The 2017 and 2020 Colorado manuals show why: maintenance can differ between normal and severe use, and 4WD equipment has service needs that do not apply to every configuration. Chevrolet’s general maintenance guidance offers useful inspection prompts, but it is not a substitute for the schedule that matches your truck.
Identify the truck before deciding what is due
“Colorado ZR2” alone is not enough information to set maintenance intervals. Before you plan service, record the model year, engine, transmission, 2WD or 4WD configuration, odometer reading and how the truck has been used. Then find the owner’s manual for that specific vehicle and check its Service and Maintenance section. Chevrolet’s manuals and guides page lets owners select a manual by year, make and model; Chevrolet says its owner’s manual contains the vehicle’s recommended routine maintenance information.

Use the truck’s maintenance reminders alongside the manual and service records. Chevrolet says the myChevrolet app can show maintenance reminders and allow service scheduling. If the truck has a warning, a symptom or an uncertain service history, have a qualified technician assess it rather than treating an odometer number as a diagnosis.
Build a usable service history
Gather invoices, work orders, inspection reports and any records from previous owners. For each entry, note the date, mileage, work performed and—where the record provides it—the fluid or part used. Mark services as documented, uncertain or not documented. An undocumented service is not proof that the work was skipped, but it is a reason to verify what is due before assuming the truck is current.

Compare the records with the matching manual’s time- and mileage-based requirements. A truck that has covered relatively few miles over a long period may still have time-based maintenance due; use the manual rather than extrapolating from mileage alone. If the vehicle’s history is incomplete, ask a technician to inspect it and help establish a baseline plan appropriate to its year and configuration.
Use the right schedule for normal or severe use
The owner’s manual separates maintenance by operating conditions. Compare your truck’s actual use with the manual’s definitions of normal and severe service; do not select a schedule just because the odometer is high. The reviewed 2017 and 2020 Colorado manuals both include additional severe-use maintenance, including transmission-fluid service and, on 4WD vehicles, transfer-case fluid service. The exact interval depends on the correct year and configuration, so those examples do not establish a universal ZR2 interval.
Off-road use is a reason to be particularly careful about operating conditions and fluid history, but it does not by itself provide a service interval. Check the matching manual’s severe-use criteria and requirements. If you are not sure how your driving fits, have a technician review the use pattern and records with you.

Chevrolet’s general mileage pointers are inspection prompts
Chevrolet’s general maintenance page, accessed in 2026, gives broad vehicle-level guidance. These figures can help you decide what to ask about at an inspection, but Chevrolet does not present them as a Colorado ZR2-specific schedule:
| General guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Oil and filter service: every 7,500 miles | Chevrolet’s general guidance; use the truck’s maintenance reminders and exact owner’s manual for its schedule. |
| Tire rotation: every 7,500 miles | Chevrolet’s general recommendation; confirm the vehicle-specific requirements in the manual. |
| Belts and hoses: inspection around 70,000 miles | A general inspection prompt, not a confirmed ZR2 replacement interval. |
| Transmission fluid: inspection around 70,000 miles | Do not confuse this general inspection pointer with the fluid-service interval in the truck’s manual. |
| Shocks and struts: inspection around 60,000–75,000 miles | Use this broad range to prompt a condition check; it does not mean every truck needs replacement in that range. |
| Approaching 100,000 miles: inspect differentials and the transfer case on 4WD vehicles | General Chevrolet guidance; apply it only to the relevant equipment and confirm the manual’s service requirements. |
| Spark plugs: recommended around 100,000 miles for most vehicles | Chevrolet’s broad guidance, not a verified interval for every Colorado ZR2 engine. |
Chevrolet also notes that not every vehicle needs a timing belt. Do not assume your truck has one or schedule a belt service from a generic checklist; verify its engine-specific maintenance requirements in the correct manual.
Review fluids and drivetrain service history
For a high-mileage assessment, look beyond whether a fluid looks clean. Establish which fluid services the manual calls for, whether the work is documented and whether the truck’s operating conditions call for the severe-use schedule. Ask the shop to identify any leaks or signs of contamination and to distinguish an inspection from a fluid replacement. Fluid appearance alone does not establish that a scheduled service has been completed or that a component is healthy.

Transmission, transfer case and differentials
Check the record for transmission-fluid service and, on a 4WD truck, transfer-case fluid service. The 2017 and 2020 Colorado manuals include additional severe-use service for these components, but the intervals are not interchangeable across model years or configurations. Confirm the specification and procedure in the correct manual or with a qualified technician; do not apply an interval from another Colorado simply because it has the same badge.

Chevrolet’s general guidance calls out inspection of these components as a 4WD vehicle approaches 100,000 miles, but that is a broad prompt, not a ZR2-specific replacement instruction. Off-road history, fluid-service records and the truck’s manual are more useful for deciding what work is actually due.
Inspect wear items by condition, not by mileage alone
A high-mileage inspection should establish the condition of the truck, not turn every mileage milestone into a parts order. Ask for findings that identify the affected component, the observed condition and whether the work is required now, scheduled by the manual or simply worth monitoring.

Brakes and tires
Have brake wear and the tires’ overall condition assessed. Check the service history for tire rotations and compare future rotation timing with the vehicle’s maintenance reminders and manual. If an inspection finds uneven wear or another concern, ask what it indicates and whether further diagnosis is needed; the odometer by itself cannot determine that a brake or tire needs replacement.
Belts, hoses and suspension
Have belts and hoses checked for condition and signs of leakage or deterioration. Chevrolet’s general guidance places an inspection around 70,000 miles, but it does not establish a ZR2-specific replacement point. Similarly, the broad 60,000–75,000-mile shock-and-strut inspection range is a prompt to assess condition, not a rule that all trucks need new parts. Ask the technician to explain any recommendation using the observed wear or symptom.

Filters and airflow
The Colorado manuals specify service for both the passenger-compartment air filter and the engine air-cleaner filter. They give scheduled mileage or time requirements for the cabin filter and advise that conditions such as heavy traffic, poor air quality, dust, reduced airflow, window fogging or odors can justify more frequent cabin-filter replacement. Verify the correct replacement part for your model year rather than relying on a general fitment claim.

The manuals also call for engine air-cleaner filter service and advise inspection at each oil change, or more often as needed in dusty conditions. If the truck regularly travels on dusty roads or trails, mention that when discussing the filter’s condition and service history. The manuals’ instructions—not a universal high-mileage cutoff—should guide the interval.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect 4WD components during washing
Take care with high-pressure washing around the transfer-case and axle output seals. The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado Owner’s Manual warns: “High pressure water can overcome the seals and contaminate the transfer case fluid.” It adds that contaminated fluid can decrease transfer-case or axle life and should be replaced. This caution is relevant when washing mud or debris from the underbody, particularly after off-road use. If you suspect fluid contamination, have the affected component assessed and follow the manual’s direction rather than continuing to operate on the assumption that the fluid is fine.
A step-by-step high-mileage maintenance review
- Record the vehicle details. Write down model year, engine, transmission, 2WD or 4WD configuration, current mileage and major symptoms. These details determine which schedule and equipment apply.
- Get the matching manual. Select the vehicle by year, make and model through Chevrolet’s manuals and guides page. Locate the Service and Maintenance section and note the schedule for the truck’s configuration.
- Classify how it has been used. Compare actual driving conditions with the manual’s normal- and severe-use schedules. Include relevant dusty, off-road or other demanding use when discussing the truck with a technician.
- Organize invoices and reminders. List completed services by date and mileage, and compare them with the manual and the truck’s maintenance reminders. Keep undocumented work separate from confirmed work.
- Request a condition-based inspection. Ask the shop to check fluid history and leaks, brakes, tires, filters, belts and hoses, suspension, and—if equipped—transfer-case and differential service history. Ask for the reason behind each proposed repair.
- Resolve unknowns before choosing intervals. If records are missing, a warning is present or symptoms have appeared, have a qualified technician evaluate the truck and use its exact manual to set the next steps.
Turn the inspection into a maintenance plan
After the review, keep a simple record with the item, date, odometer reading, finding, work performed and next due point as specified by the manual or technician. Separate required scheduled service from condition-based recommendations, and retain invoices so the next owner—or the next shop—can see what was actually done. If a recommendation conflicts with the owner’s manual or is based only on a generic mileage milestone, ask the shop to explain how the truck’s model year, configuration, use and observed condition support it.
Chevrolet says diagnostic and service manuals are available through GM Service Information. For routine owner maintenance, the vehicle-specific owner’s manual and service history remain the practical starting point; seek qualified service when the history is incomplete, a component shows a problem or a procedure requires specialist diagnosis.
