Not established. The Cybertruck has strong current crashworthiness results from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), but those are not National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) five-star ratings. The available information also does not confirm that Cybertruck is Tesla’s latest vehicle to earn five NHTSA stars: a September 2026 secondary report names the 2026 Model 3 as a recipient, while its live NHTSA record was not verified.
What a 5-star crash rating means
NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program uses a one-to-five-star scale, with five stars the highest rating. It reports results from frontal, side and rollover evaluations. The overall score combines risk information from the frontal and side ratings with projected rollover risk. NHTSA describes the ratings as a tool for comparing vehicles, not a promise that occupants will avoid injury. NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings guidance explains the program.
Test results are not interchangeable across every vehicle. NHTSA says frontal and overall ratings should be compared only among vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds of one another. Side and rollover ratings can be compared across classes. A five-star result alone therefore does not establish that a vehicle is the “safest.”
Cybertruck’s current IIHS results are a different rating
The IIHS page for the 2026 Cybertruck lists a Top Safety Pick+ award and Good grades for small overlap front, updated moderate overlap front and updated side crashworthiness. It also lists Good ratings for standard vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian front crash prevention. These are IIHS ratings and award criteria, not NHTSA stars. See the IIHS 2026 Cybertruck ratings page.
#1 Best Overall
The distinction matters because IIHS evaluates and reports separate areas of performance. Crashworthiness grades, crash-prevention results, headlights and award eligibility should not be collapsed into one rating. In particular, an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ is not another way of saying that NHTSA awarded five stars.
Which Cybertrucks do the IIHS crashworthiness results cover?
IIHS says the relevant crashworthiness ratings apply to 2025–27 models built after April 2025. The institute notes that Tesla made changes to the front underbody structure and footwell for these later builds, so model year alone may not identify whether a particular truck is covered. Check the vehicle’s build date against the IIHS applicability note. IIHS lists the applicability information with its ratings.

One detail is easy to miss: in the updated moderate-overlap test, the rear passenger’s chest measure is Acceptable, while the other listed rear-passenger measures are Good. The overall test result should not be paraphrased as every measure being Good.
What the updated moderate-overlap test examines
IIHS’s updated moderate-overlap front test focuses on back-seat passengers. Its procedure simulates an offset collision at 40 mph, with 40% of the vehicle’s front overlapping the barrier. Those figures describe the test method, not an injury-rate result. IIHS described the updated test in its September 2025 EV ratings announcement.

The broader IIHS results include a separate lighting finding: the Cybertruck’s headlights are rated Poor because its low beams create excessive glare. That is a headlight evaluation, not a contradiction of the truck’s crashworthiness grades. The same IIHS announcement reports Good pedestrian crash-prevention performance.

The superlative is not confirmed by the available evidence. Tesla said on January 13, 2021, that Model Y was then its latest vehicle to earn a five-star NHTSA rating in every category. That is a historical statement about Model Y, not a current claim about Cybertruck. Tesla’s original Model Y announcement is dated January 13, 2021.

A secondary report published in September 2026 says the 2026 Model 3 received a five-star NHTSA overall rating. Because the current Model 3 record on NHTSA’s site was not verified, that report does not settle which Tesla most recently received five stars. It does mean the title’s claim that Cybertruck is the latest should not be presented as confirmed without checking the live agency record. The report is available at Teslarati.

How to compare safety results without mixing them up
- Identify the organization. NHTSA stars and IIHS grades come from separate programs; an award from one is not a rating from the other.
- Check the test and model applicability. For IIHS, confirm model year and production-date notes. For NHTSA, look at the specific year and vehicle record.
- Compare like with like. NHTSA frontal and overall ratings have class and weight limits; distinguish overall stars from individual test results.
- Keep categories separate. Crashworthiness, crash prevention and headlight performance describe different aspects of safety.
