U.S. on-highway diesel averaged $6.529 per gallon for the week of September 21, 2026—the recent peak behind the $6.53 headline. The average eased to $6.199 for the week of October 5, the latest figure in the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s October 6 update. These prices add pressure to trucking costs and cash flow, but the available evidence does not show that every carrier—or the industry as a whole—is losing money.
How diesel prices reached $6.53—and where they stand now
The $6.53 figure is a rounded weekly national average, not a current price at every pump. EIA’s on-highway series includes taxes and represents a weekly estimate. It puts U.S. diesel at $6.529 per gallon for the week of September 21, 2026, then $6.382 for September 28 and $6.199 for October 5. EIA’s weekly diesel price series provides the figures and regional breakdowns.
The national average also conceals substantial regional differences. For the week of October 5, EIA reported $5.951 per gallon on the East Coast, $6.286 in the Midwest, $5.819 on the Gulf Coast, $6.267 in the Rocky Mountain region, and $7.229 on the West Coast. California’s average was $8.082. A carrier’s actual fuel bill can differ further according to its routes, fuel efficiency, purchasing arrangements, and where it buys.
Why diesel became so expensive
Diesel prices reflect several costs, not just the price of crude oil: crude, refining margins, distribution, retail margins, and taxes all contribute. EIA says tight supplies of distillate fuel oil and elevated crude prices drove fuel prices higher in recent months. A high diesel crack spread—the difference between the price of crude oil and refined diesel—also added to retail prices. Its explanation describes multiple pressures rather than attributing the increase to one event. See EIA’s analysis of petroleum and diesel markets.

Why high diesel puts trucking under pressure
Fuel is only one item in a carrier’s operating budget, but it can absorb cash quickly: trucks need fuel before a carrier necessarily receives payment for a delivered load. Rising costs therefore can squeeze both margins—the amount left after expenses—and working cash, even when a company has some mechanism for passing fuel costs to customers.
The broader cost picture was already strained. The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) reported that the average cost to operate a truck in 2025 was $2.336 per mile, up 3.4% from 2024 and the highest in its report series. ATRI also reported that carriers reduced truck counts by 2.4% and left an average of 10% of trucks unseated amid rising costs and stagnant rates. Those are industry benchmarks and indicators of pressure, not proof that every carrier is unprofitable. See ATRI’s trucking research and operating-cost reporting.

Do fuel surcharges cover higher diesel costs?
Surcharges are intended to pass some fuel-cost changes through to a customer, but they do not guarantee full or immediate recovery. The formula, the fuel-price index used, the contract, and the timing of adjustments can vary. A surcharge set on a weekly schedule may lag a fast-moving market, while a small operator may have less leverage to raise a rate quickly.
Reported examples illustrate the issue without establishing a universal recovery rate. FreightWaves reported that Covenant Logistics founder and CEO David Parker discussed fuel expenses that fell outside surcharge recovery. A report by The Beacon described timing mismatches and the difficulty small operators face in raising rates quickly. These accounts show why a surcharge should not be treated as a dollar-for-dollar reimbursement for every carrier or load.

- TWO-STEP FUEL SYSTEM RESET: Includes AR6400-D Diesel Fuel System Cleaner + AR6500 Diesel Treatment (40 oz) for a complete clean-and-maintain solution
- HOW IT WORKS: Use AR6400-D first for a deep clean (12 oz treats 30-40 gallons), then use AR6500 at every fill-up for ongoing protection (40 oz treats up to 400 gallons)
- FOR ALL DIESEL ENGINES: Suitable for all diesel vehicles and equipment, including modern HPCR systems
- CLEANS INJECTORS & RESTORES RESPONSE: Removes injector deposits and restores spray patterns for smoother running, improved response, and more efficient combustion
- IMPROVES LUBRICITY (ASTM D6079): AR6500 is tested to improve lubricity by 43% to protect fuel system components, including wear-sensitive parts like the CP4 pump
Could higher diesel costs raise prices for consumers?
Higher fuel costs can feed into freight expenses: EIA says expensive diesel can contribute to higher costs for goods moved by road and rail. But the available sources do not quantify a consumer-price increase attributable specifically to the September 2026 diesel peak. Any effect on shelf prices depends on how transport costs move through contracts and supply chains, alongside other costs.
