Corvette ZR1X vs. Ford Mustang GTD: What Happened in MotorTrend’s Drag Race—and What the 2,031-HP Venom F5 Has to Do With It

The 2,031-hp Hennessey Venom F5 Evolution was not in MotorTrend’s ZR1X–Mustang GTD drag race. Lucid won the quarter-mile; Czinger won the half-mile.

The 2,031-hp car is Hennessey’s Venom F5 Evolution, but it did not enter the documented drag race between the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X and Ford Mustang GTD. MotorTrend’s July 2026 runway event listed nine cars, with power outputs ranging from 510 to 1,250 hp; the Venom F5 was not among them. Lucid won the quarter-mile, while the Czinger 21C won the half-mile.

Did a 2,031-hp Hennessey race the ZR1X and Mustang GTD?

No—not in the MotorTrend event described in its July 1, 2026 report. The nine-car field included the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X and Ford Mustang GTD, but not a Hennessey Venom F5. MotorTrend described the field’s output range as 510 to 1,250 hp, so the 2,031-hp figure belongs to a separate story, not a late-arriving race entrant. MotorTrend’s event report covers the race and its field.

The likely source of the “2,031-hp monster” framing is the Venom F5 Evolution. In an April 16, 2025 release, Hennessey Special Vehicles described the Texas-built hypercar and attributed 2,031 horsepower to its engine. That is the manufacturer’s published output claim; it does not establish a race appearance. Hennessey’s release identifies the car and its claimed output.

Who won the quarter-mile and half-mile?

The winner changed with the distance. Lucid Air Sapphire took the quarter-mile, with the Czinger 21C second and the ZR1X following. In the half-mile, the Czinger won in 14.40 seconds at 187.9 mph; Lucid finished 0.10 second behind, and the ZR1X recorded 14.70 seconds. These are results from MotorTrend’s specific test, not universal rankings of each model.

Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X Third; MotorTrend’s report does not state a time here. 14.70 seconds; MotorTrend’s report places it behind Lucid and Czinger.
Ford Mustang GTD 10.47 seconds at 135 mph, fifth, according to Ford Authority’s event coverage. 16.50 seconds at 161.7 mph, according to MotorTrend; Ford Authority reports nearly 162 mph and fourth place.

MotorTrend writer Eric Tingwall summarized the quarter-mile lead order: “The first three positions held through the quarter mile, where Lucid claimed the win.” The quote refers to the event’s quarter-mile result, not the half-mile finish. MotorTrend, July 1, 2026, is the primary account; Ford Authority’s July 3 coverage reports the GTD’s quarter-mile figure, while GM Authority’s July 3 coverage reports the ZR1X half-mile result.

Why the GTD’s position changed with distance

The Mustang GTD was slower off the line than the all-wheel-drive cars, then made up ground: it passed the Tesla Model 3 Performance and Tesla Cybertruck Beast before the Rivian R1T Quad finished just ahead in the quarter-mile. In the half-mile, the GTD passed the Rivian after the truck reached its speed governor. The order therefore reflected launch, traction, distance and a speed limit—not horsepower alone.

What setup shaped this particular test?

MotorTrend made configuration changes for the straight-line runs. It used low-drag versions of the Czinger 21C and ZR1X, returned the Lucid to Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS tires after it had been on street tires, and fitted the Mustang GTD with fresh Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 Rs. Those choices are part of the context for the published results; the report does not isolate how much any one change affected a finishing position.

The event took place on the runway at March Air Reserve Base in California, after four days of road and track driving. Its nine vehicles were the Czinger 21C, Corvette ZR1X, Lucid Air Sapphire, Mustang GTD, Rivian R1T Quad, Tesla Cybertruck Beast, Tesla Model 3 Performance, Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and Fox Factory Jeep Wrangler Commando 392. The published 1,250-hp ceiling applies to that field as described by MotorTrend, not to the absent Venom F5 Evolution.

How to read the headline’s “steals the glory” claim

The phrase describes an unverified framing, not a result in MotorTrend’s documented race. The supported account is narrower: the ZR1X and GTD competed in a nine-car event; Lucid won the quarter-mile; Czinger won the half-mile; and Hennessey separately published a 2,031-hp output claim for the Venom F5 Evolution. No source cited here connects that Hennessey car to the event.
