The Dodge Viper has five commonly recognized generations: 1992–1995, 1996–2002, 2003–2006, 2008–2010, and 2013–2017. The last generation debuted as the SRT Viper for 2013, then carried the Dodge Viper name from 2015 through its final model year, 2017. The timeline includes gaps: there was no 2007 model year, nor a Viper for 2011 or 2012.
Dodge Viper generations at a glance
| Generation | Model years | Body style and badge landmarks | Key change |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | 1992–1995 | Viper RT/10 roadster | The original two-seat roadster entered production in mid-1992. |
| Second | 1996–2002 | RT/10 roadster; GTS coupe | The production GTS coupe debuted in spring 1996 and joined the roadster in the new generation. |
| Third | 2003–2006 | Viper SRT-10 roadster, then coupe | The roadster arrived for 2003; the SRT-10 coupe followed for 2005. |
| Fourth | 2008–2010 | Updated Viper | The 8.4-liter V-10 and substantial engine updates marked the 2008 return. |
| Fifth | 2013–2017 | SRT Viper (2013–2014); Dodge Viper (2015–2017) | The final generation launched as an SRT and returned to Dodge branding in 2015. |
Generation labels are not entirely uniform across references. Some year-by-year guides separate the 2015–2017 Dodge-badged cars from the 2013–2014 SRT Vipers, but the fifth generation is commonly dated from its 2013 launch. MotorTrend’s generation retrospective starts that generation in 2013, while Cars.com’s guide highlights the later Dodge-branded run.
What changed in each generation?
First generation: 1992–1995
The first Viper was the RT/10, a two-seat roadster. Chrysler’s historical overview says production began in mid-1992. The Viper’s concept had been shown in 1989, but 1992 is the start of the production-car timeline. Chrysler’s Viper history describes the original roadster and its production start.
Second generation: 1996–2002
The RT/10 continued, and the Viper gained a coupe: the GTS. Chrysler says the production GTS debuted in spring 1996. That year is the key transition into the second generation, rather than the start of a separate model-year span for the coupe. Chrysler’s history documents the coupe’s debut.

Third generation: 2003–2006
The Viper returned as the SRT-10 roadster for 2003, followed by an SRT-10 coupe for 2005. MotorTrend gives the 2003 roadster’s 8.3-liter V-10 output as 500 hp and 525 lb-ft. DaimlerChrysler’s March 1, 2005 press information lists the coupe’s 8.3-liter engine as 500 hp, 525 lb-ft, and 505 cubic inches. These figures describe the cited model-year introductions, not every trim or year in the generation. MotorTrend’s retrospective covers the 2003 car; the 2005 manufacturer press information gives the coupe figures.
Fourth generation: 2008–2010
The Viper returned for 2008 with an 8.4-liter V-10 and substantial engine updates. MotorTrend’s 2020 retrospective reports 600 hp and 560 lb-ft for the 2008 engine. MotorTrend’s generation history summarizes the update and output.

Fifth generation: 2013–2017
The fifth-generation car was unveiled in 2012 for the 2013 model year as the SRT Viper. It used an 8.4-liter V-10; MotorTrend reports 640 hp and 600 lb-ft at launch, rising to 645 hp by 2015. The badge changed back to Dodge Viper for 2015–2017. Dodge discontinued the car after the 2017 model year. MotorTrend’s retrospective covers the launch and output change; Cars.com’s timeline identifies the Dodge-branded years, and Dodge’s Viper page confirms the discontinuation.
Why are there gaps in the model-year timeline?
The Viper did not have a model for every year between 1992 and 2017. The commonly used generation spans end in 2006 and resume in 2008, leaving out 2007. They resume again in 2013 after the 2008–2010 run, leaving out 2011 and 2012. Mopar’s official year selector lists Vipers for 1992–2006, 2008–2010, and 2015–2017; Cars.com explicitly reports no production for 2011 or 2012. Mopar’s year selector shows the listed year groups, while Cars.com notes the later hiatus.

Finding parts or owner information for a Viper
Because the Viper is discontinued, check parts and vehicle availability against the exact car rather than assuming a listing covers every year or trim. Dodge directs owners to a local dealer for used-car inquiries, owner manuals, and available authentic Mopar parts, while cautioning that a dealer may not be able to source a used vehicle. Dodge’s Viper support page has current owner-information links. Mopar’s official year-specific catalog lets you select a model year; its selector does not guarantee that a particular part is in stock.
