Challenger production ended December 31, 2023, so buyers shopping new will find a 2026 Charger—not a new Challenger. The current Charger comes in two- and four-door versions, with gas and electric powertrains.
Is the Challenger or Charger better?
There is no single winner across the two nameplates: the Challenger is a discontinued model that must be bought used, while the 2026 Charger is the current new-car option. Which makes more sense depends on whether you want a particular Challenger year or trim, or a new Charger with Dodge’s current powertrain and body-style choices. They are not directly comparable on price because Charger figures below are new-car starting MSRPs, while Challenger prices depend on the individual used vehicle.

What are the main differences?
| Category | Dodge Challenger | 2026 Dodge Charger |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Discontinued; production ended December 31, 2023. | Current model lineup; Dodge lists 2026 versions. |
| Body styles | The familiar final-generation model was a two-door coupe. Exact body and specifications depend on model year. | Two-door and four-door configurations. |
| Powertrains | Varied by year and trim. There is no single engine or output that describes every Challenger. | Gas R/T and Scat Pack use a twin-turbo 3.0-liter SIXPACK inline-six; Daytona Scat Pack is electric. |
| Drivetrain | Varies by model year and trim; verify the specific car. | All 2026 models have all-wheel drive. Gas R/T and Scat Pack models can send all torque to the rear wheels on command. |
| Buying basis | Used-car price and condition depend on the specific vehicle and location. | New-car starting U.S. MSRP varies by trim and body configuration; see the price table below. |
Because the Challenger spans many model years and trims, compare specific examples rather than assuming one set of specifications applies to all. Dodge’s current Charger configurations and powertrain details are on its 2026 Charger FAQ and 2026 Charger trims page.

How much power does the 2026 Charger have?
Dodge publishes different outputs for each current Charger powertrain. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent comparative test.
| 2026 Charger version | Power | Torque | Manufacturer-published performance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gas R/T | 420 hp | 468 lb-ft | Not stated in the cited Dodge specifications. |
| Gas Scat Pack | 550 hp | 531 lb-ft | Not stated in the cited Dodge specifications. |
| Electric Daytona Scat Pack | 670 hp | 627 lb-ft | Dodge says 0–60 mph in 3.3 seconds. |
The R/T figures come from Dodge’s March 9, 2026 2026 Charger R/T announcement. The Scat Pack and Daytona Scat Pack figures are on Dodge’s Charger Scat Pack page and Charger Daytona Scat Pack page. Do not compare one trim’s output or acceleration claim with a different trim’s price or equipment.

Which one should you choose?
Choose a used Challenger if
- You want a specific discontinued model year, trim or configuration that is not offered in the current Charger lineup.
- You are comfortable evaluating a used car’s condition, maintenance history and fit with your budget. Compare listings with the same year and trim, and verify the vehicle’s specification rather than relying on a model-wide generalization.
- You need ownership support: Dodge points Challenger owners to parts, service and manuals. Confirm parts fit the exact year and configuration through Dodge’s Challenger owner resources.
Choose a new 2026 Charger if
- You want a current Dodge muscle car with a new-car purchase path and Dodge’s listed starting MSRP.
- You want to choose between two- and four-door body styles, or between gas R/T and Scat Pack models and the electric Daytona Scat Pack.
- You prefer all-wheel drive as standard across the 2026 lineup; gas R/T and Scat Pack models also offer the ability to direct all torque to the rear wheels on command, according to Dodge.
Dodge says qualifying purchases of Charger Scat Pack and Charger Daytona Scat Pack include one day of performance-driving instruction through Radford Racing School. Check Dodge’s March 9, 2026 announcement and current offer terms for eligibility and availability.

Dodge ended Challenger production on December 31, 2023. That makes the Challenger a used-car choice rather than a new-car alternative in 2026. Its history includes different model years and trims, so a used-car comparison needs the exact year and configuration; the broad Challenger name alone is not enough to establish engine, output or drivetrain.
