The dog’s eventual fate remains qualified in the available public record. Mission Local reported that the animal’s condition was initially unclear, while a December 16 report from the San Francisco County Transportation Authority referred to the vehicle as having “reportedly struck and killed” a dog. No publicly available animal-control case resolution cited in those reports independently confirms the death.
What happened in the Waymo dog collision?
The collision occurred near the intersection of Scott and Eddy streets in the Western Addition on the night of November 30. The passenger was traveling with family members in a Waymo vehicle when, according to the passenger’s account, the vehicle hit or rolled over a dog in the roadway.

The passenger later described hearing yelping and said the children in the car were crying or screaming. In another part of the account, the passenger said the family did not see the dog before impact. Those details come from a rider’s firsthand account reported by Mission Local and shared on Reddit; they are not an independently released recording or an official reconstruction.
The passenger estimated that the dog weighed approximately 20 to 30 pounds. The public accounts differ in how precisely the rider described the impact and what was visible immediately beforehand. Those differences matter because neither Waymo’s public statement nor the available city records provide the vehicle’s speed, braking distance, perception data, video, or telemetry.
What did Waymo confirm?
On December 1, Waymo confirmed that one of its vehicles made contact with “a small, unleashed dog in the roadway.” The company said it was reviewing the situation and working to improve road safety.
That statement confirms contact with the animal, but it does not establish several facts that remain unresolved publicly:

- Whether the vehicle braked, swerved, or took another evasive action;
- Whether the dog entered the vehicle’s path suddenly;
- What the vehicle’s cameras and sensors recorded; or
- Whether the dog survived the collision.
Waymo’s description that the dog was unleashed and in the roadway should not be expanded into a claim that the company blamed the owner. The quoted statement describes the scene; it does not assign legal or moral responsibility.
What is known about the dog’s condition?
Initially, the answer was unclear. San Francisco Animal Care and Control said it received a 311 complaint at approximately 8:25 p.m. concerning a Waymo at the intersection, but the agency had no follow-up information after contacting the reporting party, according to Mission Local.
A later San Francisco County Transportation Authority executive report described the incident as a Waymo vehicle that “reportedly struck and killed” a dog. The qualifier is important: the report records the outcome as reported, rather than presenting a documented animal-control determination or publicly released case file.

What happened to the family after the impact?
The passenger said the family tried to reach Waymo customer support and police after the collision. In a later Reddit update, the passenger said a Waymo manager contacted the family, told them a collision report had been filed, and indicated that company personnel would try to locate the dog’s owner and offer veterinary or similar assistance.
Those follow-up details came from the passenger and were not included in the public Waymo statement quoted by Mission Local. They should consequently be treated as the rider’s account of the company’s response, not as independently documented proof of what assistance was ultimately provided.
Why the incident raises an accountability question
The collision is significant not only because an autonomous vehicle hit an animal, but because the passengers experienced a distressing event without a conventional driver physically present to explain what the vehicle detected, what it did, or what would happen next.

In a robotaxi, those functions are divided among the passenger, remote support staff, emergency services, the operator’s incident-review team, and public agencies. That can leave riders with immediate practical and emotional questions while the company investigates the vehicle data.

The public record currently includes a passenger account, Waymo’s confirmation, a 311 report, and a later transportation-agency reference. It does not include a complete public account of the vehicle’s sensor data, autonomous-driving decisions, or animal-control disposition. That information gap is central to evaluating the event responsibly.
How this fits into San Francisco’s robotaxi debate
The dog collision followed the widely publicized death of KitKat, a neighborhood cat killed by a Waymo vehicle in San Francisco’s Mission District. The two incidents prompted renewed criticism from some local officials and community members about autonomous-vehicle oversight and expansion.
Mission Local reported that Supervisor Jackie Fielder called for allowing voters to decide on autonomous-vehicle operations on a county-by-county basis. The proposal reflects a broader political dispute over who should control the deployment of driverless vehicles and how communities should evaluate risks involving pedestrians, animals, emergency situations, and property.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe December 16 San Francisco County Transportation Authority report also placed the dog collision in a period of industry growth. Waymo had recently received California DMV approval to expand driverless robotaxi operations across much of the Bay Area. Zoox had begun limited free public robotaxi service, and San Francisco was considering changes to a ride-hail pilot.

- 【Perfect Size】– 1/2” x 6 ft perfect length for Outside walking, jogging, hiking or training. Suit for Large and Medium Dogs
That timing provides context, but it does not show that any expansion approval was caused by, or directly connected to, the dog collision. Nor does one animal collision establish whether autonomous vehicles are generally safer or less safe than human drivers. A meaningful safety comparison would require broader, comparable data across similar road conditions, vehicle miles, animal encounters, and reporting standards.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse this with the Waymo school-bus investigation
On December 3, 2025, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a separate preliminary evaluation concerning Waymo vehicles’ behavior around stopped school buses. The investigation followed a different reported incident involving a school bus.
That NHTSA matter and the San Francisco dog collision can be mentioned together only as separate examples of increased scrutiny of Waymo’s driverless operations. The school-bus investigation was not an investigation into this dog collision, and the two events should not be presented as one case.
What remains unanswered?
Several questions would need additional records before the public could fully assess the collision:
- What did the vehicle detect? Waymo’s perception logs could show when the dog entered the system’s recognized path and how confidently it was classified.
- What did the vehicle do? Telemetry could establish speed, braking, steering inputs, stopping distance, and whether a safety operator or remote support team became involved.
- What happened immediately afterward? Video, police records, 311 follow-up, or animal-control records could clarify whether the dog was moved, treated, recovered, or found dead.
- Was the dog’s owner identified? The passenger said Waymo intended to look for the owner, but the public record supplied here does not document the result.
- What assistance was provided? The passenger described a possible offer of veterinary or similar help, but the final outcome is not independently documented in the cited public statement.
Bottom line
A Waymo robotaxi made contact with a small, unleashed dog in the roadway near Scott and Eddy streets on November 30, 2025. A passenger said the children in the vehicle cried after hearing the dog yelp, and Waymo confirmed the collision. The animal’s death was later reported by the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, but the publicly available evidence cited here still warrants the qualifier “reportedly.”
The incident demonstrates the human impact of a collision and the importance of transparent reporting by autonomous-vehicle operators. It does not, by itself, prove that the Waymo vehicle could have avoided the dog, establish fault, or support a general safety comparison between robotaxis and human-driven cars.
