No sourced statement confirms that Carlos Sainz predicted he would win the 2026 Formula One drivers’ championship. What he has said is that he believes he can win championships if he has a car capable of running at the front—and that winning with Williams is his ideal plan. That is an ambition, not a specific forecast for 2026. The claim that his supposed prediction “went viral” is also unsubstantiated: the available sources provide no view, share or engagement figures.
What did Sainz say about winning a championship?
In an interview reported by AS on June 4, 2026, Sainz said he knows he can win races and world championships if given a car that can run at the front. He also described winning races and titles with Williams as his ideal plan.
“It is true that as a driver I also like to win, and I know I can win races in F1 and I can win world championships if you give me a car to be at the front.”
The condition matters: Sainz was expressing confidence in his ability under the right circumstances, not naming himself as the 2026 champion or predicting that Williams would provide a title-winning car that season.

What did Sainz say about Williams in 2026?
After signing a new multi-year contract, Sainz discussed his commitment to Williams in an official team interview published August 19, 2026. He framed the challenge as helping the team return to the front:
“The target remains exactly the same: to bring this team back to where it belongs.”

“The challenge is on, and I’m ready for it.”
He also acknowledged a difficult season, saying the team had “hit a bump in the road” but had the ingredients to recover. These remarks describe a team goal and his willingness to pursue it; they do not forecast a 2026 drivers’ title. Because the interview is published by Williams, it establishes Sainz’s stated position, not an independent evaluation of the team’s prospects.
What is Williams’ championship target?
Williams team principal James Vowles has described a longer-term ambition. Formula1.com reported on May 31, 2026 that Vowles identified 2028 and 2030 as milestones, with championships a goal towards 2030. He said: “28 is one of our big milestones, 2030 the second of those two milestones – and championships towards 2030.”

A Mundo Deportivo report indexed on June 18, 2026 describes a separate hypothetical idea from Sainz: a format in which drivers would race different cars, giving them more equal opportunities in the drivers’ championship. The report’s headline says the idea would never happen. The article page could not be accessed for direct verification, so this point is best treated as the publication’s reported account—not as a verified full-interview transcript. In any case, the hypothetical format is not a forecast that Sainz will win the 2026 title.
