Dodge’s published figures give the 2023 Challenger SRT Demon 170 the quicker 0–60 mph time and quarter-mile elapsed time. Tesla’s Model S Plaid has the higher listed quarter-mile trap speed. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled head-to-head race, and the cars’ 0–60 figures do not use a confirmed matching timing method.
Which car is quicker to 60 mph?
Dodge claims the Demon 170 can reach 60 mph in 1.66 seconds. Tesla lists 1.99 seconds for the Model S Plaid, explicitly noting that its figure has rollout subtracted. Because the published information does not establish matching test conditions or timing conventions, the figures are not a like-for-like measurement. They show that Dodge publishes the lower number, not that a direct race has been settled.
Dodge’s figure is tied to the Demon 170’s performance setup and fuel capability: the car detects ethanol content, and its highest output requires fuel with more than 65% ethanol. The quoted time should therefore be read as a manufacturer claim, not a result guaranteed on any fuel or surface. Dodge’s launch specifications and Tesla’s Model S specifications provide the figures and qualifications.
What do the quarter-mile figures show?
| Measure | 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 | Tesla Model S Plaid |
|---|---|---|
| Quarter-mile elapsed time | 8.91 seconds, described by Dodge as NHRA-certified | 9.23 seconds, Tesla-listed |
| Trap speed | 151.17 mph | 155 mph |
The Demon 170 has the lower published elapsed time, while the Plaid has the higher published trap speed. Elapsed time measures how long a run takes to cover the distance; trap speed records speed at the finish. They are different measures, so the Plaid’s higher trap speed does not erase the Demon’s lower listed elapsed time—or prove which would win a run under identical conditions. Dodge’s figures are also repeated in NHRA’s launch coverage.

Why the Demon 170’s fuel matters
Dodge rates the Demon 170 at 1,025 hp and 945 lb-ft when ethanol content is above 65%. On E10, Dodge lists 900 hp and 810 lb-ft. The car detects ethanol content and adjusts its output; the headline power figure is not a description of every fill-up.
Tesla lists the Model S Plaid at 1,020 hp. Those ratings are useful context, but peak horsepower alone cannot determine the result of every acceleration run. Traction, surface, setup and measurement conditions matter too.

What kind of comparison is this?
The Demon 170 is configured for acceleration and drag use. Dodge lists staggered drag radials, Drag Mode suspension and TransBrake 2.0 among its equipment. That focus helps explain why a drag-strip elapsed time is central to its performance story, but the quoted result should not be generalized to handling, daily usability or performance on every public road.
The Plaid figures here are specifically for the Tesla Model S Plaid—not for every Tesla. Tesla’s cited specifications page, accessed October 8, 2026, says Model S is no longer in production and that pre-owned non-Signature Edition inventory may still be available. Its listed specifications can reflect a market configuration and may change, so check the page for the current listing.

Verdict by metric
- 0–60 mph: Dodge publishes the lower figure, but Tesla’s number subtracts rollout and matching test methods are not established.
- Quarter-mile elapsed time: Dodge publishes the lower figure: 8.91 seconds versus Tesla’s 9.23 seconds.
- Quarter-mile trap speed: Tesla publishes the higher figure: 155 mph versus Dodge’s 151.17 mph.
- Top speed: The cited figures do not support a direct winner. Tesla lists 163 mph without a paid hardware upgrade and indicates 200 mph with one; no directly comparable Demon 170 top-speed figure is established here.
So, if “faster” means the published 0–60 time or quarter-mile elapsed time, the Demon 170 has the edge on paper. If it means quarter-mile trap speed, the Model S Plaid has the higher listed number. Neither answer is a substitute for a same-condition head-to-head test.
