Consumer Reports’ 2025 reliability analysis found that conventional hybrids had 15 percent fewer reported problems on average than gas-only vehicles for model years 2023–2025. That is a survey-based category average—not a guarantee about any particular car. Consumer Reports analyzed plug-in hybrids separately, and those averaged about 80 percent more problems than gas-only cars.
What Consumer Reports found
The 15 percent difference compares reported problems for conventional hybrids with those for gas-only vehicles in Consumer Reports’ analysis of model years 2023–2025. Consumer Reports defines conventional hybrids as vehicles with a gasoline engine, an electric motor, and a battery. They do not need to be plugged in.
The finding is specific to the 2025 survey release and its vehicle-year range. The previous year’s comparison found hybrids had about the same problem rate as internal-combustion-only cars, so the two results should not be combined into a single trend or treated as a fixed advantage. Consumer Reports’ 2024 announcement describes that earlier comparison.
Conventional hybrids are not plug-in hybrids
A conventional hybrid uses its gasoline engine, electric motor, and battery together without requiring external charging. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has a charging port and can travel some distance on electricity alone. That added capability makes PHEVs a separate category in the Consumer Reports comparison—not a synonym for ordinary hybrids.

In the same 2025 analysis, PHEVs and fully electric vehicles averaged about 80 percent more reported problems than gas-only cars. Those category averages do not establish that every PHEV or EV is less reliable than every gas-only model; they describe reported problems across the categories Consumer Reports analyzed.
How Consumer Reports measures reliability
Consumer Reports bases its reliability ratings on member surveys. In its 2025 survey, it received responses on about 380,000 vehicles, spanning model years 2000–2025 and a few early 2026 vehicles. The current powertrain comparison focuses on model years 2023–2025. Owners report problems they experienced during the preceding 12 months, across as many as 20 areas ranging from trim and interior issues to major powertrain and electrical faults.

This is observational owner-reported data, not a controlled experiment comparing otherwise identical cars with and without hybrid systems. The result does not prove that hybrid engineering itself caused the lower average. Consumer Reports points to factors such as the maturity of established hybrid systems and the reliability of the underlying models; its 2025 analysis notes that many highly rated hybrids are based on models that were already reliable. Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports’ senior director of auto testing, said: “By comparison, hybrids have been around for nearly three decades, and the technology is tried and true.” Consumer Reports’ explanation of how hybrid cars work also describes how hybrids use energy that would otherwise be wasted.

A category average can conceal large differences among individual vehicles. In Consumer Reports’ 2025 survey, under 1 percent of owners of 2024 Toyota Camry Hybrids reported a problem, compared with 35 percent of owners of 2024 Ford Escape Hybrids. These figures illustrate variation in that survey; they are not predictions that a future owner of either model will or will not have trouble. Consumer Reports also notes that owners can report no problems even when their vehicle’s model ranks poorly.

Consumer Reports named the Ford F-150 Hybrid, Kia Carnival Hybrid, and Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid among strong reliability performers in their respective categories in its 2026 survey. That recognition is useful context, but it does not replace checking the model-year history for the vehicle you are considering—especially when a model has been redesigned or has adopted new technology.

How to use the finding when shopping
- Check the precise model and model year. Look for Consumer Reports’ model-level reliability history and whether it has enough survey responses to support a rating.
- Confirm the powertrain type. Decide whether a conventional hybrid meets your needs or whether a PHEV’s charging and electric-only range are worth considering as a distinct category.
- Account for design changes. A newly redesigned vehicle or a new powertrain may have less established reliability history than a long-running, refined system.
- Compare the whole ownership decision. Weigh reliability alongside fuel economy, purchase price, driving patterns, and model-specific ownership costs. The survey does not show that a hybrid will save every buyer money.
