Islamabad’s announced vehicle-access rule requires an officially registered M-Tag for vehicles using roads in the capital, regardless of where they are registered. The originally announced January 1, 2026 start was extended by 15 days; reporting in January described checkpoint enforcement after the revised deadline. The latest specific report cited here, dated August 1, 2026, said enforcement was continuing. No current official notice confirming the rule’s exact status or exceptions on October 8, 2026 was identified, so check with the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration before travelling.
Do you need an M-Tag to enter Islamabad?
According to the administration’s launch announcement, vehicles operating on Islamabad roads were covered whether registered in Islamabad or another province. The announcement said an existing motorway-issued M-Tag would count, so owners with a valid tag would not need a second Islamabad tag. APP reported the launch plan on November 16, 2025.
The initial launch was described as an “e-tag” system. Later reports called the required credential an M-Tag. The reports describe an RFID sticker placed on the windshield and say readers at entry points and checkpoints identify vehicles. The compliance route established in those reports is official registration; they do not establish that a generic RFID sticker or aftermarket device is accepted. Dawn’s December 28, 2025 report described the tag and planned reader-based enforcement.
When did enforcement begin?
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| November 16, 2025 | APP reported an e-tag launch plan with an initial November 18 start date, coverage regardless of provincial registration, and acceptance of existing motorway M-Tags. APP |
| December 28, 2025 | Dawn reported that vehicles entering the capital would need an M-Tag from January 1, 2026, and reported an issuance fee of Rs250 at that time. Dawn |
| January 1, 2026 | Dawn reported that the deadline had been extended by 15 days. Dawn |
| January 15–18, 2026 | HUM News reported the revised deadline had expired, enforcement was to begin the following day at 12 checkpoints, and by January 18 vehicles without tags were being stopped at key entry and exit points. HUM News, January 15; HUM News, January 18 |
| August 1, 2026 | Pakistan Connect reported that enforcement continued at multiple checkpoints, with active readers and 15 registration booths. This is a dated report, not a current ICT notice. Pakistan Connect |
The January 15 reporting described 16 service locations, including 24/7 service at 26 Number Chungi and 17 Meel (Phagran). The later reported count of 15 booths illustrates why centre lists, counts and hours should be confirmed directly rather than treated as current. HUM News, January 15; Pakistan Connect, August 1.

What documents and fee were reported?
Dawn/APP reported on January 4, 2026 that applicants should show the vehicle’s registration card or book and the owner’s CNIC. Originals should be shown; copies might also be required for records. The launch announcement had specified the original registration card. Confirm the current document instructions before visiting a registration point. Dawn/APP, January 4; APP, November 16.
The Rs250 issuance fee was reported by Dawn on December 28, 2025. That dated figure is not confirmation of the price on October 8, 2026; ask ICT for the current fee before applying. Dawn.

How to check what applies before you travel
- Check whether the vehicle already has a motorway M-Tag. The launch announcement said existing motorway-issued M-Tags would count. If you are unsure whether the vehicle’s tag is valid or registered for that vehicle, confirm with the issuing authority or ICT rather than relying on a generic RFID sticker.
- Ask ICT for the current rule and any exceptions. The latest specific enforcement report cited here is from August 1, 2026; it does not establish the rule’s exact status or exemptions on October 8, 2026. Confirm the current position with the ICT administration before setting out.
- Confirm the nearest registration point, hours, fee and paperwork. Counts and service details varied across dated reports. Take the vehicle registration card or book and owner’s CNIC, but verify whether originals, copies or additional documents are currently required.
What the rule does—and does not—establish
Contemporary reports describe electronic readers at checkpoints and entry or exit points, and vehicles without tags being stopped after the revised deadline. They do not establish an independent measure of the scheme’s effect on security, congestion or traffic management. Those are stated aims, not demonstrated outcomes in the reports cited here.
One APP article dated December 29, 2025 gave a July 1 enforcement date, conflicting with the contemporaneous January deadline coverage and the subsequent January reports of implementation. It should not be treated as the operative deadline. APP, December 29, 2025.

This Islamabad vehicle-access scheme is distinct from M-Tag use for motorway tolls. A motorway toll rule, penalty or court proceeding does not by itself establish the current Islamabad entry requirement.
