For most road and touring use, buy the better-maintained, better-equipped C7 Stingray at the better price. Choose a Grand Sport if you will use its wider tires, broader footprint and larger brakes—and have budgeted for the related consumables. Both 2019 versions use the naturally aspirated 6.2-liter LT1 V8, so the Grand Sport’s main advantage is its chassis and performance hardware, not a different engine. Compare the actual car’s year, options, condition and configuration rather than relying on its badge.
What separates a C7 Grand Sport from a Stingray?
The Grand Sport is a wider-bodied, more track-oriented version of the C7 Corvette Stingray. In the 2019 Chevrolet catalog, both trims use the 6.2-liter LT1 V8. The Grand Sport’s case rests chiefly on its wider tire fitment and more substantial brake hardware. A Stingray can also be equipped with the Z51 Performance Package, so compare the cars’ actual equipment rather than treating every Stingray as a base model.

That distinction matters when shopping used. The Grand Sport badge identifies a trim, but it does not tell you whether the car has steel or optional carbon-ceramic brakes, whether its wheels and tires are still in their factory configuration, or how its previous owner maintained it. A well-equipped Stingray may be a closer comparison to a Grand Sport than a base Stingray is. Start with the specific examples and their records, not a general assumption that one trim is automatically the better buy.
The specifications below are for 2019 catalog equipment, not a guarantee of what is fitted to a particular used car. C7 equipment and options vary by year, and owners may have changed wheels, tires or brakes. Verify the model year, factory options and current configuration before using these figures to judge a candidate. A 2019 catalog entry is not proof of the equipment on an earlier C7.

2019 Stingray vs. Grand Sport specifications
| Specification | Stingray | Grand Sport |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 6.2-liter LT1 V8 | 6.2-liter LT1 V8 |
| Catalog horsepower and torque | 455 hp and 460 lb-ft standard; 460 hp and 465 lb-ft with available performance exhaust or Z51 Performance Package | 460 hp and 465 lb-ft |
| Overall width | 73.9 inches | 77.4 inches |
| Brake hardware | Brembo four-piston calipers; larger slotted front rotors available with Z51 | Brembo six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers with steel rotors; listed rotor diameters are 14.6 inches front and 14.4 inches rear. Carbon-ceramic brakes were available. |
| Listed Michelin Pilot Super Sport ZP summer-only tire sizes | 245/35ZR19 front; 285/30ZR20 rear | 285/30ZR19 front; 335/25ZR20 rear |
Specifications are from the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette catalog hosted by CorvSport. The output figures show why a badge-only comparison can mislead: a Stingray with Z51 or the available performance exhaust matches the Grand Sport’s listed 2019 output. That does not make the cars otherwise equivalent; their widths, tire sizes and brake equipment differ.
The width difference is 3.5 inches in the catalog figures. It is a useful shorthand for the Grand Sport’s broader footprint, but it should not be mistaken for a complete description of how an individual car will drive. The right question for a used buyer is whether that broader setup and the related hardware fit the way the car will actually be used. If the car is primarily a road and touring vehicle, do not pay for hardware you do not value simply because it belongs to the more specialized trim.
Likewise, equal listed horsepower and torque do not mean the two configurations are interchangeable. The Grand Sport differentiates itself through its body, tire fitment and brake package, not by replacing the LT1 with the Z06’s supercharged LT4. A Stingray’s equipment may vary with options, so confirm the specific package and exhaust rather than comparing a catalog base figure with a car advertised by its highest possible output.
Which one should you buy?
Choose a Stingray for road and touring use
A Stingray is a sensible default if you mainly drive on public roads, want a touring car, or value a particular example’s condition and price over the Grand Sport’s wider footprint and brake hardware. Its narrower listed tire sizes may also suit a buyer who does not need the Grand Sport’s wider fitment. Do not assume a Stingray is lightly equipped: check whether it has Z51 and which brakes, exhaust, wheels and other options are actually present.
Think of the Stingray as the starting point for a condition-first search, not as a guarantee of lower costs or lesser performance. A Stingray with a package or exhaust that brings its catalog output to 460 hp and 465 lb-ft has the same listed power and torque as the 2019 Grand Sport. That makes inspection and equipment comparison more important, not less. If the Stingray has the features you want and its history is stronger, it can be the more sensible purchase regardless of which trim sounds more special.
For a road-oriented buyer, also consider how often the car will be driven in the climate and conditions where it lives. The listed tires are summer-only, and Chevrolet warns against using them in winter conditions. Whatever trim you choose, a tire setup must suit the climate and be an approved combination. A car that needs an immediate tire change should be evaluated with that work included in its total budget.
Choose a Grand Sport for its hardware, not its badge alone
The Grand Sport is the stronger fit if you value its wider body and tires, larger brakes and track-oriented hardware, and expect to make use of them. It retains the naturally aspirated LT1 rather than using the supercharged LT4 found in the Z06. The trim name alone does not guarantee a better used car or better value; condition, configuration and price still matter.

Budget for the configuration that is actually installed. Grand Sport tire sizes are wider than the listed Stingray sizes, and the car’s larger brakes or optional carbon-ceramic system can materially affect consumable costs. No current official US retail listing establishes a universal replacement price or a fixed cost difference between trims, so get current quotes for the exact tire and brake setup rather than relying on a generic estimate.
Compare the cars on these points
- Use: Is the car mainly for road and touring, or will you do frequent performance driving? The answer helps establish whether the Grand Sport’s wider footprint and larger brakes are useful to you.
- Year and factory package: Which model year is it, and does the Stingray have Z51 or other relevant options? Use year-specific records; do not apply 2019 specifications automatically to an earlier car.
- Transmission and body style: Does the individual car match your preference, and how does its configuration affect the comparison? Record the actual transmission and body style rather than treating trim as a complete description of the vehicle.
- Brakes: Identify steel or carbon-ceramic hardware, then assess condition and likely service needs. A Grand Sport badge alone does not tell you which brake system is installed.
- Tires and wheels: Confirm size, age, condition and fitment. Factory-looking appearance is not proof of original equipment, and previous owners may have changed the setup.
- History and maintenance: Review records, diagnostic information and structural condition rather than relying on trim identity or appearance.
- Total budget: Include purchase price plus any tires, brakes, fluids, repairs or other recommissioning the specific car needs. Do not assume an advertised price captures immediate ownership costs.
There is no universal Grand Sport price premium or resale advantage established here. Judge the asking price against the condition, equipment and likely work on the particular cars you are considering. A fair comparison puts two individual cars side by side, including what each needs before it is ready for your use.
How to inspect a used C7 before buying
1. Establish the car’s identity and equipment
Build a year-specific equipment record for each candidate, covering the engine, transmission, axle, brake package, suspension, wheels, tires, seats, roof or convertible equipment, cameras, electronics and trim. Compare the physical car with primary records: appearance parts and badges alone cannot establish factory identity. If trim identity materially affects the asking price, seek independent verification from a marque specialist.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This step is especially useful when comparing cars that have been modified or repaired. The equipment record creates a checklist of what the car is supposed to have, while the physical inspection shows what is on it now. Note discrepancies rather than assuming they are harmless or that every visible component is factory-original. If a seller’s description claims a package or brake system that would materially affect value, verify it with appropriate records before using that claim in your price comparison.
Record the model year precisely. The 2019 catalog gives a useful apples-to-apples snapshot for that year, but it does not settle the specifications of another model year. Keep year, factory options and current configuration together in your notes so that a correct catalog fact does not become an incorrect claim about the car in front of you.
2. Reconcile the paperwork and history
Review the title and VIN alongside registrations, inspection and emissions records, tire dates and invoices. A vehicle-history report can identify recorded events, but it cannot prove that no collision or repair occurred. TheVette Editorial Desk’s C7 buyer’s guide, updated August 7, 2026, makes that distinction explicit.
Use the report as one source of evidence, not as a clean bill of health. Compare its recorded events with the paperwork and the physical condition of the vehicle. Invoices can help establish what work was performed and when, while gaps or inconsistencies are reasons to ask follow-up questions. The report’s limitations mean an apparently quiet history still needs an inspection; it cannot rule out an unrecorded incident or repair.

Track use by itself is not proof of abuse; documented preparation and maintenance help put it in context. Long periods of storage or a history of overheating are not conclusions on their own, either, but they are relevant details to discuss with the seller and have assessed as part of the individual car’s condition.

3. Scan before clearing codes or disconnecting the battery
Have accessible vehicle modules scanned before anyone clears codes or disconnects the battery. Save current and history codes, communication status and readiness data. A general OBD-II scan tool can help with an initial check, but it does not replace an appropriate professional scan or a specialist’s interpretation.
The order matters: a scan performed after codes have been cleared may not preserve the same diagnostic picture. Ask for the current information to be saved before taking steps that could erase it, and retain the results with the car’s other inspection notes. A scan tool is an aid, not a verdict. A result needs context, and a general tool should not be represented as a substitute for access to the relevant modules or professional diagnosis.
4. Inspect the structure and low-mounted parts
Inspect the frame and cradle areas, suspension pickup points, central tunnel, floors, jacking points, bumper reinforcements, body attachments and underbody panels. Look for damage or distortion, non-factory welds, signs of corrosion and fresh coatings that obscure unclear repairs. Splitters, deflectors, coolers and undertrays sit low and may have taken impacts. Aluminum and composite structural repairs call for appropriate expertise, so have questionable areas assessed by someone qualified to evaluate them.

Do not limit the inspection to obvious exterior panels. The underbody areas listed above can reveal damage or repairs that are not apparent from a walk-around. Fresh coating may make an area look tidy while also making its previous condition harder to judge, so ask what it covers and why it was applied. If the answer is unclear, seek a closer assessment rather than treating the coating as evidence of a sound repair.
Low-mounted parts deserve separate attention because their position makes them vulnerable to impacts. Check splitters, deflectors, coolers and undertrays for damage, and consider whether a damaged part is merely a replaceable component or could point to a harder impact. Do not make that judgment from appearance alone; structural and composite concerns should be handled by someone with the right expertise.
5. Budget for the car’s actual condition and configuration
Estimate the cost of any needed tires, brakes, dampers, fluids, insurance, fuel, alignment, clutch or automatic service and cooling maintenance. The Grand Sport’s wider wheels, specialized tires and larger brakes can materially affect consumable costs; carbon-ceramic brakes can change brake-related costs further. Check which system is installed instead of estimating from the trim badge. The Z06’s supercharger-related work is not a Grand Sport or Stingray maintenance item: both trims in the 2019 comparison use the LT1.
Build that estimate around inspection findings, not a generic trim-level rule. One car may need tires while another may need brakes or fluids; the listed categories warrant consideration but no universal dollar amount is established. Confirm the tire sizes and brake type first, then obtain current quotes for the actual fitment and service required. Add insurance, fuel, alignment and relevant transmission service to the purchase calculation so that the comparison reflects more than the asking price.
For a Grand Sport, do not forget to distinguish the steel-brake setup from the available carbon-ceramic system before making a brake budget. For either trim, ask whether the existing tires are an approved combination and whether their age and condition make replacement a near-term need. A car that initially appears to cost less may not remain the less expensive choice once required recommissioning is included.

Check tire fitment and climate suitability
The 2019 catalog’s listed Michelin Pilot Super Sport ZP sizes are summer-only tires, not a promise that every used car still has them. Verify the actual wheels and tire sizes, since prior owners may have changed them, and use GM-approved tire and wheel combinations. The catalog warns: “Do not use summer-only tires in winter conditions, as it would adversely affect vehicle safety, performance and durability.” This is particularly important when considering the Grand Sport’s listed 335/25ZR20 rear tires: confirm the correct fitment and whether the tire type suits your climate and intended use.
Read the tire markings on the car rather than assuming that the catalog sizes are still fitted. The 2019 Stingray listing is 245/35ZR19 at the front and 285/30ZR20 at the rear; the Grand Sport listing is 285/30ZR19 front and 335/25ZR20 rear. These figures help you identify the catalog comparison, but they are not a substitute for checking the candidate’s actual wheels and tires. Owners may have changed either, and the catalog says to use GM-approved tire and wheel combinations.
Replacement tires are a practical shopping point, especially for a Grand Sport’s listed sizes, but do not choose by size alone. Confirm model year, wheel configuration and approved fitment, and consider whether a summer-only tire is appropriate for the climate where you will drive. Chevrolet’s warning is direct: summer-only tires should not be used in winter conditions because safety, performance and durability would be adversely affected.

The catalog values are manufacturer specifications, not current measurements of a used car or estimates of replacement cost. Tire availability and costs depend on the market and the exact fitment; confirm those details before committing to a purchase. A seller’s current setup may also differ from factory catalog fitment, so verify rather than assuming that a listed size is what is on the car.
Is the Grand Sport worth it over the Stingray?
It can be worth it if the specific Grand Sport’s wider footprint, larger brakes and track-oriented hardware match your intended use, and if its condition and price make sense after budgeting for its actual consumables. If you mainly want a road or touring Corvette, a well-maintained Stingray with suitable equipment may be the more rational choice. The available specifications do not prove that every Grand Sport commands a certain premium or delivers better resale value, so make the decision at the level of the individual cars.
Before paying more for a trim designation, verify that the car is what the seller says it is, confirm its equipment against year-specific records, and assess its repair and maintenance history. Then compare total purchase-plus-recommissioning needs. That process is more reliable than assuming that one badge guarantees a better example, lower running costs or a better fit for your driving.
Bottom line: buy the example that fits your use
A well-maintained Stingray—especially one with the equipment you want—can be the more rational road car. The Grand Sport earns its place when its wider footprint and larger brakes matter to your driving and you are comfortable with the associated consumables. In either case, prioritize verified configuration, service and repair history, structural condition, and a realistic purchase-plus-recommissioning budget over the trim badge.

Is the Grand Sport worth it over the Stingray?
It may be worth it if you will use its wider footprint, larger brakes and track-oriented hardware and have budgeted for the installed tires and brakes. For mostly road and touring use, a well-maintained, suitably equipped Stingray can be the more sensible buy. Compare individual condition, equipment and price; there is no universal premium established here.
Does the C7 Grand Sport have a different engine from the Stingray?
The 2019 catalog lists the 6.2-liter LT1 V8 in both trims. The Grand Sport’s main distinction is its chassis and performance hardware, not the supercharged LT4 used in the Z06.
Are C7 Grand Sport tires more expensive than Stingray tires?
The 2019 catalog lists wider Grand Sport sizes—285/30ZR19 front and 335/25ZR20 rear—than the listed Stingray sizes. No current official US retail replacement-price listing is published, so check the exact installed fitment and get current quotes before buying.
Can I drive a C7 with summer-only tires in winter?
Chevrolet’s 2019 catalog warns not to use summer-only tires in winter conditions because safety, performance and durability would be adversely affected. Confirm the tire type on the specific car and choose a GM-approved wheel and tire combination suitable for your climate.
Does a clean vehicle-history report prove a Corvette has never been damaged?
No. A vehicle-history report can identify recorded events, but it cannot prove that no collision or repair occurred. Review records and inspect the car’s structure, underbody and repair areas; use qualified expertise if aluminum or composite structural repairs are in question.
Should I avoid a C7 that has been used on track?
Not based on track use alone. Ask about preparation, maintenance, repairs and related history, and assess the actual car. Documented preparation and maintenance help put track use in context.
The Bottom Line
Buy the Stingray if it best fits road use and wins on condition, equipment and total cost. Choose the Grand Sport when its wider fitment and larger brakes are worth having—and its specific tires, brakes and history check out.
