General Motors announced it on January 10, 2005, as the 2006 Z06’s new 500-horsepower engine. Its 427 displacement, naturally aspirated high-rpm character, lightweight valvetrain parts and dry-sump lubrication made it one of Chevrolet’s most distinctive production small-blocks.
What is a Chevy LS7 engine?
The LS7 is a modern overhead-valve Chevrolet small-block with 427 cubic inches (7.0 liters) of displacement. It is not the earlier Chevrolet LS-7 big-block that used the same name. GM’s launch material presented the modern engine as a small-block, and GM Performance Parts later cataloged its crate version as an LS-Series Small-Block V-8.

The engine’s identity comes from a very large bore, a nearly square stroke, naturally aspirated airflow and a willingness to operate at engine speeds unusual for a large-displacement pushrod V-8. Its best-known production application was the C6 Corvette Z06.
When did the LS7 debut?
GM announced the LS7 on January 10, 2005, for the 2006 Corvette Z06. The announcement described a 500-horsepower small-block and linked its 7.0-liter/427-cubic-inch displacement to Chevrolet’s celebrated 427 heritage while emphasizing that the new engine used modern overhead-valve architecture.
#1 Best Overall
GM Heritage identifies the 2007 Corvette Z06 as carrying a 427-cubic-inch LS7 small-block and connects the engine’s basis to Corvette endurance-racing success. That page lists 505 horsepower at 5,500 rpm for the vehicle specification. It is a vehicle-page rating and should not be merged with the separate crate-engine rating below.
What cars came with the LS7?
C6 Corvette Z06
The documented production application is the C6-generation Chevrolet Corvette Z06, beginning with the 2006 model announced by GM. GM Heritage specifically documents the 2007 Corvette Z06 with the 427-cubic-inch LS7. The available evidence does not establish a complete worldwide application chronology or every market-specific variant, so lists that go beyond the documented Z06 application should be treated cautiously.

How much horsepower does an LS7 make?
There are two manufacturer ratings commonly encountered, and their contexts differ:
| Source context | Displacement | Power rating | Torque rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| GM launch announcement for the 2006 Corvette Z06 (2005) | 7.0 L / 427 cu in | 500 hp; the announcement does not use the crate catalog’s 6,300-rpm rating | Not stated in the cited announcement |
| GM Heritage 2007 Corvette Z06 specification | 427 cu in | 505 hp at 5,500 rpm | Not stated on the cited page |
| GM Performance Parts LS7 7.0L crate package (2011 catalog) | 7.0 L / 427 cu in | 505 hp at 6,300 rpm | 470 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm |
The 500-hp launch figure and the 505-hp figures are not contradictory when their source and rating conditions are preserved. They describe different published contexts rather than a single universal number.

LS7 specifications and engineering
The following figures describe the LS7 crate package documented in GM Performance Parts’ 2011 catalog. They are useful for identifying the engine’s mechanical character, but they are not independent dyno-test results.
| Specification | Documented value |
|---|---|
| Displacement | 427 cu in (7.0 L) |
| Bore × stroke | 4.125 × 4.000 in |
| Compression ratio | 11.0:1 |
| Rated output | 505 hp at 6,300 rpm |
| Peak torque | 470 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm |
| Maximum engine speed | 7,000 rpm |
| Intake valves | 2.20-in titanium |
| Exhaust valves | 1.61-in sodium-filled |
| Block and main caps | Cast-aluminum block with six-bolt steel main caps |
| Crankshaft | Forged steel |
| Connecting rods | Forged titanium |
| Cylinder heads | CNC-ported |
Why the LS7 is a high-revving 427
A 4.125-inch bore leaves room for large valves, while the 4.000-inch stroke avoids the long-stroke proportions that typically increase piston speed at a given rpm. Combined with CNC-ported heads, 2.20-inch titanium intake valves and a 7,000-rpm maximum listed for the crate package, the dimensions support the LS7’s naturally aspirated, airflow-focused personality.

Why does the LS7 use a dry-sump oiling system?
The cataloged LS7 crate package includes a production-style dry-sump oil pan. In a dry-sump system, oil is stored outside the engine’s pan and circulated through external plumbing, helping maintain oil control during sustained high-load cornering and other demanding use.
Best Value
- Thin stamped aluminum emblem in black red and silver
- Sold individually; Measures 5-7/8" long by 3/4" tall
- Adhesive backed for easy peel-and-stick installation
- Works best on clean, unwaxed surfaces
- Can be formed to fit contours and curves
That benefit creates installation work. GM’s 2011 catalog says the installer must provide the external oil supply and oil lines. The catalog describes that particular package as intended for pre-1976 street vehicles or off-road vehicles and not for marine applications. Those notes apply to the cataloged package, not automatically to every LS7 configuration or vehicle conversion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is included in an LS7 crate-engine installation?
An LS7 crate engine is not a complete, drop-in vehicle system. Chevrolet’s LS7 EFI installation specifications state that an engine-control system and wiring harness are required and should be sourced through a Chevrolet Performance dealer, with currently available packages checked directly.
Core systems to plan
- Dry-sump plumbing: provide the external oil supply, lines and compatible fittings for the specific engine package.
- Engine controls: match the ECU, calibration and harness to the LS7 and the intended vehicle.
- Fuel delivery: size the fuel system for the engine’s requirements and the chosen control package.
- Cooling: allow for application-specific radiator, fans, hoses and related capacity.
- Electrical integration: plan power, grounds, sensors, charging and vehicle-interface wiring.
- Exhaust: headers, catalysts, mufflers and clearance depend on the chassis and legal requirements.
- Fabrication: mounts, oil-tank placement, plumbing and exhaust routing may require custom work.
Chevrolet’s guide notes that conversions can require additional cooling, fuel, electrical and exhaust components, as well as fabrication. For service questions beyond the guide, it points readers to Chevrolet Performance dealers using 2013 Corvette Z06 LS7 service information.
LS7 production engine versus crate package
| Question | Production Corvette Z06 context | Documented 2011 crate context |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use | C6 Corvette Z06 | Engine-swap and performance applications covered by the catalog |
| Published power figure | 500 hp in the 2005 launch announcement; GM Heritage lists 505 hp at 5,500 rpm for the 2007 Z06 page | 505 hp at 6,300 rpm |
| Oiling | Dry-sump production engine design | Production-style dry-sump pan; external oil supply and lines are installer responsibilities |
| Controls and vehicle systems | Integrated into the Corvette’s factory systems | Controller, harness and supporting fuel, cooling, electrical and exhaust systems must be planned |
| Availability evidence | Documented historical vehicle application | Cataloged by GM Performance Parts in 2011; that catalog does not prove current inventory |
Is the LS7 a 427 small-block?
Yes. The modern LS7 is a 427-cubic-inch (7.0-liter) Chevrolet small-block. “427” describes displacement, not big-block architecture. Chevrolet’s historical use of LS-7 as a big-block name is a separate engine identity, which is why the modern LS7 should be described as an LS-series small-block to avoid confusion.
What made the LS7 iconic?
- Big displacement in a small-block package: 427 cubic inches from an overhead-valve LS architecture.
- High-rpm breathing: large-bore geometry, CNC-ported heads and large titanium intake valves.
- Lightweight reciprocating hardware: forged-titanium connecting rods paired with a forged-steel crankshaft.
- Track-oriented oil control: a dry-sump system suited to sustained performance driving.
- Corvette provenance: developed for the C6 Z06 and associated by GM Heritage with Corvette endurance-racing success.
- Afterlife as a crate engine: GM Performance Parts continued to document a 7.0L LS7 package after the production-car launch.
What the documented history does not establish
Published material cited here does not establish exact annual LS7 production totals, a complete year-by-year or international application list, or current marketplace availability for the 2011 crate package. It also does not provide independent comparative dyno testing. Those details should not be inferred from the engine’s specification sheets or historical catalog listing.
