The right diagnostic path depends on the Malibu’s model year, engine, calibration, and scan-tool data. Start by recording those details and retrieving all codes and freeze-frame information before replacing parts.
What P2097 means on a Chevy Malibu
P2097 identifies a problem reported by the post-catalyst fuel-trim monitor for Bank 1. The standardized label says the system is too rich, but that description is a starting point—not a diagnosis of the cause. GM’s 2019 OBD monitor document also describes P2097 as a rich post-catalyst fuel-trim monitor fault for that calibration: GM 2019 OBD monitor document.
Terminology can differ in a vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure. For example, GM bulletin PIP5215A describes P2097 on the 2013 Malibu 2.5L LCV as “Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System High Limit,” and says the post-oxygen sensor is sensing an exhaust stream on the lean side, reaching the limit of how much enrichment it can control. That wording applies to the bulletin’s stated configuration; it should not be treated as a universal definition. When labels appear inconsistent, use service information for the exact year and engine rather than inferring a failed part from the generic code name.
Identify the Malibu configuration before choosing a repair
GM’s published guidance illustrates why the model year and engine matter. The available bulletins cover specific configurations, not every Malibu that can set P2097:

These are dated, configuration-specific documents. Confirm that the latest applicable GM service procedure has not superseded them before treating a bulletin as repair authority. Do not assume that a bulletin for one engine or year applies to another.
How to diagnose P2097 before replacing parts
- Record the vehicle details. Note the model year, engine, and market. Retrieve all stored and pending codes, not just P2097. A code reader or scan tool with freeze-frame support can help capture the conditions when the fault set; it does not identify the cause by itself. GM’s OBD monitor document describes the monitor, while the Malibu-specific procedures below show why vehicle details matter.
- Save freeze-frame or failure records. Record short- and long-term fuel trims at the time P2097 set when that data is available. The 2013 2.5L LCV bulletin uses those values to choose which checks to make.
- Match the service procedure to the exact configuration. Check for applicable GM bulletins and service information. For some 2016–2017 1.5L LFV cases, the ECM programming check comes first; the 2013 2.5L LCV bulletin instead uses fuel-trim readings to guide additional tests.
- Test the suspected system before authorizing a repair. Intake or exhaust leak checks, injector-flow testing, electrical-circuit diagnosis, and ECM programming require the appropriate procedure and equipment. Use a qualified technician for those tests rather than replacing an oxygen sensor or catalytic converter based only on the code.
- Verify the repair using the prescribed procedure. Clear codes and confirm the repair through the vehicle’s applicable diagnostic or drive-cycle procedure after the cause is addressed. The cited bulletins do not establish one universal verification cycle for every Malibu configuration.
2013 Malibu 2.5L LCV: use fuel trims to direct checks
GM bulletin PIP5215A, published August 21, 2017, addresses intermittent P2097 on 2013 Malibu vehicles with the 2.5L LCV engine. It recommends reviewing short- and long-term fuel trims in the freeze-frame or failure records from when the code set. The bulletin’s branches are specific to this configuration:

If the recorded trims were adding more than 13% fuel
For positive fuel trims above 13%, the bulletin lists possible intake-system leaks, including hoses, lines, the purge solenoid, or loose intake bolts. It also identifies a non-OEM or poor-quality air filter and low or restricted injector flow as possibilities. It suggests checking injector flow; if flow is low, the bulletin describes using injector cleaner and retesting to see whether flow improves and is even from cylinder to cylinder.
If the recorded trims were between -13% and +13%
For trims within that range, the bulletin directs technicians to check the post-oxygen-sensor heater and circuit and inspect for exhaust-system leaks. Its exhaust-leak check uses an EVAP tester to pressurize the exhaust and soapy solution at exhaust joints to reveal leaks. These are diagnostic tests, not grounds to replace the sensor or exhaust components without confirming a fault.

2016–2017 Malibu 1.5L LFV: check calibration guidance
GM bulletin 19-NA-017, dated April 2019, applies to North America and N.A. export regions and covers 2016–2017 Malibu vehicles with the 1.5L LFV engine. GM says some P2097 cases may be caused by an ECM programming issue and instructs technicians to check for the latest ECM programming. If the ECM is already current, the bulletin directs technicians to normal service-information diagnosis. It lists no parts for its correction. See GM bulletin 19-NA-017.
The earlier PIP5535B bulletin addresses P2097 after ECM programming on the same model-year and engine range. It directs diagnosis using service information, including investigation for exhaust leaks. If that does not isolate the cause, it discusses checking whether the engine oil is overfilled and reviewing repair history. Its sensor replacement and reset sequence is tied to the bulletin’s particular calibration and repair-history context; it should not be applied as general DIY advice. See GM bulletin PIP5535B.

Symptoms and urgency
The reviewed GM bulletins associate the code with the malfunction indicator or service-engine lamp. A generic secondary reference lists possible reduced fuel efficiency, reduced performance, and related codes, but GM’s Malibu-specific bulletins do not establish that every Malibu with P2097 will have those symptoms. The available guidance also does not provide a population-level failure rate or the probability that any one cause is responsible.
If the check-engine light is on, have the code and related data diagnosed rather than assuming a particular part has failed. Seek prompt professional diagnosis if the vehicle is running poorly or other warning signs appear; the code alone does not establish how severe a particular vehicle’s condition is.
