The Dodge Hellephant is a factory-backed 426-cubic-inch supercharged GEN III HEMI crate engine with a published 1,000 horsepower and 950 lb-ft of torque. It is an engineering statement for experienced restomod, competition, off-road, and show-car builders—not a normal replacement engine or universal street-legal swap.

The engine’s published MSRP reference is $29,995 before freight, tax, installation, fabrication, electronics, drivetrain, cooling, fuel, exhaust, tuning, and legal-compliance work. The important question is not whether the Hellephant makes 1,000 hp; it does in the specified A30 configuration. The important question is whether the entire vehicle can safely, reliably, and legally support it.

The Hellephant is a crate-engine milestone—not a simple replacement motor

The Hellephant’s 1,000-horsepower rating is real, but the headline leaves out the scale of the project. This is a factory-backed 426-cubic-inch supercharged GEN III HEMI crate engine intended for experienced builders, competition vehicles, off-road projects, restomods, and highly engineered show cars. It is not a universal, emissions-compliant street-engine swap.

Even the published engine package is only one part of the installation. A workable build also needs the correct control electronics, fuel and cooling systems, exhaust, oil-pan arrangement, transmission, driveshaft, chassis, suspension, brakes, tires, tuning, fabrication, and legal review. The engine itself was listed at $29,995 in official catalog and product-page material, before freight, tax, installation, supporting hardware, and the rest of the vehicle.

For readers researching the central product, the relevant description is the Hellephant 426 crate engine: a 426-cubic-inch aluminum HEMI with a large positive-displacement supercharger, forged internals, and a nominal 1,000 hp and 950 lb-ft of torque. The exact contents and availability of any current package should be confirmed through current Direct Connection ordering documentation.

What is the Dodge Hellephant?

Mopar introduced the Hellephant as the 426 Supercharged Crate HEMI. Its name combines the legendary 426 HEMI “Elephant” nickname with the modern Hellcrate family. Direct Connection later formalized the aluminum-block, premium-fuel version as the Hellephant A30.

Unlike a bare replacement block, the Hellephant was presented as a complete crate-engine assembly. The published package included major operating hardware such as:

  • 426-cubic-inch aluminum GEN III HEMI engine assembly
  • 3.0-liter IHI supercharger and throttle body
  • Fuel injectors and coil packs
  • Water pump
  • Flywheel
  • Front-sump oil pan

That does not mean every accessory required by every vehicle is included. A current relaunch package may have different part numbers, contents, or ordering requirements, so buyers should treat the published list as a specification reference rather than a promise that every later package is identical.

Hellephant engine specifications

The following figures are the original published specifications in the 2022 Direct Connection catalog. They describe the well-known aluminum, premium-fuel 1,000-hp configuration and should not automatically be applied to every later Hellephant-family engine.

Specification Published figure or description
Displacement 426 cubic inches
Bore 4.125 inches
Stroke 4.000 inches
Block Cast aluminum GEN III HEMI block with four-bolt powder-metal caps
Crankshaft Forged steel
Connecting rods Forged 4340 H-beam rods with ARP 2000 bolts
Pistons Forged aluminum
Cylinder heads Aluminum HEMIspherical-chamber heads
Compression ratio 9.5:1
Supercharger 3.0-liter IHI positive-displacement supercharger
Published supercharger pulley 3.17 inches on the A30 1,000-hp configuration
Peak rating 6,800 rpm
Fuel guidance Premium fuel
Horsepower 1,000 hp
Torque 950 lb-ft

The 4.125-inch bore and 4.000-inch stroke produce the 426-cubic-inch displacement. That large displacement supplies substantial airflow and torque, while the 3.0-liter supercharger forces additional air into the engine. Forged rotating hardware, aluminum HEMI heads, and the factory calibration complete the package. The result is not simply a big naturally aspirated engine with an inflated rating; it is a deliberately integrated high-output combination.

How the Hellephant makes 1,000 horsepower

Three elements define the Hellephant’s output:

  1. Large displacement: The 426-cubic-inch engine provides a substantial air pump before boost is added.
  2. Positive-displacement supercharging: The 3.0-liter IHI unit delivers pressurized intake air across the operating range rather than relying only on high-rpm exhaust flow, as a turbocharger does.
  3. High-strength internal hardware and airflow: The forged crankshaft, 4340 H-beam rods, forged pistons, high-flow cylinder heads, and factory calibration are designed around the engine’s intended output.

For the A30’s published 1,000-hp specification, Direct Connection identified a 3.17-inch supercharger pulley and premium-fuel calibration. Those details matter: boost level, pulley size, fuel quality, temperature, calibration, and the specific variant all affect the result. “Hellephant” is a family name, not a guarantee that every engine carrying it produces exactly 1,000 hp.

Dodge and Direct Connection also discussed additional Hellephant-family versions, including cast-iron and E85-oriented concepts or variants. Some were described with output projections above 1,000 hp, but those figures were initially preliminary estimates. They should not be substituted for the original aluminum-block A30 catalog specification.

What you actually buy

The most important purchasing distinction is between the engine assembly and the installation electronics. The complete Hellephant engine is substantial, but it does not automatically solve communication, fuel-control, chassis, or drivetrain integration.

The engine assembly

The published assembly included the supercharger, throttle body, injectors, coils, water pump, flywheel, and a front-sump oil pan. Those components make it far more complete than a bare long-block, but the receiving vehicle still determines what must be changed around it.

The Hellephant installation kit

Mopar’s dedicated installation kit was designed to make integration more manageable for an experienced installer. Listed components included:

  • Powertrain control module
  • Power-distribution center
  • Engine and chassis wiring
  • Accelerator pedal
  • Ground jumper
  • Oxygen sensors
  • Charge-air-temperature sensors
  • Fuel-pump-control module
  • CAN-bus interface device

This is closer to a factory-oriented control and wiring solution than a universal plug-and-play swap kit. The CAN-bus interface, pedal, sensors, fuel-pump control, and chassis wiring still have to be installed correctly and made to coexist with the recipient vehicle’s electrical system.

Accessory-drive components, exhaust parts, oil-pan solutions, air-conditioning hardware, and other support pieces may be separately required. Mopar has listed items such as a rear-sump oil-pan kit, FEAD hardware, exhaust-manifold components, an A/C expansion kit, and a 45-degree oil-filter adapter as supporting options. Compatibility depends on the chassis, steering arrangement, crossmember, suspension, accessories, and intended use; none should be treated as mandatory for every build.

Why a Hellephant swap is difficult

The engine may arrive as a factory-backed assembly, but the vehicle must be engineered around 1,000 hp and 950 lb-ft. The following areas deserve a plan before the engine is ordered.

1. Chassis and engine-bay fitment

A 426 GEN III HEMI is not a universal physical fit. The builder must account for engine mounts, hood clearance, steering-shaft interference, exhaust-port location, accessory placement, wiring routes, cooling-pack dimensions, and service access. The published engine uses a front-sump oil pan, but many chassis layouts need a rear-sump arrangement or another oil-pan solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Official Hellephant build coverage has shown classic vehicles receiving custom chassis work, modified oil-pan arrangements, heavy-duty transmissions, upgraded suspension, and free-flowing exhaust. Those examples demonstrate the project scope; they are not proof that the same parts will fit another vehicle.

2. Transmission and driveline

A transmission that survives an ordinary V8 may not be suitable for 950 lb-ft, especially if the vehicle has sticky tires, aggressive gearing, or repeated drag launches. The transmission, clutch or torque converter, bellhousing, crossmember, driveshaft, differential, axles, and half-shafts all need to be selected as a system.

The engine’s included flywheel does not make every transmission compatible. Confirm the transmission pattern, clutch or converter arrangement, starter position, crank-trigger and control requirements, driveline angles, and available tunnel space before fabrication begins.

3. Fuel system

The Hellephant includes injectors, but injectors alone are not a complete fuel system. The tank, lines, pump or pumps, regulator, filters, wiring, fuel-pump-control module, and return strategy must support the engine’s demand. Premium-fuel guidance also means the vehicle needs a reliable supply of the correct fuel, not merely a high-octane tune on paper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Cooling and charge-air management

Supercharged power creates considerable heat. The radiator, fans, hoses, coolant capacity, intercooling or charge-air system, heat exchanger, and airflow through the front of the vehicle must be planned together. A radiator that was adequate for a lower-output engine may not provide enough thermal margin in traffic, during track use, or in hot weather.

5. Exhaust and intake routing

The supercharger and throttle body establish the intake path, but the vehicle still needs suitable air filtration and ducting. On the exhaust side, the manifolds or headers must clear the frame, steering, brake components, floor, and transmission. The exhaust must also provide enough flow without creating unacceptable heat, noise, or ground-clearance problems.

6. Suspension, brakes, tires, and safety

Power is only useful if the vehicle can control and stop it. A serious build should evaluate spring and damper rates, control arms, bushings, steering, braking capacity, brake cooling, wheel load ratings, tire speed and traction ratings, driveshaft containment where appropriate, fuel-system protection, and structural integrity.

One thousand horsepower can expose weaknesses that were invisible at half the output. Frame flex, axle-wrap, inadequate wheel studs, marginal cooling fans, or old brake lines are not minor details in a high-output restomod.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Calibration and troubleshooting

The control kit reduces the amount of electronics that must be designed from scratch, but it does not eliminate commissioning. The builder must verify grounds, CAN-bus communication, sensor signals, fuel pressure, crank and cam synchronization, throttle-pedal operation, cooling-fan control, oxygen-sensor placement, and fault-code behavior before applying full load.

Do not treat a first start as a dyno pull. A sensible commissioning sequence is:

  1. Inspect the installation and confirm fluid levels, grounds, fasteners, belt alignment, and connector seating.
  2. Prime and verify the fuel system while checking for leaks.
  3. Confirm sensor readings and electronic communication before extended running.
  4. Start the engine and check oil pressure, coolant temperature, charging voltage, fuel pressure, and abnormal noise.
  5. Resolve diagnostic faults before road or track load.
  6. Use a qualified tuner and controlled testing to validate air-fuel behavior, knock response, temperatures, and driveline operation.

Is the Hellephant street legal?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer because legality depends on the vehicle’s model year, registration status, intended use, emissions rules, inspection program, and jurisdiction.

The official catalog guidance says crate HEMI engines are designed for vehicles manufactured before model year 1976 or for competition vehicles driven on tracks or off-road. It warns that installing these parts in a 1976-or-newer vehicle and driving that vehicle on public roads may violate federal, state, provincial, or local emissions laws. Mopar’s product material likewise labels the listed performance products as not legal on pollution-controlled vehicles or vehicles registered for highway use.

That guidance is not a blanket exemption for every pre-1976 car. A local authority may still regulate safety equipment, noise, inspections, registration, insurance, fuel systems, or engine swaps. A competition or off-road vehicle may also have rules governing where and how it can be operated.

Before purchase, verify all of the following with the relevant local authority, inspection agency, insurer, and—where appropriate—an authorized performance dealer:

  • Whether the engine swap is permitted in the vehicle’s model year and registration category
  • Whether emissions equipment, testing, or an emissions executive order is required
  • Whether the vehicle can retain road registration after the modification
  • Noise, fuel-system, brake, lighting, and safety requirements
  • Whether the insurer will cover the completed vehicle and its stated use

The factory-backed nature of the Hellephant does not make every installation street legal.

Price, warranty, and availability

The 2022 Direct Connection catalog listed the Hellephant at $29,995 and described that catalog entry as “no warranty, sold as-is.” Mopar product-page material also shows a $29,995 MSRP reference for the Hellephant A30 lineage and identifies a separate Hellephant A30 non-E.O. engine kit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That figure should be treated as a published MSRP reference, not a guaranteed current checkout price. The final cost may include freight, tax, dealer markup, storage, special-order fees, installation, fabrication, tuning, and supporting components. The engine price alone can represent only the first major line item in a complete build.

The original launch was followed by strong demand and limited ordering. Later Direct Connection material reintroduced the engine as the Hellephant A30. Official DodgeGarage coverage in January 2026 described the A30 relaunch as part of the current crate-engine lineup, following relaunch activity discussed around the 2025 SEMA Show.

That relaunch context does not establish live inventory, a guaranteed lead time, or an August 13, 2026 order status. Availability can change by dealer and production allocation. Buyers should confirm the current part number, package contents, price, deposit terms, delivery estimate, warranty language, and return policy directly with Direct Connection or an authorized Dodge Power Broker before sending money.

Who should buy a Hellephant?

The Hellephant makes sense for a narrow but enthusiastic audience:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Experienced engine-swap builders
  • Professional restoration and performance shops
  • Classic-Mopar owners planning a major restomod
  • Show-car builders who value factory-backed Mopar engineering
  • Track, drag, competition, or off-road users with a properly engineered chassis

It is a poor fit for a first engine swap, a budget daily driver, or anyone seeking a straightforward emissions-compliant upgrade. The Hellephant’s cost and complexity are not limited to the crate on the pallet. The buyer is also committing to the surrounding vehicle systems and to the legal restrictions attached to the product.

How to approach technical support

Because fitment and legality are vehicle-specific, a factory-backed channel is more useful than relying on a generic parts listing alone. Authorized Dodge Power Brokers and Direct Connection contacts can help confirm the current product path and available technical information, but buyers should still obtain chassis-specific engineering advice from a qualified shop.

When contacting a dealer or builder, provide the vehicle year, make, model, body style, chassis modifications, transmission plan, intended fuel, intended use, registration location, and whether the vehicle must remain road legal. Those details determine whether the standard engine package is appropriate and which supporting components may be needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A specialist shop experienced in Hellephant engine installation, classic Mopar fabrication, high-output driveline work, and chassis upgrades is usually a more appropriate partner than a general repair facility. Ask for a written scope of work that separates engine, electronics, fabrication, fuel, cooling, exhaust, transmission, suspension, brakes, tuning, and compliance costs.

Hellephant versus a conventional replacement engine

Consideration Hellephant Conventional replacement
Primary purpose Extreme performance, restomod, competition, off-road, or show build Repair, restoration, daily use, or moderate performance
Output Published 1,000 hp and 950 lb-ft for the aluminum A30 configuration Usually much lower, depending on engine
Integration Requires major systems engineering and often fabrication May be close to factory fitment
Emissions and road use Significant restrictions; verify locally More likely to have a compliant replacement path
Budget Nearly $30,000 published engine MSRP before installation and support systems Broad range, often substantially lower
Best buyer Experienced builder with a complete vehicle plan Owner prioritizing reliability, legality, and predictable installation

The Hellephant is compelling precisely because it is excessive. That excess is also why it should not be selected as though it were an ordinary replacement engine.

Frequently asked questions

Is every Hellephant engine rated at 1,000 hp?

No. The original aluminum, premium-fuel Hellephant A30 configuration is the familiar 1,000-hp, 950-lb-ft specification. The broader family includes other A30, A170, C30, and C170 concepts or variants, including cast-iron and E85-oriented versions. Some output figures were preliminary projections rather than a universal rating.

Does the Hellephant come with everything needed for a swap?

No. The engine assembly and dedicated installation kit cover important hardware, but the recipient vehicle still needs compatible mounts, transmission and driveline parts, fuel and cooling systems, exhaust, accessories, chassis work, safety upgrades, tuning, and possibly a different oil-pan arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can the Hellephant be installed in a modern street car?

Physical installation may be possible in some projects, but public-road legality is a separate question. Official material warns that installing these crate-engine parts in 1976-and-newer pollution-controlled vehicles may violate emissions laws. Verify the rules for the vehicle’s registration jurisdiction before buying.

How much does a complete Hellephant build cost?

There is no universal total because the receiving vehicle determines the amount of fabrication and supporting hardware. The published engine MSRP reference is $29,995, and the final build can add a control kit, transmission, fuel system, cooling system, exhaust, chassis and brake upgrades, labor, tuning, freight, taxes, and compliance work.

Is the Hellephant currently in stock?

Official material confirms a Hellephant A30 relaunch within the Direct Connection lineup, but that does not establish live inventory or a guaranteed lead time. Confirm availability and delivery terms through the current official ordering channel or an authorized Dodge Power Broker.

The bottom line

The Dodge Hellephant remains one of the most dramatic factory-backed crate engines ever offered: a 426-cubic-inch aluminum GEN III HEMI, forged internal hardware, a 3.0-liter supercharger, and a published 1,000-hp output. Its engineering substance supports the headline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

But the Hellephant is not a shortcut. Nearly $30,000 buys the engine—not a finished powertrain, a compliant street vehicle, or a guaranteed plug-and-play installation. The right buyer is an experienced builder with a documented plan for the electronics, fuel, cooling, transmission, chassis, brakes, tires, tuning, transport, budget, and legal use. For that buyer, the Hellephant is an extraordinary foundation. For a daily-driver replacement or first swap, it is usually the wrong tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every Hellephant engine rated at 1,000 hp?

No. The familiar 1,000-hp rating applies to the aluminum, premium-fuel Hellephant A30 configuration. Other Hellephant-family versions have different specifications or preliminary projected outputs.

Does the Hellephant include everything needed for a swap?

No. The engine and installation electronics cover important components, but a complete swap still requires vehicle-specific mounts, drivetrain, fuel, cooling, exhaust, chassis, brake, tuning, and compliance work.

Can the Hellephant be used in a modern street car?

Not automatically. Official material warns that installing these parts in 1976-and-newer pollution-controlled vehicles may violate emissions laws. Registration, inspection, noise, safety, and insurance rules also vary by jurisdiction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does a complete Hellephant build cost?

The published MSRP reference is $29,995 for the engine. Freight, tax, dealer markup, installation, fabrication, electronics, transmission, cooling, fuel, exhaust, tuning, and safety upgrades are additional.

Is the Hellephant currently in stock?

Official material confirms an A30 relaunch in the Direct Connection lineup, but live inventory and lead time must be confirmed through the current official ordering channel or an authorized Dodge Power Broker.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Hellephant A30 is a genuine 1,000-hp, 950-lb-ft supercharged 426 HEMI crate engine, but the engine is only the beginning of the project. Its nearly $30,000 published MSRP excludes the integration work, supporting systems, and legal review required to use that power responsibly.
