The headline’s claim cannot be confirmed as a current ranking: the period it originally described is unresolved, and the latest snapshots in the available data do not show the Cybertruck ahead of the Ford Mustang Mach-E. In full-year 2024, the Mach-E ranked third with 51,745 estimated U.S. sales, while the Cybertruck ranked fifth with 38,965. In Q1 2026, the Mach-E again ranked ahead, seventh to the Cybertruck’s ninth. These are U.S. sales rankings, not comparisons of which vehicle is better to buy.
What the headline does—and does not—establish
The phrase “become third best-selling EV in America” needs a specific reporting period. The available sources do not identify or verify the period behind the original headline, so it should not be treated as a current or ongoing ranking. The figures below are separate U.S. sales snapshots; a quarterly rank cannot be combined with an annual one.

Cox Automotive and Kelley Blue Book model-level sales figures are estimates. The 2024 and 2025 figures below come from their annual reporting; the Q1 2026 figures are reported by Electrek, which attributes them to Cox Automotive.
How the Cybertruck and Mustang Mach-E ranked
| Period and source | Tesla Cybertruck | Ford Mustang Mach-E | What the comparison shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-year 2024, Cox Automotive/Kelley Blue Book | 38,965 estimated U.S. sales; fifth | 51,745 estimated U.S. sales; third | The Mach-E sold 12,780 more, and the Cybertruck was not third. |
| Full-year 2025, Kelley Blue Book | Not listed in KBB’s reported top 10 | 51,620 estimated U.S. sales; fourth | The Chevrolet Equinox EV ranked third with 57,945 sales. |
| Q1 2026, Electrek reporting Cox Automotive data | 3,519 reported U.S. sales; ninth | 4,600 reported U.S. sales; seventh | The Mach-E ranked ahead in this quarter. |
What changed in the broader EV market
Cox Automotive reported 1,301,411 U.S. EV sales in 2024, up 7.3% from 2023. In Kelley Blue Book’s account, EVs made up 7.8% of U.S. new-car sales across 2025, with the share at 10.5% in Q3 and 5.8% in Q4. KBB says the $7,500 federal EV tax credit ended in September 2025 and that some buyers moved purchases into Q3 ahead of the change. Cox Automotive’s Stephanie Valdez Streaty described 2025 as a year when federal incentive changes reshaped demand patterns that had driven record Q3 sales; that explanation is context, not proof that one factor alone caused every shift in sales.

What sales rank can tell a buyer
A sales rank describes reported U.S. sales during a defined period. It does not establish comparative range, charging speed or access, capability, reliability, purchase price, or ownership costs. Those questions require a separate comparison using the same model years and consistent evidence for both vehicles.

- Use annual figures to answer which model sold more over a full calendar year.
- Use a quarterly ranking only for that quarter; do not present it as a full-year result.
- Check whether a model is absent from a published top-10 list before drawing conclusions: absence means it was not listed there, not that its sales were zero.
