle and market, and that capabilities can change through over-the-air updates. A driver considering what a particular car can do needs to check the support information and owner’s manual for that vehicle rather than extrapolating from another Tesla, a different software version, or a description written for a different region.

That variability is also why broad statements about the system should be qualified. The stable takeaway in Tesla’s current terminology is that the feature is supervised and does not make the vehicle autonomous. Details of availability and behavior are more specific, and readers should verify them in the current Tesla support page and their own vehicle’s manual.

Why does the name cause confusion?

“Full Self-Driving” sounds like a promise that a vehicle can drive without a human supervising it. Tesla’s current name adds “(Supervised),” and Tesla explicitly says the feature does not make the vehicle autonomous. That qualification changes the practical meaning: the driver remains engaged and responsible. When discussing the feature, including “(Supervised)” helps avoid repeating the unqualified marketing phrase in a way that could imply autonomy.

NHTSA avoids using “self-driving” to describe higher levels of vehicle automation because the phrase can inaccurately suggest that drivers need not interact with the vehicle. A feature name is not a substitute for understanding its operating limits and the driver’s obligations. In other words, a product label does not answer the safety question by itself; the operating description and driver-supervision requirement do.

If you are comparing driver-assistance features, compare like with like rather than relying on labels. Relevant questions include whether the driver must supervise continuously; where and under what conditions the feature is designed to operate; what driver-monitoring and intervention mechanisms are described; which vehicle, software version and geography are covered; and how safety outcomes are measured and normalized. The available evidence here does not support ranking Tesla against competitors, so a simple “best” or “safest” conclusion would go beyond what these sources establish.

What did California regulators say about Tesla’s terminology?

The California Department of Motor Vehicles reported that it found Tesla violated state law through misleading use of “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving Capability” in marketing. The agency later said Tesla took corrective action to avoid a suspension, including specifying driver supervision in its terminology. These are California agency findings and updates; they should not be presented as a legal ruling applying to every state or country. The DMV’s statements are available in its news and media updates.

The careful way to describe this history is to identify the agency and the geography every time: California’s DMV reported its findings and later reported corrective action. Do not turn that account into a claim that a court or regulator in every jurisdiction reached the same conclusion, or that one state’s action establishes a universal legal status for the feature. The broader reader takeaway is narrower: the terminology has attracted regulatory scrutiny, and Tesla’s current qualification emphasizes that driver supervision is required.

Do Tesla’s safety figures prove FSD is safer than driving yourself?

No broad comparative conclusion follows from Tesla’s own safety reporting alone. Tesla’s safety-report page presents manufacturer-reported comparisons and describes limitations in its reporting. The company says it does not attribute fault in its collision reporting because fault assessment is subjective and complex. Figures from that page should therefore be identified as Tesla-reported, with the report period, comparison definitions and relevant exposure limitations—not treated as independent testing or a universal crash-rate comparison.

A meaningful comparison needs more than a headline number. Readers need to know what period is covered, what groups or driving conditions are being compared, how exposure is measured, and what the report counts. Without those details, a number cannot answer the general question “Is FSD safer?” by itself. The reviewed sources do not establish an independently comparable figure showing that FSD (Supervised) is safer than manual driving in general, so it would be misleading to present Tesla’s own figures as settling that question.

For example, Tesla reported 2.5 billion telemetry packages in Q3 2025, excluding China. That is a telemetry-volume figure, not a count of safety events and not proof that FSD is safer than manual driving. See Tesla’s Vehicle Safety Report for the company’s own reporting and its stated limitations. If citing any Tesla-reported figure, preserve its attribution, reporting period, comparison definitions and exclusions; do not recast manufacturer telemetry as independent research.

What should a Tesla driver remember?

  • The current feature name is Full Self-Driving (Supervised); supervision is part of the name and the operating expectation.
  • Tesla says the feature does not make the vehicle autonomous.
  • The driver must stay attentive, monitor the vehicle and be ready to intervene.
  • Capabilities and behavior can vary with vehicle, software and market; consult the correct owner’s manual.

  • Manufacturer-reported safety figures are not, by themselves, independent proof of comparative safety.
  • California’s regulatory history should be described as California-specific, not generalized to all jurisdictions.

Does every Tesla have the same FSD features?

No. Tesla says available features depend on vehicle and market, and capabilities can change through over-the-air updates. Check the current support page and the manual for your exact model and region.

Does Tesla’s safety report prove FSD is safer than manual driving?

Not by itself. Tesla’s figures are manufacturer-reported and need context about period, comparison definitions, exposure and reporting limitations. The reviewed evidence does not establish a general independent comparison showing FSD is safer than manual driving.

What did California say about Tesla’s Full Self-Driving name?

California’s DMV reported that it found Tesla violated state law through misleading use of “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving Capability” in marketing, then later said Tesla took corrective action to avoid a suspension. This is California-specific agency history, not a blanket conclusion for every jurisdiction.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is driver assistance, not autonomous driving. Stay attentive and ready to take over, learn the limitations for your exact vehicle and market, and treat Tesla’s safety figures as manufacturer-reported evidence rather than independent proof of a broad safety comparison.
