Diesel and kerosene are related petroleum distillates, but they are different fuel grades intended for different equipment. Diesel is chiefly used in engines; kerosene is commonly used in heaters and lamps and is also a component of aviation turbine fuels. Their shared origin does not make them interchangeable: use only the fuel grade specified by the engine or appliance manufacturer.
How are diesel and kerosene different?
Both fuels are mixtures of hydrocarbons distilled from crude oil, not single chemical compounds. Their composition varies with the product grade, crude source, refining and, for diesel, additives. Their uses and formal specifications differ, so the name “oil” or a similar appearance is not enough to establish compatibility.
| Comparison | Diesel | Kerosene |
|---|---|---|
| Typical uses | Road vehicles, ships, trains, generators and other engine-powered equipment. U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) | Space heaters, cook stoves, water heaters and wick lamps; also a major component of aviation turbine fuels. UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and EIA |
| U.S. grade references | No. 1 and No. 2 diesel are defined with reference to ASTM D975. EIA | No. 1-K and No. 2-K kerosene are defined with reference to ASTM D3699. EIA |
| Composition overview | UKHSA describes a typical diesel category as generally C8–C21 hydrocarbons, with up to 25% aromatic compounds; actual formulations vary. UKHSA | UKHSA describes kerosene as a mixture of C9–C16 hydrocarbons. UKHSA |
What are the fuels used for?
Diesel: primarily an engine fuel
Diesel grades are made for compression-ignition engines. In the United States, EIA’s definitions tie No. 1 and No. 2 diesel to ASTM D975; its No. 2 diesel entry describes use in high-speed engines such as those in locomotives, trucks and automobiles. Diesel is also used in generators and nonroad equipment. The exact grade required depends on the engine and its operating requirements.
Kerosene: heating, lighting and aviation uses
Kerosene is commonly used in space heaters, cook stoves, water heaters and wick lamps. EIA’s U.S. definitions distinguish No. 1-K and No. 2-K kerosene under ASTM D3699. Kerosene is also used as a component of aviation turbine fuels, but that does not mean ordinary kerosene is jet fuel. UKHSA cautions that jet fuels are a distinct class of petroleum distillates containing a range of chemical additives.

Can you use kerosene instead of diesel?
Do not assume so. The fuel references here do not establish that kerosene is compatible with any particular diesel engine, nor do they approve substituting diesel in a kerosene appliance. Follow the equipment maker’s specified fuel grade and consult its instructions or manufacturer if the requirement is unclear. A space heater designed for kerosene is an example of equipment with a stated fuel purpose, not evidence that other fuels are suitable.
For U.S. products, the ASTM references distinguish diesel grades (ASTM D975) from kerosene grades (ASTM D3699). Elsewhere, standards and product names may differ; check the requirements that apply where the equipment is used.

Do the fuels burn hotter or cleaner?
There is no general ranking established here for which fuel burns hotter, cleaner or more efficiently across all grades and devices. Results depend on the specific fuel, burner or engine, and operating conditions. A comparison without those details would not tell you which fuel is suitable for your equipment.
What are the safety risks?
Handling the unburned liquids
UKHSA classifies both diesel and kerosene as highly flammable and describes potential harm from swallowing, aspiration into the lungs, inhaling vapors and repeated skin exposure. Keep either fuel away from ignition sources, avoid skin contact and never siphon fuel by mouth. If kerosene is swallowed, UKHSA advises seeking medical advice and not inducing vomiting; inhalation also warrants medical advice. Follow local emergency guidance for any suspected exposure.

Exhaust from burning diesel
Liquid-fuel exposure and engine exhaust are different hazards. EPA notes that diesel engine exhaust includes particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, and that sulfur content is relevant to pollution. This concerns emissions from combustion, not the risks of touching or swallowing the unburned fuel.

“Diesel” and “kerosene” cover product categories with specifications, rather than one universal recipe each. EIA’s U.S. definitions describe kerosene as boiling between 300 and 550 °F and having a flash point above 100 °F under ASTM Method D56; those values describe the referenced U.S. category and should not be treated as guarantees for every product sold under a similar name elsewhere. Likewise, the composition figures above are overviews, not formulas for every grade.
