By published peak torque, Caterpillar’s C27 industrial power unit leads this selection at 3,211 lb-ft at 1,200 rpm. It is not a pickup engine, however, and these figures do not form a universal ranking: they cover different applications, model years and output configurations. The list below compares the verified examples available, rather than inventing two entries to reach ten.
Notable diesel engines ranked by published peak torque
The ranking is strictly by the manufacturer-published peak torque figures listed below. It is not a ranking of reliability, fuel economy, towing ability or overall engine quality. Industrial power units and pickup engines are separated by application context; their torque numbers are not like-for-like shopping comparisons.
| Rank | Engine and rating context | Published peak torque |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Caterpillar C27 Industrial Diesel Power Unit | 3,211 lb-ft at 1,200 rpm |
| 2 | Caterpillar C18 Industrial Diesel Power Unit, rating above 560 kW | 2,736 lb-ft at 1,300 rpm |
| 3 | Caterpillar C15 Industrial Diesel Engine | 2,004 lb-ft at 1,400 rpm |
| 4 | Ford 6.7L Power Stroke High Output, 2026 Super Duty | 1,200 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm |
| 5 | Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel High Output, 2021 specification | 1,075 lb-ft; engine speed not stated on the cited page |
| 6 | Ford 6.7L Power Stroke standard output, 2026 Super Duty | 1,050 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm |
| 7 | Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel High Output, 2019 announcement | 1,000 lb-ft; engine speed not stated in the announcement |
| 8 | GM L5P Duramax, latest GM Powered Solutions specification | 975 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm |
| 9 | Caterpillar C7.1 Industrial Diesel Power Unit | 940 lb-ft; engine speed not stated on the cited page |
The available evidence supports nine distinct entries, not ten. The two Cummins high-output figures refer to different dated specifications and are listed separately to show the change; they should not be mistaken for two engines in one model year. Caterpillar’s C7.1 engine page gives a different figure, 935 lb-ft, so that number is not merged into the power-unit entry.
Industrial diesel engines: the three highest figures
Caterpillar C27: 3,211 lb-ft
Caterpillar lists the C27 Industrial Diesel Power Unit at 3,211 lb-ft at 1,200 rpm on its C27 Industrial Diesel Power Units specifications page. That is the largest published figure in this selection. Its industrial power-unit context matters: the C27 is not a direct alternative to a pickup powertrain, and its rating should not be read as a claim about vehicle towing performance.

Caterpillar C18: 2,736 lb-ft
For the C18 Industrial Diesel Power Unit rating above 560 kW, Caterpillar publishes 2,736 lb-ft at 1,300 rpm on its C18 Industrial Diesel Power Units page. This is a specific power-unit rating, not a generic figure for every C18 configuration.
Caterpillar C15: 2,004 lb-ft
Caterpillar lists 2,004 lb-ft at 1,400 rpm for the C15 Industrial Diesel Engine on its C15 Industrial Diesel Engines page. The page also gives a 595-hp maximum for a particular configuration; that horsepower figure does not apply universally to every C15.

Pickup diesel engines: model year and output version matter
Ford 6.7L Power Stroke High Output, 2026
Ford’s 2026 Super Duty specifications list 1,200 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm for the High Output 6.7L Power Stroke. The same specification lists 1,050 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm for the standard-output engine. These are separate output versions for the stated model year, not a single rating that applies to every Super Duty.
Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel High Output, 2021
Cummins’ 2021 6.7L Turbo Diesel specification gives the High Output version 1,075 lb-ft and 420 hp. The page also says certain Ram 2500 and 3500 configurations paired with a 68RFE automatic are rated at 850 lb-ft and 370 hp. The 1,075-lb-ft figure is therefore not a universal rating for every Ram configuration using a 6.7L Cummins.

Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel High Output, 2019
Cummins’ 2019 announcement listed 1,000 lb-ft and 400 hp for the high-output 6.7L; it listed 850 lb-ft and 370 hp for the standard-output version. This is a dated announcement, not a substitute for checking the rating of a particular truck and year.
GM L5P Duramax
GM Powered Solutions lists the L5P Duramax at 975 lb-ft at 1,600 rpm and 470 hp at 2,800 rpm on its L5P specifications page. GM says the engine was tested in Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD vehicles and that it produces 90% of peak torque from 1,550 to 2,850 rpm. That broad stated range describes torque delivery; it does not change the listed peak.

Why the Caterpillar C7.1 has two published torque figures
Caterpillar’s C7.1 Industrial Diesel Power Units page lists 940 lb-ft, while its separate C7.1 Industrial Diesel Engines page lists 935 lb-ft. Because the pages describe different product contexts and the available specifications do not establish that the configurations are identical, those values should not be averaged or presented as one universal C7.1 rating. The ranking uses the 940-lb-ft power-unit figure, tied to the C7.1 Industrial Diesel Power Units page.

What a torque ranking does—and does not—tell you
- Peak torque is one point on the curve. Where published, the engine speed identifies where that peak occurs; GM’s L5P specification also gives a range for delivering 90% of peak torque.
- Application class changes the comparison. Industrial power units serve different machinery and operating needs from pickup engines. A larger number alone does not make an industrial engine a better pickup choice.
- Output variant and year change the result. Ford’s 2026 standard and High Output figures differ, as do Cummins’ cited 2019 and 2021 high-output specifications.
- Torque alone cannot establish “best.” Reliability, efficiency, towing capacity, transmission pairing and suitability for a particular job require separate evidence. These specifications are manufacturer claims, not results from a common independent comparative test.
