Demonstrators sought reputational and economic pressure through showroom rallies, boycotts, calls to sell Tesla vehicles and stock, and coordinated demonstrations. The campaign’s March 2025 actions reached locations across the United States and abroad, but available reporting does not establish that it caused a specific change in Tesla sales, Tesla’s share price or Musk’s political influence.
What Tesla Takedown was protesting
The movement presented itself as a peaceful campaign against Musk’s DOGE role and the policies and influence protesters associated with him. Tesla locations became the focus because the company is closely identified with Musk and offers visible public sites for demonstrations.

The campaign’s stated pressure theory was economic as well as symbolic: make Tesla stores harder to ignore, persuade consumers not to buy its vehicles, encourage owners to sell, and urge investors to sell Tesla shares. Boston participant Nathan Phillips described the approach as showing up at showrooms, boycotting Tesla and telling people to “sell your stocks, sell your Teslas.”
How the March 2025 protests unfolded
March 1 national wave
Associated Press reporting said the Tesla Takedown website listed more than 50 demonstrations for March 1, 2025. Events were planned throughout the United States, with additional actions in England, Spain and Portugal. The Washington Post reported that protests had taken place outside at least 90 Tesla shops and charging stations over that weekend, including rallies in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Tucson.

New York drew an estimated 300 protesters at a dealership. AP reported that nine people were taken into custody there. That figure describes custody in New York, not the total number of arrests connected with every event nationwide.
March 29 Global Day of Action
The campaign escalated on March 29 by seeking demonstrations at all 277 Tesla showrooms and service centers in the United States. AP reported crowds ranging from a few dozen to hundreds in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Minnesota and Texas by early afternoon, with later reports of actions in Washington, Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Seattle, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Colorado.

Organizers also hoped to reach more than 230 locations outside the United States. In London, participant Cam Whitten said the aim was to “get loud, make noise, make people aware of the problems that we’re facing.” A planned or targeted location does not necessarily mean a rally occurred there, so the March 29 goal of 277 sites should not be read as a confirmed attendance count.

- Showroom and service-center demonstrations: People gathered outside Tesla properties with signs, chants and speeches to attract customers, employees, media and passersby.
- Consumer boycotts: Organizers urged people not to purchase Tesla vehicles and encouraged existing owners to sell.
- Stock divestment: The campaign called on shareholders to sell Tesla stock as a way to apply financial pressure.
- International coordination: March 1 listings and the March 29 action extended beyond the United States, although the number of completed events varies by location.
Were the protests peaceful, and were there arrests?
Organizers repeatedly emphasized peaceful protest. Some participants were arrested or taken into custody, including the nine people reported in New York on March 1. Arrests can result from alleged trespassing, obstruction or other conduct at an individual event; the available reporting does not provide a single nationwide arrest total for Tesla Takedown.

Police also investigated vehicle fires and vandalism reported amid the broader backlash against Tesla and Musk. Those separate incidents should not be treated as proof that peaceful Tesla Takedown gatherings themselves were violent. Any claim about a particular event requires identifying that event and the conduct involved.

| Action | Locations or reach | Reported crowd information | What the number means |
|---|---|---|---|
| March 1, 2025 | More than 50 demonstrations listed; at least 90 Tesla shops and charging stations reported as protest sites over the weekend | About 300 estimated in New York | Listed events and reported sites are different measures and should not be added together |
| March 29, 2025 | 277 U.S. showrooms and service centers targeted; more than 230 international locations hoped for | From dozens to hundreds in multiple states | The 277 figure was the campaign’s U.S. target, not a verified count of completed rallies |
Did Tesla Takedown hurt Tesla or Elon Musk?
The campaign was designed to create economic and reputational pressure, and it coincided with public scrutiny of Tesla, Musk and DOGE. However, the reporting available for these demonstrations does not provide a controlled estimate of the protests’ independent effect on Tesla sales, its stock price or Musk’s political influence. Market movements and sales changes can have many causes, so contemporaneous pressure should not be presented as a result caused solely by Tesla Takedown.
The White House rejected the idea that demonstrations would change the DOGE effort. Spokesperson Harrison Fields said: “Protests will not deter President Trump and Elon Musk from delivering on the promise to establish DOGE and make the federal government more efficient and more accountable to the hardworking American taxpayers across the country.”
Quick Recap
How to interpret reports about the protests
- Keep March 1 attendance, March 1 listings and the March 29 target of 277 sites as separate figures.
- Distinguish peaceful rallies from arrests, counterprotests and independently reported vandalism or fire investigations.
- Treat calls to boycott, sell vehicles or divest stock as campaign tactics and goals, not proof of a measured financial result.
- Check the date and location before applying a report about one Tesla site to the entire movement.
