BMW’s fifth-generation X5 makes a bold break with the outgoing SUV: it adopts a taller, more upright front end, a new illuminated grille and a screen-heavy Neue Klasse cabin. Those changes may be a misstep for buyers who value the current X5’s familiar look and controls—but the available facts do not establish that customers broadly reject the redesign. Whether BMW “screwed up” comes down to what you want from an X5, and whether the new technology and expanded powertrain range outweigh the design and interface changes for you.
What changed on the 2027 X5?
BMW announced the fifth-generation X5 on June 30, 2026, as a 2027 model. The biggest visible shift is a more upright face, with a vertically aligned illuminated kidney grille and new double-X light icons. Winglet door handles blend into the side profile. These are BMW’s design choices; whether they improve the SUV’s appearance is subjective. BMW’s US announcement and its global press kit show the new styling.
Inside, BMW brings Neue Klasse technology to the X5. The announced cabin includes BMW Panoramic iDrive, a wide windscreen projection surface, a central display and a 3D head-up display. A passenger screen is optional in the global press kit; BMW’s US page also promotes available automatic doors and passenger-screen features. Feature availability can vary, so check the equipment list for the specific trim rather than assuming every item is standard.
BMW says adaptive suspension is standard in the new generation. For the electric iX5, the company says its “Heart of Joy” system coordinates several vehicle functions. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent assessments of ride quality, handling or everyday usability.

Why some X5 buyers may see the redesign as a mistake
The exterior is a sharper departure
The upright front, illuminated vertical grille and integrated handles give the new X5 a different visual identity from the outgoing model. If you prefer the current X5’s proportions or a less conspicuous front end, the redesign may feel like change for its own sake. That is a matter of taste, not evidence that the vehicle is objectively worse.
The cabin puts more emphasis on displays
Panoramic projection and a central screen are central to the new interior concept. That may appeal to drivers who want a modern, information-rich cockpit; others may prefer the outgoing cabin’s familiar arrangement. The announced equipment descriptions alone do not establish whether the new interface is easier to use while driving. A buyer deciding between generations should compare the controls and displays in person, not assume that more technology automatically means a better experience.

BMW’s confidence is not independent proof
BMW development chief Dr. Joachim Post said the new X5 would “set the benchmark in its class once again.” That is the company’s promotional view, not independent validation. BMW has also presented search-result language such as “what a mess” and “what has BMW done?” as examples of user phrasing; those phrases are not representative buyer polling. No reception statistic or named independent assessment establishes that buyers broadly dislike the new X5.
What the new X5 offers in return
BMW says the fifth-generation model is planned to offer five drive-system types, depending on market and timing: petrol and diesel engines with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and later hydrogen fuel cell. That breadth gives buyers more potential ways to match the vehicle to their driving and fueling needs, but it does not mean every version will be sold in every country or arrive at launch.

For US buyers, BMW lists preliminary starting MSRPs of $69,800 for the X5 40, $72,100 for the X5 40 xDrive, $77,500 for the X5 50e xDrive and $79,800 for the iX5 60 xDrive. The US announcement says each price requires a $1,450 destination and handling charge. These are BMW Group figures from 2026; check BMW and dealer pricing for current offers, fees and final configurations. BMW’s US announcement lists preliminary performance figures of 394 hp and 0–60 mph in 5.1 seconds for the X5 40 xDrive, with actual acceleration varying by specification and conditions.
BMW estimates 435 miles of US-market range for the iX5 60 xDrive. The company describes that as a preliminary estimate based on BMW AG testing following EPA testing procedures, not a final EPA certification. BMW’s global press kit gives a different range figure in its own market context; the two should not be blended into a single promise.

When the new X5 arrives in the US
BMW’s US rollout schedule starts with the X5 40 xDrive in October 2026. The rear-drive X5 40, X5 50e xDrive and iX5 60 xDrive are scheduled to follow in the first quarter of 2027, with additional models later in 2027. BMW’s global press kit instead describes first variants arriving in late November 2026 and electric and plug-in hybrid versions in early 2027. These dates reflect different market announcements, not one universal launch schedule.

- Design: Decide whether you prefer the outgoing X5’s appearance or the new model’s more upright front and integrated details.
- Cabin: Try the new display and control layout yourself. Screen features and passenger equipment may depend on trim or market.
- Powertrain: Consider whether you want a petrol or diesel mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid or battery-electric model, and verify which versions are actually offered where you live.
- Timing: If you need a vehicle before the relevant new-generation version reaches your market, the outgoing model may better fit your schedule.
- Price: Compare current, like-for-like local configurations and fees. BMW’s US figures are preliminary 2026 starting MSRPs, not a guarantee of a dealer’s final price.
BMW has announced a substantial redesign and broader planned powertrain choice, not proof that the X5 is a failure. Calling the change a mistake is defensible as a personal judgment—especially if you dislike the styling or prefer a less display-focused cabin—but it is not a demonstrated verdict from buyers or independent road testing.
