Roman’s primary mirror has origins in U.S. intelligence hardware, but the telescope was not a complete spy satellite that NASA converted into a space telescope. In 2012, the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) made two space-qualified telescope systems and associated components available to NASA. Roman uses one NRO-origin mirror, which NASA modified for the mission’s science goals.
What did the NRO give NASA?
NASA’s account describes a transfer of telescope systems and components—not two complete spacecraft. Each system included primary and secondary mirrors and supporting structures, and the telescopes had 2.4-meter apertures. The available records support describing Roman’s hardware as originating in a reconnaissance program; they do not establish that NASA received a finished satellite or reused a complete classified imaging system.

NASA’s mission history places the transfer in 2012. A NASA technical description of the NRO telescope systems details their assemblies and 2.4-meter apertures.
Where did Roman’s mirror come from, and what did NASA change?
Roman’s 2.4-meter (7.9-foot) primary mirror came from the NRO hardware. NASA modified the mirror’s shape and surface to meet Roman’s science objectives. It weighs 186 kilograms (410 pounds), according to NASA’s mirror history.

- HOBBY MODEL KIT – Unassembled model packed in an envelope with easy to follow instructions. Ideal for ages 14 and up.
- NO GLUE OR SOLDER NEEDED – Parts can be easily clipped from the metal sheets. Tweezers are the recommended tool for bending and twisting the connection tabs.
- HUBBLE TELESCOPE – 1 Sheet Model with a moderate difficulty level. Assembled Size: 3.00 x 2.00 x 2.50 inches.
- FROM STEEL SHEETS TO 3D – Pop out the pieces and connect using tabs and holes. Includes illustrated instructions.
- HIGHLY DETAILED ETCHED MODEL – Display your 3D model once completed - collect and build them all.
The mirror’s diameter matches Hubble’s primary mirror, but that does not make the observatories equivalent. NASA says Roman’s mirror is less than one-fourth Hubble’s weight, and Roman’s field of view is at least 100 times that of Hubble’s infrared instrument. Their instruments, wavelength emphases, and observing programs differ.
Was Roman originally a spy satellite?
Not in the sense of a completed satellite that was launched, then repurposed. The evidence supports a more specific account: NASA received telescope assemblies built for a reconnaissance program, and one of those mirrors became part of a new observatory after modification. Calling Roman a “spy satellite” is shorthand for the hardware’s origins, not a precise description of Roman’s design or flight history.

How did WFIRST become the Roman Space Telescope?
Roman was formerly known as the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope, or WFIRST. Its mission is broader than reusing one mirror: NASA identifies dark energy, exoplanets, and infrared astrophysics among its science priorities. The inherited mirror was one element in developing the observatory, not the mission’s purpose.
