They can—but only if the specific van’s price, payload, body layout and usable range suit the job. Compare prices on the same VAT and grant basis, then check the payload of the exact version you would buy. A headline maximum for a model range is not a promise about every configuration, and payload alone cannot tell you whether your goods will fit.

These manufacturer figures illustrate different van sizes and configurations, so they are not a like-for-like ranking. Prices may include different grant amounts or use different VAT bases; check the basis before treating one as cheaper.

These are published specifications and prices, not independent tests. The figures do not establish how far any van will travel with a particular load or what it will cost a particular business to own.
How to tell whether the price is comparable
Put every quote on the same VAT basis
Ford’s example gives both excluding- and including-VAT prices. The Vauxhall price is shown excluding VAT, while Renault’s starting price is presented with a grant included. Volkswagen’s opened page gives a starting price, but its VAT and grant basis should be confirmed for the specific quote. Compare all the amounts either including VAT or excluding VAT, as appropriate for your business, and make clear which basis you are using.

Check whether the grant is already included
GOV.UK says: “Some vans can be sold at a 35% discount. The seller will include the discount in the purchase price.” That is the government’s current guidance, accessed 11 October 2026; it does not mean every electric van or every version qualifies. A grant-inclusive offer and a pre-grant list price are different price bases. Ask the seller to show the vehicle price, any grant or other discount, VAT and the amount payable in writing.

How to check whether the payload works
Start with the cargo you actually carry, not the largest payload number advertised for a model family. Confirm the payload for the exact body, wheelbase, roof and equipment specification in the written quotation or vehicle documentation. Added equipment or a different body configuration can affect what the van can carry; make sure the figure you rely on applies to the vehicle being priced.
Then check the load’s physical dimensions and loading method. A van can have enough payload by weight but still fail the job if cargo does not fit through the doors, between the wheel arches or within the load area. Pallet capacity, where stated, is useful context but does not replace a weight check.

- Record the maximum weight of the cargo you expect to carry, including packaging and any items travelling with it.
- Ask for the exact configured van’s payload, rather than a range-wide maximum.
- Check load length, width and height, access, and any required pallet arrangement.
- Allow for any fit-out or equipment that will be installed before assessing the remaining carrying capacity.
Why range belongs in the same decision
The quoted range figures in the table are manufacturer claims. They are not evidence of the distance a van will cover on your routes with your load, and a headline range should not be treated as a loaded real-world guarantee. Compare the route, expected load, charging access and battery specification with the vehicle you are considering. Renault’s displayed Kangoo configuration, for example, lists 44 kWh usable capacity; that is a configuration-specific figure, not a direct measure of range under your working conditions.
Does the purchase price pay off against diesel?
Price and payload alone cannot establish that. A fair ownership-cost comparison needs the electric and diesel vans’ actual purchase or finance costs, mileage, electricity and fuel prices, charging mix, maintenance, insurance and depreciation. The published examples above do not provide a matched total-cost calculation, so they cannot support a reliable payback period.

Before deciding, get written quotes for the exact vehicles and compare them against your real work pattern. Include charging costs and access in the calculation, and use the payload and body layout that your loads require—not a best-case figure from a broader range.

Manufacturers may present range-wide peaks that do not belong to the same version. Ford’s E-Transit Custom page warns that its figures may represent peak performance across different series.
