Yes, some USPS trucks are recording video as part of a limited pilot—but the available information does not show that every mail truck has the new cameras or explain who can access a specific recording. A September 30, 2026 report describes a pilot involving 100 vehicles in the Washington, DC area. The reported camera system is for scanning roads and signage, not automatic license-plate reading.
What the reported USPS camera pilot does
On September 30, 2026, 404 Media reported that USPS confirmed a limited pilot with camera company Nextbase. The report describes a USPS Labor Relations letter to National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) President Brian Renfroe, posted by an NALC branch, as the source for the operational details below. Those details describe the reported pilot, not a complete public technical specification.
- Scale and location: 100 vehicles in the Washington, DC area.
- Camera position: forward-facing, mounted inside the trucks.
- When recording begins: when the vehicle is put in drive and has left the postal facility.
- Stated task: scan and analyze roads and signage, and map roadways and sidewalks.
- Audio: the letter, as summarized in the report, says the cameras do not record audio.
- Expected duration: several months. The report said the pilot was scheduled to start September 21, 2026; it did not establish a completion date.
USPS’s spokesperson told 404 Media: “The Postal Service is conducting a limited pilot to assess whether vehicle-mounted cameras can help identify roadway conditions and support community safety. The pilot includes privacy safeguards and requires no additional action from employees. Findings will inform any future decisions.” This describes USPS’s stated purpose; it does not establish the pilot’s effects or specify each privacy safeguard. Read the 404 Media report.
The report says the pilot cameras do not use automatic license-plate-reader software. It also says USPS trucks already have external 360-degree cameras that capture around the vehicle for a period of time, but does not establish that every truck has those cameras or explain their access and retention rules.

Who can access the footage?
The public information cited for this pilot does not name the people or organizations authorized to view its raw video or derived data. It also does not publish a pilot-specific retention schedule or vendor-access conditions. The report’s reference to “privacy safeguards” is not a disclosure of those controls, so it cannot establish that access is limited to USPS, available to law enforcement, or open to the camera vendor.
