China’s 240-Tonne Electric Mine Trucks: What’s Planned and What’s Already Running

Fortescue’s planned 300–400-truck fleet is slated for phased deliveries from 2028 to 2030. China’s Yimin mine has a separate 100-truck autonomous electric deployment.

The headline’s 240-tonne fleet is Fortescue’s plan for 300–400 zero-emissions mine haul trucks, with phased deliveries expected from 2028 to 2030—not a fleet already in service. XCMG is expected to supply up to half and Liebherr at least the other half. Separately, 100 autonomous electric trucks began operating at China’s Yimin Open-Pit Mine in 2025; that deployment is not identified as the same fleet.

What does the 240-tonne electric truck fleet refer to?

It refers to Fortescue’s planned procurement of 300–400 zero-emissions haul trucks announced in 2025. The company expects deliveries in phases from 2028 through 2030. XCMG is expected to provide up to half of the planned fleet, while Liebherr is expected to provide at least the other half. These are announced plans and supplier expectations, not evidence that all those trucks have been delivered or are operating.

Fortescue and Liebherr had also announced an arrangement in 2024 involving approximately 360 Liebherr T 264 trucks. That announcement described onsite validation of the battery-electric T 264 as due to begin at the end of 2025. This earlier figure and schedule are distinct from the 2025 announcement of a planned 300–400-truck fleet; the announcements do not establish that the figures describe separate fleets or explain precisely how they relate. Fortescue–Liebherr partnership announcement.

Are the trucks already operating?

Fortescue’s own electric truck

Fortescue says it has designed, built and trialled its own 240-tonne battery-electric haul truck and that it is entering service. The company’s announcement is evidence of its stated vehicle and deployment status; it does not independently establish fleet-wide results or confirm that the larger planned procurement has been completed. The separate Yimin deployment in China

Huawei announced that 100 Huaneng Ruichi autonomous electric trucks entered operation at China Huaneng’s Yimin Open-Pit Mine in May 2025. Huawei, China Huaneng, XCMG and State Grid Smart Internet of Vehicles were named as project participants. This is an operational Chinese electric-mine-truck deployment, but the announcement does not identify it as Fortescue’s planned 240-tonne fleet. Huawei’s Yimin deployment announcement.

Who is supplying the planned Fortescue fleet?

Supplier Role in the 2025 plan What is established
XCMG Expected to supply up to half Fortescue’s stated supplier expectation; the announcement does not give a final truck count for XCMG.
Liebherr Expected to supply at least the other half Fortescue’s stated supplier expectation. A 2024 Fortescue–Liebherr announcement separately discussed approximately 360 T 264 trucks.

The 2025 announcement sets out a 300–400-truck total and phased deliveries planned for 2028–2030. The share descriptions are expectations, not a published final allocation. Fortescue’s fleet announcement.

How will electric mine trucks recharge?

For its own 240-tonne truck, Fortescue describes mine-scale fast charging as part of the deployment. In 2026, the company said its 6 MW chargers can recharge the trucks in under 30 minutes. That is Fortescue’s stated capability; the announcement does not provide independent validation or a broader account of charging performance under different mine conditions. Fortescue’s 6 MW charging announcement.

The broader transition Fortescue describes involves more than buying trucks: battery-electric power systems, charging infrastructure, renewable power and operations technology all form part of its plan. The 2028–2030 delivery schedule makes that infrastructure build-out material to the timetable, not an optional add-on.

Does electric mean autonomous?

No. Battery-electric propulsion describes how a truck is powered; autonomous haulage describes how it is operated. They are separate capabilities, even when a project combines them. Huawei’s Yimin announcement covers an autonomous electric fleet. Fortescue and Liebherr have described work on both battery-electric haulage and the T 264 autonomous haulage system, but those capabilities and their timelines should not be treated as interchangeable. The 2024 partnership announcement said onsite validation of the battery-electric T 264 was due to begin at the end of 2025; it is an earlier schedule statement, not confirmation of later validation results. What do the Yimin productivity figures show?

Huawei reported that Yimin’s autonomous operations reached 120% of human-driver productivity by 2024, after early testing at 87%. These are Huawei-reported, site-specific figures. They are not independent comparative results, do not establish performance at other mines and should not be applied to Fortescue’s planned fleet. Huawei’s Yimin account.

What could change mine operations—and what remains uncertain?

The plan points to a large-scale shift in mine haulage: battery-electric trucks supported by high-capacity charging, power supply and operations systems. But a procurement target is not itself proof of lower operating costs, higher productivity or emissions reductions in practice. The cited company announcements establish what the companies have announced, not an independent comparison of lifecycle costs, productivity or environmental performance.

For readers tracking progress, the useful checkpoints are whether planned deliveries begin on schedule, how many trucks each supplier ultimately provides, how charging infrastructure is deployed, and what independently comparable operational data becomes available. Until those are established, Fortescue’s 300–400-truck fleet is best described as a major planned deployment, while Yimin is a separate 100-truck autonomous electric operation reported as underway in 2025.
