Could You Sell Your House and Live in a Motorhome? How to Judge Livable RV Layouts

A motorhome’s bed count does not tell you whether it can replace a house. Compare the exact floorplan, daily routines, cargo capacity, power needs, and vehicle footprint before deciding.

A motorhome can support everyday life, but no sleeping-capacity number or glossy floorplan proves it is a practical replacement for a house. The right choice depends on how you cook, sleep, work, bathe, store belongings, travel, and power the coach—and on whether its size fits where you want to drive and park.

What makes a motorhome livable for everyday use?

Start with routines, not the headline number of beds. A floorplan that works for a weekend may become frustrating when you use its kitchen, bathroom, storage, and sleeping areas every day. Household size matters, as do privacy needs, work arrangements, mobility, pets, and how often you expect to move.

  • Sleep: Check whether beds are permanent or must be converted from a dinette or lounge, and whether the conversion obstructs other activities.
  • Cook: Look at counter space, refrigerator size and access, pantry storage, and whether more than one person can use the galley comfortably.
  • Bathe: Compare a wet bath, where the shower and toilet share the same space, with a more separated bath. Check privacy and whether the layout fits the people using it.
  • Live and work: Consider seating, a usable table or workstation, and whether slideouts are needed to make the parked coach feel spacious.
  • Carry belongings: Verify cargo capacity and storage locations against what you actually plan to bring. Sleeping capacity is not a measure of carrying capacity.
  • Stay powered: Match the electrical system and any lithium or solar equipment to your expected use; the presence of an energy feature does not establish how long a particular household can run appliances off-grid.

These checks describe layout fit, not proof of year-round suitability. The manufacturer pages below provide product specifications and feature descriptions, not independent long-term living tests.

How do motorhome classes affect the trade-off?

Class A coaches tend to offer more room for separated living zones and residential-style fixtures, while Class B vans prioritize a smaller footprint and flexible use of limited space. Those are broad tendencies, not guarantees about every model. REV Group’s FY2022 filing described these class distinctions, but it is dated company-level context rather than a current universal specification: REV Group FY2022 filing.

A larger living area generally comes with a larger vehicle footprint. Evaluate the exact coach against the roads, campsites, parking, and daily driving you expect—not just how roomy it looks when parked.

What do current manufacturer examples show?

These three examples illustrate different layout approaches; they are not a verified list of 29 motorhomes, and manufacturer descriptions are not independent assessments of full-time comfort.

How should you decide whether to replace a house with a motorhome?

  1. Write down a typical day. Identify who needs a bed, bathroom, cooking space, desk, or quiet area, and when those needs overlap.
  2. Walk through the exact floorplan. Test bed conversions, kitchen workflow, bathroom privacy, storage access, and movement through the coach with everyone aboard.
  3. Check the vehicle and payload. Compare length and driving demands with your travel pattern, and verify cargo capacity for passengers, belongings, and equipment on the exact model.
  4. Match power to your habits. List the appliances and devices you expect to use, then confirm the specific coach’s power equipment and any available solar or lithium options.
  5. Review the full ownership picture. Consider purchase and operating costs, maintenance, where you will stay, access to services, storage, and how often you will move. The available manufacturer specifications do not quantify these costs or establish suitability for every household.
  6. Confirm current details before committing. Product equipment, pricing, and availability can change; verify the exact floorplan with Winnebago and a dealer.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
