Tesla and Elon Musk publicly acknowledged his account. But the available reporting does not independently prove that the car saved his life—or that it drove without his supervision.
What happened on Franklin’s reported hospital trip?
Franklin said an insulin-pump malfunction led to a medical crisis and that his blood glucose reading reached 670. Cybernews reported that he used his Model Y, with Full Self-Driving (FSD) engaged, to travel about 13 miles from his home in Virginia to a hospital; the car then offered to park there. These are details from Franklin’s account as relayed by reporting, not findings confirmed by medical records or vehicle telemetry in the available sources. Cybernews’s report describes his account.
The strongest supported description is that Franklin said FSD helped him get to the hospital. The phrase “literally saves a man’s life” is a characterization of the episode, not an independently established medical conclusion: the reporting does not document a diagnosis or show that he would otherwise have died.
What did Tesla and Elon Musk say?
Tesla reposted the story on April 11, 2024, with the statement: “FSD V12 helped owner get to the hospital when he needed immediate medical attention”. NHTSA correspondence recounts the repost and describes the trip as 13 miles. NHTSA’s correspondence records the agency’s concerns about the framing.

Cybernews reported that Musk replied to Franklin: “Glad Tesla FSD was there to help and that you’re feeling well!” Both responses show that Tesla and Musk publicly acknowledged the account. Neither amounts to independent verification of the medical details or proof that FSD caused Franklin’s survival.
Does Tesla Full Self-Driving take you to a hospital autonomously?
No. Tesla’s current support documentation calls the package Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and describes it as advanced driver assistance, not autonomous driving. Depending on the vehicle and the features available to it, it can handle tasks such as following a route, changing lanes, navigating around objects and making turns. Tesla says the driver must remain attentive and responsible for the vehicle’s speed and control. Availability can vary by vehicle configuration, hardware, software, region, model and trim. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) guidance states: “None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.”

Franklin’s account is one reported trip, not evidence that FSD can reliably provide emergency transport or safely take over if a driver becomes unable to drive. NHTSA warned that Tesla’s social posts could lead people to view FSD-Supervised as a chauffeur or robotaxi, even though the driver remains responsible for continued control of the driving task.
