Several Chinese automakers are positioned to compete more aggressively overseas in 2026, but there is no single global “winner,” and expansion does not mean a model is available in your country. BYD has the largest reported overseas scale among the companies covered here; Geely is expanding a multi-brand portfolio and service network; XPENG is pushing into more markets; and Changan has set ambitious longer-term targets. How much any of them changes a local market will depend on tariffs, local assembly, actual model availability and the support buyers can get after purchase.
Why Chinese EV makers have momentum
China’s manufacturing and export scale gives its automakers a strong platform for international growth. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that China produced 16 million electric cars in 2025—around three-quarters of global production—and exported more than 2.5 million, more than double the previous year. Electric models made up over 35% of China’s car exports in 2025, compared with about 20% in 2024.
The overseas mix is changing, too: four in five Chinese-made electric cars sold overseas in 2025 came from Chinese manufacturers, up from fewer than two in five in 2021, according to the IEA. Outside Europe and the United States, Chinese imports accounted for 55% of electric-car sales in 2025. In many countries in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, they supplied more than 80% of electric cars.
Those figures describe different things: China’s share of production, exports, overseas sales and particular destination markets. They show why Chinese brands matter, not that they have taken over every market. In India and Viet Nam, for example, local manufacturers supplied most electric-car demand, the IEA says.

Which Chinese brands are expanding overseas?
The figures below are company-reported and are not a like-for-like ranking. Companies may define overseas sales, deliveries and vehicle categories differently; periods also vary. Treat completed sales as reported performance, and announced rollouts or targets as plans rather than results.

BYD’s sales figures and regional descriptions come from BYD’s 2026 reporting; Geely’s from Geely Auto Group’s 2026 reporting; XPENG’s from XPENG Inc.’s 2026 reporting; and Changan’s targets from Global CHANGAN’s 2026 strategy announcement. The IEA reports that ten major Chinese automakers announced combined overseas sales targets exceeding 7 million for 2026. That is a sum of company targets, not an independent forecast or a sales result.
BYD and DENZA: scale plus a premium push
BYD’s overseas results make it a major force in the current expansion, while its product mix and local presence will still vary by country. In April 2026, BYD launched DENZA internationally, naming the Z9GT shooting brake and D9 DM-i MPV as its first overseas models. DENZA said it aimed to reach more than 30 European countries and open more than 150 retail stores by year-end 2026. It also announced plans for 6,000 FLASH Charging stations outside China within 12 months, including 3,000 in Europe. These are company plans, not confirmed completed rollouts.

DENZA describes its premium positioning as “Technology Drives Elegance.” That is the brand’s positioning language, not independent evidence of product performance or ownership quality.

Geely, Lynk & Co and Zeekr: a portfolio approach
Geely Auto’s overseas total covers its international business, so it should not be read as sales by the Geely-badged vehicles alone. The company says Geely, Lynk & Co and Zeekr are all expanding internationally. Its reported service outlets and parts-distribution facilities provide a useful signal of support infrastructure, but they do not establish coverage in every country or for every model.
Geely’s 2025 results also show different stages of localization. It said its Indonesian plant had begun mass production of the EX5 and EX5 EM-i. It reported that a Renault partnership planned localized EX5 EM-i production in Brazil in the second half of 2026; that was a plan, not confirmation of production having started. By November 2025, Geely said Zeekr had entered more than 50 countries and regions and Lynk & Co operated over 200 stores in 55 markets.

XPENG: a wider rollout, with future plans still to prove
XPENG reported 429,445 total deliveries in 2025, including 45,008 overseas vehicles. In August 2026, it said the L03 global model would launch across 65 countries and regions during the year. It also announced an Australian plan involving five new models in the second half of 2026 and said global rollout of its NGP system would begin in 2027. Those announcements describe intended expansion; they do not confirm that every model or system is already available or independently validate its performance.
Changan: long-range targets, not current scale
Changan’s April 2026 strategy sets 2030 targets that include 1.5 million overseas vehicle sales, 2.4 million NEV sales and RMB 600 billion in revenue. The targets indicate the scale of the company’s ambition, but they are not a measure of its current international sales. Chairman Zhu Huarong framed the strategy as “co development and shared prosperity” with industry partners—a statement of company intent, not an independent assessment of likely results.
What the expansion means in your country
A country or region count tells you where a company says it has a presence; it does not tell you that a specific car is on sale locally, that deliveries have begun, or that parts and repairs are easy to obtain. Check the individual model and its local distributor, not just the brand’s global map.

- Confirm the exact model and powertrain. BEV means battery electric vehicle; PHEV means plug-in hybrid. NEV is a broader category used in China and can include both. A company’s NEV total is not interchangeable with BEV sales.
- Check local retail and after-sales support. Verify authorized sales and service locations, parts availability, warranty terms and who handles repairs in your country. A global network statistic is not proof of local coverage.
- Ask whether the car is imported or locally built. Local production and partnerships can affect availability, supply and exposure to import duties, but an announced factory or production plan is not the same as operating capacity.
- Check charging compatibility and access. For a home charger, confirm connector compatibility, local voltage and current, installation requirements and support for your vehicle. Public charging access and network plans also vary by market.
How tariffs and trade policy could change the picture
International growth is not a straight-line projection. The IEA says exports face potential pressure from accumulated overseas inventory and policy changes. China introduced export licenses for BEVs in January 2026. Some Southeast Asian import-duty waivers expired, while Brazil and Mexico introduced new duties on electric-car imports.
Inventory is another variable: figures reported by China’s Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) showed 2025 exports exceeding overseas sales by more than 25%. The IEA says this suggests a significant rise in overseas inventories. That does not establish that every brand or market has excess stock, but it is a reason to distinguish vehicles shipped from vehicles sold to buyers.
At the same time, IEA data show Chinese electric-car exports more than doubled in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. That early-year acceleration and the headwinds above point in different directions; neither determines the full-year outcome. The effects will vary with each market’s trade rules, inventory, local assembly incentives and consumer demand.

Market-share statistics need the right denominator. The IEA says China accounted for almost 60% of electric-car imports into the European Union in 2025, but those imports represented less than 20% of EU electric-car demand. The first figure is a share of imports; the second is a share of overall demand. They should not be read as equivalent claims about market dominance.
How to judge whether a brand is ready for buyers
Overseas expansion is most useful to shoppers when it produces a specific model they can buy, supported by a dependable local ownership system. Assess a brand in this order:
- Availability: Is the named model on sale in your country now, with confirmed local specifications and delivery timing?
- Support: Is there an authorized service location within practical reach, and can the distributor confirm parts supply and warranty coverage?
- Powertrain and charging: Is it a BEV or PHEV, and does its charging hardware work with local infrastructure and home-installation conditions?
- Supply and policy: Is the vehicle imported or locally assembled, and what duties, incentives or regulatory rules apply in your market?
- Evidence quality: Separate reported sales and operating facilities from launch announcements, country targets and future production plans.
These checks are more useful than choosing a universal “best” Chinese EV brand from global sales totals. Company releases establish what each automaker reports or intends; the IEA provides broader production and trade context. Neither provides a country-by-country guarantee of model availability, comparative reliability or service quality.
