Yes—Citroën has confirmed it intends to add a new electric model inspired by the 2CV. It is not the unchanged historic car returning to production, and key details such as range, battery size and final price have not been announced. Citroën said it would share more at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026; as of 4 October, that presentation is still ahead.

In an announcement on 22 May 2026, Citroën said a new model inspired by the 2CV is planned. The company describes it as electric and says the design brief emphasizes affordability, light weight, practicality, versatility and distinctive character. Those are the manufacturer’s stated aims, not verified specifications or performance results. Citroën’s announcement positions the project as an accessible reinterpretation for contemporary mobility needs, including urban regulations.
Citroën CEO Xavier Chardon framed the ambition in terms of the original car’s purpose: “The original 2 CV was never created to become an icon. It became one because it gave people freedom.” He said the new model should carry that spirit forward by rethinking simplicity and accessibility for today.

Citroën said it would share more at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026. On 4 October 2026, that promised presentation had not yet taken place, so those unanswered questions remain open.
Reported price and production timing
Autocar reported on 21 May 2026 that the car could have a £15,000 target price and that production was expected to begin in 2028 at Stellantis’s Pomigliano plant in Italy, alongside a Fiat small car. These are media-reported plans and expectations, not confirmed final pricing, production timing or specifications from Citroën. The report also describes the teaser as a modern interpretation of the original 2CV’s rounded, “snail-shaped” silhouette.

How to understand “the 2CV is coming back”
The phrase refers to a future model inspired by the classic, not a restart of production for the historic 2CV unchanged. Whether the finished car delivers on those ambitions will depend on details not yet published, including usable range, interior space, price and the production model’s equipment.
Citroën’s heritage material places the original 2CV among the marque’s notable models and describes its broader accessibility ambition. It also references a miniature of the classic car through the Citroën lifestyle boutique; that is a collectible tied to the historic 2CV, not evidence of a miniature of the unreleased electric model.

When Citroën provides more information, the most useful tests of its stated brief will be whether the car is genuinely affordable, straightforward to use as an EV, practical for everyday needs and distinctive without relying only on nostalgia.
