One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor U.S. shoppers, the 2025 Toyota Camry LE and Honda Civic sedan LX are two affordable, fuel-efficient examples with published manufacturer pricing; neither price alone proves long-term dependability. The available evidence does not support naming six cars as equally verified 2025 winners. J.D. Power’s dependability study measures owner-reported problems in three-year-old vehicles, while its model awards concern earlier model years. Here’s what those signals can—and can’t—tell you before you buy.
What does “dependable” mean in the 2025 evidence?
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study counts problems owners reported during the previous 12 months in vehicles that were three years old. Its results describe that surveyed cohort; they are not a direct forecast that a new 2025 vehicle will be trouble-free. In the study, lower problems-per-100-vehicles scores indicate fewer reported problems.

The study average was 202 problems per 100 vehicles. Buick led mass-market brands at 143, followed by Mazda at 161 and Toyota at 162. Toyota’s Avalon was the top overall model. These are study results, not guarantees for every vehicle from those brands or for every new model year. J.D. Power’s 2025 study details.

A separate J.D. Power awards page names the Toyota Corolla and RAV4 as the compact-car and compact-SUV winners, respectively, in the 2025 dependability awards. Those awards apply to 2022 model-year vehicles in the study cohort, not the 2025 versions. They are useful historical signals, but should not be presented as 2025-model reliability scores. See J.D. Two affordable 2025 examples with published U.S. prices
These examples pair official U.S. manufacturer figures with a clear trim and destination-charge convention. MSRP is not the same as a dealer’s transaction price: taxes, registration, options, dealer pricing and inventory can change what a buyer pays.
| Model and trim | Published MSRP | EPA fuel economy | What the figure establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Toyota Camry LE, hybrid | $28,700 base MSRP | 53 city / 50 highway mpg estimated | Toyota’s official LE figures; price is for the named trim, not every Camry configuration. Toyota Camry specifications. |
| 2025 Honda Civic sedan LX | $24,250 before destination; $25,345 including Honda’s stated $1,095 destination charge | 32 city / 41 highway / 36 combined mpg | Honda’s January 3, 2025 U.S. figures. MSRP excludes taxes, license, registration, options and premium colors; dealer prices may vary. Honda’s Civic pricing and EPA release. |
The Civic’s destination-inclusive MSRP is still not an out-the-door quote, and the Camry price shown is its base MSRP. Compare actual dealer offers using the same equipment and fees rather than treating either manufacturer figure as a guaranteed purchase price.
Which other models have a relevant signal—and what is missing?
The available findings point to candidates, but do not provide equivalent 2025 pricing, EPA economy and model-specific dependability evidence for six vehicles. The distinction matters: a shortlist of plausible cars is not the same as a verified ranking.
- Toyota Corolla and RAV4: J.D. Power’s 2025 awards identify the 2022 model-year vehicles as winners in their respective categories. That is an older-vehicle dependability result, not a verdict on 2025 models.
- Mazda3: Mazda placed second among mass-market brands in the 2025 study at 161 problems per 100 vehicles. That brand result does not establish a 2025 Mazda3 model score.
- Honda Civic: J.D. Power’s 2025 Civic page reports an 84/100 quality-and-reliability score, but says previous-year ratings are used for current model-year ratings until new survey data become available in September. It should not be treated as a direct measurement of 2025 owners’ experience. J.D. Power’s 2025 Civic page.
- Honda Accord: IIHS lists the 2025–26 Accord as a Top Safety Pick+. That is a safety award, not a dependability rating. IIHS midsize-car award information.
- Toyota Camry: IIHS likewise lists the 2025–26 Camry as a Top Safety Pick+. The award applies to the listed model years and safety criteria; it does not demonstrate long-term reliability. IIHS midsize-car award information.
Because comparable price, fuel-economy and model-level dependability evidence is not established here for six cars, calling these six “the most dependable” would overstate what the published figures show.
How to use safety awards in a car comparison
IIHS awards evaluate vehicles against specified crashworthiness, headlight and pedestrian crash-prevention criteria, with awards organized by vehicle category. Its small-car page lists 2025 Honda Civic sedan and hatchback, Mazda3 sedan and hatchback, Hyundai Elantra, Kia K4 (with build-date qualifications) and Toyota Prius. The page cautions that an award for a small car does not mean it protects occupants as well as a larger vehicle without an award. IIHS small-car awards and qualifications.
Safety recognition can help distinguish crash-protection performance within a class, but it should be kept separate from dependability evidence. Check the exact model year, body style and any build-date conditions on the IIHS listing before relying on an award.

What to check before deciding whether a car fits your budget
- Compare like with like: Match model year, trim, powertrain and included equipment. A base price does not describe a higher trim or an all-wheel-drive configuration.
- Get an out-the-door quote: Ask the dealer to itemize the vehicle price, destination, options, taxes, registration and fees. Manufacturer MSRP is a suggested price, not a promise about local transaction prices.
- Check the right evidence: Separate brand-level results, model awards for older cohorts, current-model ratings that reuse prior-year data, and safety awards. They answer different questions.
- Estimate your own running costs: EPA ratings allow a consistent fuel-economy comparison, but actual mileage depends on driving and conditions. Include insurance, maintenance, financing and expected annual mileage in your household budget.
Toyota states that hybrid-battery warranties for Toyota hybrids from model year 2020 onward cover 10 years from first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. Review the warranty terms for the specific vehicle and market before treating coverage as a substitute for reliability evidence. Toyota Camry warranty and specifications.
