But export growth is not the same as overseas production, and a forecast about 2035 is not a measure of today’s market. The evidence points to a rapid international push, with several different routes and important limits on what the headline figures prove.
What the evidence says about the rise
Three measures help explain the scale and pace: production in China, exports from China, and manufacturing capacity owned by Chinese firms overseas. They describe different things, so they should not be combined into a single measure of global sales.
- China’s production base is large. The IEA reported that China accounted for more than 70% of global electric-car production in 2024. This is a figure for production in China, not a share attributable only to Chinese-owned brands. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2025
- Exports accelerated. Chinese electric-car exports more than doubled in Q1 2026 compared with Q1 2025, according to the IEA. That comparison indicates a fast increase over the period; it does not by itself establish how durable the growth will be. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026 executive summary
- Overseas capacity is growing, but is much smaller than capacity in China. The IEA estimated Chinese firms’ overseas manufacturing capacity for internal-combustion-engine and electric vehicles at about 1.7 million vehicles per year in 2025, compared with 29 million vehicles per year in China. How Chinese EV makers are expanding abroad
Exports are one route: manufacturers can ship vehicles made in China into overseas markets. Another is establishing or using manufacturing capacity outside China. Companies also pursue overseas launches in different ways. Associated Press reporting describes varied approaches, including exports and overseas launches, rather than one common expansion blueprint. Those examples show that expansion is not a single step from domestic sales to local production. A company can enter a market through exports without operating a local factory, while overseas capacity can support manufacturing without proving that a plant is running at its estimated maximum. Announcements, capacity estimates, production and sales should therefore be treated as separate milestones.

Where the export picture is shifting
Europe remains important, but its relative weight in the value of Chinese exports has declined. The IEA says Europe represented around 40% of total Chinese export value in 2025, while emerging markets grew in importance. This is a share of export value—not a share of exported vehicle units, all Chinese EV sales, or the European market. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026: Manufacturing and trade
The distinction matters because export value can change with prices and the mix of vehicles shipped, not only with the number of cars. The IEA’s statistic supports the conclusion that export destinations are shifting in economic weight; it does not, on its own, quantify the change in vehicle volumes by destination.

What the 2035 projection does—and does not—mean
The IEA projects that more than one in four electric cars sold in advanced economies could be made in China by 2035. This is a forward-looking projection, not an observed current share or a guarantee. It concerns where cars are made, which is distinct from the nationality of the brand selling them. The forecast signals that China-based manufacturing could remain significant in advanced economies even as firms expand production abroad. It should be read as a possible outcome under the IEA’s outlook, not as proof that today’s export growth will continue at the same pace or that every announced overseas project will reach full output.

What these figures cannot establish
Industry-wide production and export numbers do not answer which individual automaker is strongest in a particular country. The cited reporting and IEA figures do not provide a comparable, source-backed ranking of Chinese makers by profitability, vehicle quality, after-sales support or brand acceptance across overseas markets. Those questions require matched comparisons by market, time period and metric.
Nor does rapid export growth guarantee durable success. A company’s ability to turn shipments or factory capacity into sustained overseas sales is a separate question from the size of China’s manufacturing base. The evidence supports a rapid rise in international activity; it does not establish the eventual winners or how evenly that rise will translate into local production and customer demand.
