Each version is built to run on a single fuel, while Cummins says the engines share a core architecture and many components.
What is Cummins’ HELM platform?
HELM stands for “Higher Efficiency, Lower Emissions, Multiple Fuels.” Cummins uses the name for a modular engine strategy that applies a common base architecture to engines designed around different fuels. The company says many components below the head gasket are shared; components above it vary to suit each fuel. Cummins describes the platform as a way to preserve commonality where possible while developing powertrains for different transportation needs.
“Fuel agnostic” refers to the architecture and product-family approach. It does not mean an individual engine can be switched among fuels. Diesel, natural-gas and hydrogen HELM engines are distinct, single-fuel variants.
Which HELM engines are available, and which are planned?
| Variant | Fuel | Status described by Cummins |
|---|---|---|
| X15N | Natural gas | In full production in North America, according to Cummins’ May 2025 explainer. |
| X15H | Hydrogen | Under development; Cummins said production was slated within the next decade. This is a company roadmap, not a confirmed launch date. |
| Next-generation X15 | Diesel | Announced in May 2024 as part of the 15-liter HELM platform. |
These status descriptions reflect the cited Cummins announcements and are not a guarantee of availability for a particular truck, OEM or market. The company’s May 2025 HELM explainer discusses the natural-gas and hydrogen variants.

What is changing with the X15 diesel?
Cummins announced its next-generation X15 diesel in May 2024 as part of the 15-liter HELM platform. The company stated ratings of up to 605 hp and 2,050 lb-ft of torque, and said the engine is intended to improve fuel efficiency and greenhouse-gas performance. Those figures are manufacturer-stated ratings, and the efficiency and emissions improvements are Cummins claims—not independent comparative test results in the cited material. Cummins’ X15 announcement provides the details.
When are the next engines expected?
Cummins’ 2026 launch-plan update lays out a phased schedule for other next-generation engines:
Rank #2
- X15 and X10: limited model-year 2027 production planned for January 2027.
- X15: full production expected in the fourth quarter of 2027.
- X10: full production expected in the third quarter of 2027.
- Next-generation B platform: expected in January 2028.
These are planned milestones, not firm delivery dates. Cummins says timing may be affected by OEM launch plans and final emissions rulemaking. See the company’s launch-timing update for its stated schedule.
What could shared architecture mean for fleets?
Cummins says common components and familiar service practices are intended to simplify vehicle integration, parts procurement, technician training and maintenance. Those are expected operational benefits presented by the manufacturer; the cited materials do not establish independent fleet results showing how much time or money operators would save.

For a fleet, the shared platform does not remove the need to choose and support the right fuel system. Fuel availability, vehicle duty cycle, fueling infrastructure, emissions goals and the timing of OEM vehicle offerings all matter. Parts or service commonality should be assessed for the specific engine and vehicle rather than assumed from the HELM name alone.

There is no evidence here for a universal “best” HELM fuel. Cummins’ materials do not provide an independent, apples-to-apples comparison of fuel economy or lifecycle emissions across the variants. A useful evaluation starts with the operation, not just the engine label:
